There's an outrage from animal lovers who say wild horses and burros could soon be killed in record numbers by the government.
Activist Ray Field says this isn't the first time. Field runs Wild Horse Foundation, an agency that adopts out wild horses. He says it was in November when state park workers took their riffles and put down more than 70 burros in big bend ranch state park.
Now Field says the federal government may soon kill 33,000 wild horses in Texas and around the country.
But he's offering a solution.
Field says the animals should be returned to the wild where they were found. He says the government has land reserved for the horses but have yet to put them there.
That land is about 19 million acres of federal grounds located in various parts of the country.
State officials tell FOX 26 news they have found alternatives to handling the growing population of burros that have been traveling from Mexico.
The Texas Wildlife and Parks Department is hosting a public meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Houston Zoo to discuss concerns anyone has about how burros and wild horses are handled.
