LAWRENCE OTIS GRAHAM IS AT IT AGAIN: HE WANTS TO DIVIDE THE BLACK COMMUNITY?

IS THERE A NEED TO CATALOG BLACK AMERICA'S RICHEST AND MOST SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE FAMILIES?

First, let me thank Bernadette 'Atlanta Correspondent' Brown for an excellent article she emailed to The Insite. It takes a look at author Lawrence Otis Grahams latest book. It's called "The Our Kind of People 800 Register." You may remember Graham from a cover story where he was the subject matter back in 1992. He went undercover as a busboy at a very exclusive New York club where his application was rejected for membership. Now the ivy league educated author has upset a lot of people in Atlanta. He's planning on touring the country and writing a book about America's wealthiest African American families. Critics of the book say it's an effort by Graham to separate the haves from the have nots in the Black community. And according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Graham says he is doing exactly that. The man who considers himself part of the black elite says African Americans should have a social register (i.e. New York Social Register) just like the white community has done so for over 100 years. Those against the book like June Dobbs Butts in Atlanta, a daughter of civic leader John Wesley Dobbs says, "he (Graham) is such a social climber it is pathetic." Dobbs went on to say, "he is looking for validation from the wrong places." Graham counters that argument saying, "I know it is going to upset people, but I have an important goal in mind. " He says the book is about more than finding the top African American families in America. He says he's also trying to address the negative images that seem to dominate the media and mind-set. Graham says the only black success stories we seem to want to embrace are athletes, comedians and entertainers. Which means the author will likely include Bill Cosby, Bob Johnson (BET), and Oprah Winfrey. But he's reportedly leaving off Jay Z, Michael Jordan, and Tyler Perry. Graham's so called formula requires a pedigree that some of our favorite celebrities can't quite live up to. For instance the criteria to make the list: what colleges you attended, who did you marry of influence and what's your family's social status. Some of those who were interviewed by the Constitution say the book is silly and has no social redeeming value to the African American community. The question The Insite has is would you buy the book? My second question - do you think there is a need for such a book to catalog the wealth of African American families in this country for the sole purpose of social status? I thought it was an interesting subject!

What a great ideal JOLO feels, It would be nice to know that not all black folks who are wealthy are into sports and entertainers. alot of black folk don't want their wealth exposed for all to see because some what to be perceived as being like the average working man.
You can't believe that this book is going to do that. Its just another false denial. I feel this is comming more from the black elite not wanting their business out their for people to critize. I think alot of them proably vote and contribute to Republican causes yet claim to be democrats.

This guy is a damn joke. He's one of those elitist blacks who's looking for social status. I would not buy his book. It would only seek to divide our already fragmented community.

Hey Isaih, What's the problem? This seems to be the same type of book which you were so proud to be a part of, only a different title. Remember Who's Who in Black Houston.

Are you sure it's the same thing. If I'm a hypocrite let me know. But keep in mind, I'm not attacking his book the people in Atlanta are and I'm throwing the question to you guys. There's a slight difference there. But if you think I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth let The Insite know...

I don't hate alot of things but I can't stand how black "educated" folk in ATL think that there so much better educated and forward thinking than any other city.

There are much better colleges than Spellman and Morehouse.

The black community in houston even though it has issues, is so much more down to earth from top to bottom.

The Who's who is just a book about prominent people who made great contributions. Not so much about salary if I can recall.
So I don't feel Mr. Insite is talking from both sides of his mouth. What really bothers me so much is how some of us have such a problem with this book.

Aint no book going to divide anyone. I think anything it'll expose these folk who keep poverty pimping the poor and show exactly the "hidden wealth" that they keep telling us we in our community don't have.

Im very curious to see the millions of dollars these black elites are holding on to yet at the same time trying to keep blaming the white man.

I'll be the first to say on the Insite, I won't be listed anywhere in that book.

I like the idea personally. It would be interesting to know about the black families who have means and whether they have perpetual wealth like the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts.

My family wouldn't be on Mr. Grahams list, but I am not offended.

Personally, I wish Graham was not involved with this project because his Our Kind of People was really boring IMO. It was interesting from a historical standpoint, but he is not a compeling writer.

I am all for the book. I won’t buy it but I would like to see the top 10 list. If anything this book will uplift the community. Many people including blacks believe the only we make money is by some form of entertainment. So if someone wants to write a book giving the real story I am all for it. Also the Who’s who list is nothing like this list. I saw people in there fresh out of college. It is more of a directory of blacks in Houston.

I don't know if I like the motives, but I don't think it is as divisive as all that was said. I think it's an honor to be in Who's Who.. (I was slack last year, but I'll be in there this year!) I wouldn't buy it though. It would be awesome to show to some young people though assuming the tone is not condescending.

When will this list/book be out? I've checked on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and I don't see anything about it.

I do not see a problem with having a register of affluent blacks. I see this as something to strive for rather than be jealous or hateful of. No one can control the family into which they are born and one should not be ashamed of their successes.

Graham received a lot of negative feedback from "Our Kind of People", however, I do not believe that his opinion should be villified or denied simply because others don't agree with it. We ought to be proud of successful members of the community as opposed to saying that they are dividing our community.

I love the idea of knowing our present and past black elite, but I believe that leaving out the Jayz's and the Russell Simmons's will be a true disservice.
The reality is that college is not a privilege to all blacks. Black Americans should be recognized bu their artistic abilities as well as their collegiate and social backgrounds. Their are some blacks who give back to their communities and create future legacies for their families

Hi,

I have heard about this book in the past few months that it would be published in summer/fall. Now I can find no mention of it on author's website, Amazon, or at book stores. Does it really exist? Is it a joke? Is it available now? I would love some accurate info on this. Please help! Thanks.

Tell Mr. Graham and the rest of the so-called black elite, for years we were told to name our children english names, private schools etc. White people chose Barack Hussein Obama. A child raised by grandparents, with a muslim name and he didn't belong to any Fraternity, Masonic group, Boule etc. His Mother wasn't a Link and his Daddy sure wasn't a Que dog. I grew up one rung under Mr. Graham in Virginia. I learned one thing from those "right kind of so called southern gentlemen" Don't be a bragger. The loudest in the room is the weakest. The Black Elite never every cut the check and purchased a golf club. You wined about not being excepted in your first book. Do like the Jews do, buy your own exclusive club!! These Black groups are a joke. At the end of the day we are all Black. I tell my wife all the time- You can't wear your Spelman/Delta shirt outside your suit. Oprah (no legacy) Bob Johnson (Miss. born no legacy). I think I have made my point.

Do me a favor. Tell Valerie Jarrett, John Rogers and Earl Graves etc.(who can't seem to break to $50 million dollars gross on his own BE list) cut the check, buy office buildings in Manhattan or a Golf Course. Sheila Johnson;s divorce proceeds don't count. John Malone made BET not the Boule!!!!!!!!!!!
