WAS IT AN OLD FASHIONED SMEAR CAMPAIGN BY THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT?

MILES' WIFE: IT WAS RETALIATION AGAINST OUR FAMILY BY HPD!

The minute I heard what HPD had to announce at their 5pm press conference at 1200 Travis Tuesday - it raised a red flag to me as a reporter. The press conference addressed the recent disappearance of Houston minister Chester Miles. Miles recently disappeared and was later found under the name John Doe at a local hospital after being assaulted by two men who have now been arrested. But back to that 5pm press conference. HPD announced to the media they now had the details in the investigation into Mr. Miles' case and 2 suspects charged. Now keep in mind this comes after a week of intense public criticism of HPD. Family members of Miles claimed the department mishandled the case and didn't aggressively investigate the disappearance. Not impounding the Ministers car from the constable that was found with one of the suspects. Now, fast forward a week and HPD releases the details of Miles disappearance. The department released a long statement but this is the paragraph that sticks out to Miles' wife and cut her and his family like a knife:

An investigation has determined Mr. Miles sustained his injuries at a motel at 6060 Hooton Drive. He had gone to the location to meet a female. During that meeting, Guillory and Pickett showed up and beat and stabbed Miles. The two male suspects then fled in Miles' red Dodge Neon.

Any reporter worth his or her salt would want to know who the 'female' was Miles allegedly met at the motel on Hooton Drive. And those suspicious of HPD's motives for revealing these details of the investigation knew the 'female' line at the motel would lead to other questions by journalists. According to some reporters at the press conference HPD investigators were more than willing to reveal Miles was with an alleged prostitute he frequented in the past. Miles' wife Latonya says it's clear retaliation by HPD for her criticism of the department. She says those are details police did not have to release even though she doesn't believe them. As a reporter I can attest to that. HPD has had several press conferences in the past where they refuse to release certain information. Another reporter reminded me when a HPD cop was caught in a compromising position not too long ago with someone other than his wife - they refused to release details saying "we're not going to get into that." But according to Miles wife they certainly did get into it. Releasing every little salacious detail they could according to those at the press conference. If this was an intentional smear campaign against the Miles family, shame on HPD...Shame on them for attacking a man who is hospitalized after being assaulted. If there were some extra curricular activities by the minister it should be left between Mr. Miles, his wife and ultimately his God!

Note: The Insite hears a local councilman plans to call HPD on the carpet at city council Wednesday for what the elected official also sees as a possible smear campaign!

Isiah, I hope you will stay on this case. Something about all of this just doesn't add up. I truly hope that the allegations against Mr. Miles aren't true, and my heart goes out to his wife for all that she and her daughter have had to endure over the past week. But, no matter what he was doing, the fact remains that he was brutally assaulted and left for dead. HPD really dropped the ball in this case, because now we find out that one of the "young men" who was originally found smoking pot in Miles' car was responsible for the assault. WHY didn't HPD do more to find out where Mr. Miles was at the time that they found his car?

I have said it before, I don't like the cries of racism that often arise here on the Insite, but all of this just doesn't smell right to me. I hope that someone can get to the bottom of all of this. Someone at HPD should be held accountable for not following up on where Mr. Miles was and what happened to him, once they found his car. This is just complete incompetence!

If something doesn't happen soon with HPD to improve public confidence in their law enforcement abilities, I think things are going to get ugly here in Houston. There aren't enough cops to protect a city of this size, and now there are too many stories coming out about coverups and incompetence. Scary times! I will keep praying for all of the good men and women in law enforcement here in Houston, but our city leaders need to get on the ball NOW to improve the police force - numbers, training, etc.

HEY, DUMBASSES! The car was found by CONSTABLES, NOT HPD! THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SCREWD UP AND THEN HANDED THE MESS TO HPD TO FIX! Get it right. HPD was given the case to be handled after Pct 58 or whatever the hell pct constables it was screwed it up. HPD just released the circumnstances of the events to the media. You all know damn well that "preacher" was looking for a piece of ass and got jacked by a crew that preyed on men looking for a good time. I can not believe you all think he was just out for a sunday drive when he saw and tried to save these soiled doves. Good LORD!

Harold Hurtt was known for this same kind of shit in Arizona. It's where Mayor White needs to send his ass packing. To the last moron. It doesn't matter if the constables found the car or not hpd should've impounded idiot. You're probably one of the cops. Hurtt needs to go. If Mayor White doesn't see it he's an idiot too.

Gee, if they dont contact HPD because they want to play police all by themselves, how in hell is HPD gonna impound the car? Hey, did you hear that the Dallas police department pulled over a suspicious vehicle? Unfourtunately, HPD did not impound it, so it is HPD's fault that Dallas let it go. Ummm....Gee, that makes as much sense.

I feel really sorry for Pastor Miles' family. If our police department stoops this low to retaliate against a tax paying citizen then we all should run and hide. Isiah please keep us updated on this under handed tactic used by "our" so called police department.

I am confused. How is it Houston Police responsibility to impound a car that another agency pulled over and investigated? Arent they the police too? Why didnt they just impound it themselves? Why is it not the sherrifs problem, or Austin police departments problem, or Metro police problem? I dont understand how Chief Hurt does this all the time in Arizona when they dont let every swingging dick have his own police department in Arizona like they do in Texas. Can someone explain this to me? Im with the last guy. Why is it HPD's fault when the constables did not let HPD know about it? If the constables cant do police stuff, why are they police?

Since when is the truth an "under-handed", "evil tactic", of "retaliation"? Grow up, people.

If the part time minister was attacked while visiting a prostitute then how is it a smear campaign? If it is the truth then i he smeared himself! Does it matter what he was doing when he was attacked? YES IT DOES! If he was indeed with the prostitute and the others then it changes the story. It's still sad for the wife and daughter- but in a different way.

The first news story stated that PCT 5 called HPD and asked if HPD wanted the car impounded. HPD said no and release the occupants. Hard to blame PCT 5

Its also a low blow to say all this while the victim remains in the hospital and cannot speak for himself.

HPD obviously wanted to divert attention from their screw up.

Everyone is assuming HPD screwed up......based on limited information. They found Miles stabbed in the hotel room, but couldn't ID him, so he went to the hospital as a John Doe. His wife files a missing persons report, HPD issues a "be on the lookout" for his vehicle, which Pct. 5 finds. They arrest the driver (who ultimately was one of the two responsible for the attack on Miles) and release the passenger (who ultimately had nothing to do with it). The vehicle is processed for evidence (and nothing of usable value is found) and released back to the wife. HPD questions the arrested person, develops new leads while Mr. Miles is finally identified by hospital staff. The names of the others involved in the attack are now known and arrest warrants pending. So, all you smart people out there, how did HPD drop the ball on this one? And, do they not have the right to release ALL the FACTS to exonerate themselves since they were slammed all week by Miles' wife and family (and others in the black community) for not doing their job (which they did)? If the truth is he was set up by a prostitute, then how is it retaliation? If you want to distort the truth to fit your preconceived notions because you hate the police, fine, but I call bullshit. You are all full of it! And, as always, so are you Isiah.....

  12. Well, I find the contrary, According to the Houston Chronicle, a Missing person alert was sent to area hospitals on Dec 3rd according to phone records the pastor contacted the whores to make the arrangements. It looks like HPD were doing their job. If blame was going to be place I think it should be with the Constables and Harris County who didn't impound the car.

The "Pastor" well if his wife forgives him than so be it, I would advise you to get tested down at the montrose clinic or a clinic near you. The bottom line is, the man went to the hotel for some pleasure inducing activity with $500.00 in his pockets only to be Jacked by two brothas..
Very Very hard to explain that one. Don't worry folks, the Whores name will surface. JOLO guarantees it.

the point that's being made is HPD felt as if they were criticized by the pastor's family. it doesn't matter if the department did everything right. it doesn't matter who handled or imponded the missing pastor's car. the point is hurtt and his folk felt like they were being blamed so they came out swinging.

As one anonymous writer has already said the department made all the information they had available because they wanted to exonerate themselves. So to clear hpd's name they dropped Miles in the fire. They wanted the public to know this Pastor was no choir boy. They wanted to paint him as a sleezy whore lover. They were very sucessful in that attempt because that's what all the dumb ass new media in H-town is now focused on. Great job hpd for attacking a man who's hospitalized to save your reputation.

this is just as bad as when Chief Hurtt tried to slime his way out of the dumb ass chase policy. It's time there's new accountable leadership at Hpd. Hurtt needs to take his gold tooth as back to his homies in Pheonix.

I just think the whole thing is sad. He was a part time minister and had a job as an electrician. I guess maybe he was in the hotel room to do some preaching or electical work. Nothing else. Bottom line he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with five hundred dollars in his pocket. I guess he could not have used a credit card or debit card for what he needed.

  15. Anonymous9:44 AM

I've been a Houston police officer for 23 years. I agree this is the kind of thing the department does. Hurtt has brought a whole new mentality from Pheonix.

He has divided the department and turned it into a place of low morale. That's why I'm not suprised he and his public affairs division has attacked the minister.

I would advise any person out there never to challenge Hurtt. He is the worst chief our department has ever seen. Brown and Bradford were even better.

I also see this as a sad situation but keep in mind you're dealing with a defensive and paranoid administration with White and Hurtt.

Lest we forget that the pastor was just paroled in 2003 for Ag Robbery/Ag Kidnapping.

The pastor is a turd. He didnt need any help from HPD to be smeared, he was doing a good job all by himself.

As for you Isiah, if HPD said nothing, you'd be crying that they were witholding infomrataion.

Reporters, especicialy two-bit reporters like you, are a joke.

Why is it so hard for everyone to believe that this so called “Pastor” could be with a prostitute? Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.” The family and media cannot change the facts of the case and I believe that HPD should not be accused of anything for releasing facts. It is not slander or smear campaigns if it is the truth.

Also, the family of the “Pastor” and the media are to blame for all the press in this case. Most missing persons do not receive press conferences and some never receive media attention. I believe HPD was forced into releasing the details of this case because nobody would just let it go and tried to divert blame from the “Pastor” to HPD. The family probably knew already. The Chronicle reported that this “Pastor” had a lengthy criminal history. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Truth is generally the best vindication against slander.”

This is an emotional issue, with enough blame to spread around!

(starting with the minister, who if accurate, put himself in that compromising situation, and ending with the cops who dropped the ball on part of the investigation)

But, everyone let's take a deep breathe. Do we really have to hate, just because we disagree?

This case would never have gotten the attention that it has if this guy had not been a preacher man. Wake up world - not all preachers are saints and some of them do some bad things (all religions). Hundreds of people go missing all the time without media attention or press conferences. I agree that the family and press forced HPD's hand on this. "The truth shall set you free."

Folks, the preacher in question was a part time preacher. His church is a shotgun shack and looks to have enough space for 40 people tops. His money comes from being an electrician. Now, isn't it a little easier to accept that a contract electrician was stabbed while attempting to boink a prostitute?

Also, Insite is no two bit reporter- but insulting him only makes him stronger. Keep it up and he will rule all of Houston.

Was anyone else really shocked by the revelation? An ex-con shacking up with a prostitute. Too many were blinded by the fact that he is now a church person and is married. Agree - don't do stupid sh*t if you do not want to get caught. Chester has only to look in the mirror to find blame.

    Bullshit...

If this had been Ed Young or Joel Osteen, you'd be BITCHING if HPD hadnt announced this important little detail.

Get a clue. Mr. Preacher Man regardless of race, would NOT have been assaulted if he hadnt been tagging someone paid by the hour hooker. If he hadnt been there and hadnt been assaulted, his family wouldnt have had to wonder what had become of him.... nor would he have been called out for his "sins"....

the bullshit is HPD's version of what happened. Where did they get that information about the prostitute from. They got it from the damn lying suspects. The preacher denied it happened so they released the arrested suspect's version of what happened. You can't trust that scumbag department.

Yup, deffinantly true. It's all a huge conspiracy by the "man". Hey, did ya know that U.S. astronaughts never actually landed on the moon? it was all videotaped on a soundstage in L.A. Also, the holocaust never realy happened and millions and millions of jews were not incinerated. I despair the species with comments like the last one.

"Where did they get that information about the prostitute from. They got it from the damn lying suspects. The preacher denied it happened so they released the arrested suspect's version of what happened."

So what you are saying is that the suspect's are lying? So let's drop the charges, since they did admit to robbing him. They are LIARS and must have been lying about robbing him! Let's drop the charges since they stated how it went down. LIARSLIARSLIARS!! Why would they make that $hit up about him meeting a prostitute knowing that the story would get them charged with Aggravated Robbery?

SUSP#1 "Hey BoBo, I don't feel like being home for Christmas! Let's make up a story that puts us in jail for the holidays and possibly for life."

SUSP#2 "Hey DayDay, thats sounds like a great plan. Let's make up a story and say that fine upstanding paroled preacher was hooking up with a hooker!"

Of course this preacher is going to deny it to his wife. He got caught dirty and is trying to buy time to come up with a good story. I don't know why everyone on this board gets all googoo eyed when someone says they are a preacher or ministers wife. All you have to do is look at that LIAR Yolanda Perry and how she was proven to be a liar before the grand jury!

I wonder what the reaction would be if the suspects arrested claimed to be preachers or ministers. FREE THEM NOW would be the cries from this board. All it takes is about 2 minutes and any yahoo can become an ordained minister over the Internet. This ex-Felon "preacher"(and what exact credentials do you need to have to call yourself a preacher?) got caught dirty!!!!Plain and simple

Chester Miles may be a part-time electrician, but he should be a full-time plumber or ditch-digger with all the pipe he's been laying lately. What a crock....and to blame HPD. Guess all the black "victo-crats" gotsta blame somebody....which is usually "the man", "the gubment" or some other white person... Get a grip idiots...Miles has no one to blame but himself. Guess he never heard the old fable that says "if you sleep with snakes, don't cry foul when you get bit." As for his dumbass wife, believe what you want honey, but denial is not a river in Egypt. Morons.....

It's a shame that the family and activists forced HPD to lay out all the cards on the table for the public to see. I guess that is what happens when you use falsehoods to cover up a preacher's wrong doing. The "blame the man" mentality came back on them in a fair manner since HPD did not have enough information to properly detain all those involved; thanks to the family trying to cover up the truth.
