With all the postings about Gladys House's arrest and concerns that her arrest was racially motivated, how this story from today's (Jan. 23) Austin American-Statesman that mentions that the Confederate flag is flying proudly over Laredo International Airport:

Nugent defends Confederate apparel, denies anti-immigrant talk

The conservative rocker says Rick Perry called with support

Conservative rock 'n' roll star Ted Nugent said Monday that he did nothing untoward by wearing a Confederate flag shirt at an Austin concert capping Gov. Rick Perry's inauguration last week — and that Perry saluted his stance.

"My friend, my servant, my blood brother, my fellow American warrior called me two days ago and told me he's proud that flag is flying over Laredo," Nugent said of Perry.

The Republican leader's point, Nugent said, "was that the Confederate flag currently as we speak is proudly flying over the Laredo (International) Airport; if no one has torn it down yet, some citizens must stand with it. It does not represent slavery or racism. It represents a spirit of defiance and rebellion."

Perry spokesman Robert Black said later that although Perry wouldn't personally wear such a shirt, he told the performer "he has a right to wear whatever he wants, just like the Laredo airport has a right to fly whatever flag it wants. Remember . . . if you choose to believe in freedom of expression, you can't pick and choose only the expression you agree with."

Nugent, speaking by telephone from a deer blind near Waco, where he lives, insisted Monday that he said nothing unflattering about illegal immigrants at last Tuesday's concert, contrary to published reports.

Last week, The Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News, citing unidentified concert attendees, reported that Nugent shouted unflattering remarks about undocumented immigrants, including kicking them out of the country. The account was cited by The Associated Press, whose article was printed by the American-Statesman.

Nugent said Monday that he did call one of his hits, "Wango Tango," the official immigration theme song.

In Web postings after the concert, Nugent said a tape of the concert, unavailable from Nugent late Monday, disproves the news accounts.

"I had to hire undocumented immigrants (illegals) just to help remove my halo that night," one posting by Nugent says. "I was so PG-13, I offended myself."

News reports also reported that an AK-47 was on stage; Nugent said semiautomatic machine guns, but no AK-47s, were there. Henry Krausse, deputy state editor for the Express-News, said the newspapers have asked Nugent for his tape of the concert.

"If it backs up his account, we'll report it," Krausse said.

Nugent on Monday called an Austin lawyer critical of celebrations of the Confederate flag an idiot who "gives all indications he is in fact a racist."

The critic, Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, declined to comment on Nugent's direct characterization but said the rocker should study history. Just "because there is a Confederate flag flying over the airport in Laredo doesn't change the fact that the flag stands for the enslavement of human beings and is the symbol of hate and terrorist groups," Bledsoe said.

Nugent said earlier that he dedicated his performance to James Brown, the soul singer who died late last year, "and the legacy he has taught all musicians, a legacy of heart, soul, spirit and passion."

Gotta say I can't see the Confederate flag in the photo, but it's probably there somewhere.

Should that flag be displayed at the airport? Thoughts, anyone?

You'll notice that the reporter's e-mail address and phone number are listed in the story that is displayed in the prior entry.

After reading the story about the Confederate flag at Laredo's airport, I wondered whether Houston displayed the flag at the city's biggest airport, so I looked.

Don't see the Confederate flag in the display of flags at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston:

What really grasps my frustration behind this situation is the fact that the city will take tax-payers hard earned money to investigate such a clear case - it's obvious what's happened here and the officers involved should not be investigated and was the taxpayers money - they should be permanently removed from the law enforcement field and seek jobs in the janitorial service pusing mops since they seem to like to push someone / something around - NOW THIS IS TOTALLY RIDUCULOUS! The only thing that is "obvious" Jan D, if that you are wrong.

Everyone deserves their day in court. Or, is there any other part of the US Consititution that you would like to pick and choose from? And can others pick and choose to your detriment?

The Confederate Flag is part of Texas history folks. As are five others so it DOES have a place at the Laredo airport if they decide to go with the "6 flags over Texas" theme. If you want to start ripping or changing TX history you will not win the fight. Texans like their stories.
