FATHER GOES TOO FAR IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE!
GALVESTON HUMANE SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR HELP TO FIND AN ABUSER!
The Case:
News reports give the following account: On Jan. 3, a German shepherd-mix dog was taken to Galveston Island Humane Society with a rope embedded so deeply into her neck that it had cut through to her trachea. A veterinarian estimated the dog -- now named Jasmine -- was tied up for about six months. Jasmine is approximately 1 year old. She did not appear to suffer any permanent damage from the injury.
“The American public cares deeply about the welfare of animals. Failure to provide basic levels of care represents an appalling betrayal of the trust our pets place in us. It demands accountability,” said Dale Bartlett, The HSUS’ deputy manager for animal cruelty issues.
The Investigators:
The Galveston Police Department is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Sgt. Joel Caldwell at 409-771-5520.
WHITNEY SAYS GOOD BYE TO THE DAY!
BUT IT'S NOT THE END OF GREAT DAY HOUSTON!Great Day Houston host Whitney Casey (pictured left)
said Thursday she will leave KHOU (Channel 11) in early March to write a book, and station officials said the show will continue with a new host.
Casey, who will announce her departure plans to viewers in a show that was taped Thursday and airs at 9 a.m. today, said her final day on the air will be March 6, the show's second anniversary.
Casey, a former CNN reporter and anchor who also writes a weekly column for the Chronicle, said she has signed a contract with Penguin Group's Perigee imprint to write a book titled Manopoly to be published this fall or for Valentine's Day 2009.TSU HAS A NEW PRESIDENT IN CHARGE!
MEET DR. JOHN RUDLEY!Texas Southern University students, faculty and staff will be welcoming a new president who's been chosen by the board of regents earlier today.
John Rudley has been named president after months of weeding out candidates. Rudley was the interim president at the University of Houston.
Rudley will put an end to General J. Timothy Boddie Jr.'s reign as interim president and replace former TSU president Priscilla Slade, who faces charges of misapplication of fiduciary property.
Slade is accused of spending more than $500,000 of TSU money on personal expenses including furniture, bar tabs, and landscaping for her home.
Her trial was declared as a mistrial after jurors were deadlocked about making a decision, and the judge said the retrial would not be scheduled until at least this spring.
THE OFFICIAL MEL DAVIS BENEFIT!
REMEMBERING THEIR FRIEND ON HIS DAY OF BIRTH!

By: Kalele 'Party King' Thumbutu - The Party King attended The Official Mel Davis Benefit and Birthday Party Wednesday night. The event was held in the heart of the Richmond strip at the Identity Bar (5959 Richmond @ Fountainview). Mel Davis lost his life in 2007 in a tragic car accident, however his memory lives on and friends, family and fellow Houston night life party goers came out to celebrate his birthday as well as his life Wednesday night. All proceeds from the night’s event went to the Davis/Jones family. In true Mel Davis spirit the crowd moved and grooved to the sounds of DJ LaRose throughout the night. Some faces in the crowd included Ms. Gladys (Mel’s Mom), Lady Kia, Rob G from 97.9 the Box, 925 entertainment, and A Few Good Men…..to name a few!
IS BORRIS MILES FACING LEGAL PROBLEMS FOR HIS BEHAVIOR AT A PARTY?
DO YOU THINK THIS WILL AFFECT HIS POLITICAL CAREER?Note: The Insite spoke to Mr. Miles about these allegations early Saturday morning and he says at this time he's been advised not to make any statements. But Miles says he will eventually tell his side of the story and the Insite will bring you the details!
The Harris County District Attorney's Office is investigating a complaint that state Rep. Borris Miles, D-Houston, made threats and brandished a gun at a holiday party last month.
According to witnesses, Miles entered a St. Regis Hotel ballroom uninvited, confronting guests, displaying a pistol and forcibly kissing another man's wife.
David Harris, who threw the party for his property management company, said he believes Miles, an insurance agent, was angry at him for investing in a rival business.
"He was saying things such as, 'I told you to get out of the insurance business. There ain't room in this town for the two of us. I'm going to come after you and take you down,' " Harris said.
The District Attorney's Office received a written complaint about the incident and is investigating, but officials declined to comment further.
Messages left at Miles' government and insurance offices were not returned Friday.
Rumors about the incident have swirled for weeks in both Houston and Austin. Harris agreed to speak publicly about it last month only after being contacted by the Houston Chronicle. It was not until Friday, however, that the District Attorney's Office confirmed the investigation.
Miles is being challenged in the March 4 Democratic primary for District 146 by former Rep. Al Edwards, whom Miles unseated in 2006.
If the accounts from witnesses are true, it would be the second incident involving a pistol and Miles.
Last July, Miles shot and wounded a burglar who police said was trying to steal copper from the lawmaker's 9,000- square-foot Third Ward home. Miles, who had a concealed handgun permit and was not charged in the incident, said the shooting was self-defense.
"When he is out and about in public, especially in the district, which is a rough area, he carries a gun with him as a matter of principle," a Miles spokesman, Donald Fields, said at the time.
Miles also gained some notoriety last spring when he personally removed two pieces of art on display at the Capitol that he said were objectionable. The art in an exhibit placed by the Texas Moratorium Network included a depiction of a black man hanging from a rope and an illustration of a man tied to an electric chair with the inscription "Doing God's Work."
According to witnesses to the December incident, Miles walked into the ballroom carrying a wine bottle and a glass.
During their confrontation, Harris said Miles proclaimed himself a "gangster" and "thug," before kissing Harris on both cheeks and then the mouth. Miles then pulled out a gun and placed it in Harris' hand, witnesses said.
"He was acting as if there was some sort of symbolic power struggle, grabbing him by the face," said Nathaniel Rido, who attended the party.
Rido said Miles also kissed his wife, Krysynthia, before leaving, an act that still angers him.
"A public official, acting like that — I was disturbed," he said.
Miles also said at the party that he would "take down" U.S. Congressman Al Green, former local NAACP leader Howard Jefferson and Ben Hall, the city attorney under Mayor Bob Lanier. Hall is representing Harris.
''He disrespected me, he disrespected my guests," Harris said. "This is totally unacceptable."
GROOVES ON A FRIDAY NIGHT: WHO KNEW?
IT'S WHERE ALL THE PEOPLE GO!

It was standing room only at the new Houston nightspot Grooves. The Insite made a stop there Friday evening and found it's probably one of Houston's most popular spots. The line was leterally out the door at the eatery that was once Drexler's. The place was filled with lots of familiar faces including State Representative Borris Miles, Some basketball players (I don't know there names), Kalele 'Party King' Thumbutu, Carl 'Ready For Action' Daniel, Dana Davis, Thadd Hack, Don 'NT' Williams, and AnZeo from Making the Band 4 performed all night long. Thanks to the 'Party King' for using his power to get 'The Insite' free entry into the establishment. Grooves is located at the edge of downtown in the Third Ward!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP A FALLEN OFFICER'S FAMILY?
HARRIS COUNTY INVESTIGATES INMATE'S DEATH!
WAITING ON THE MEDICAL EXAMINER'S REPORT!A Texas State Prison Inmate is dead after an altercation with a Harris County detention officer, county officials tell The Insite.
A spokesman for the sheriff's department says inmate Clarence Freeman (42 years old) became involved in a verbal altercation with an officer in the jail on Thursday.
Freeman is accused of using racial slurs and abusive language towards the officer. The conflict became physical for less than a minute before Freeman was restrained.
As a precaution, the inmate was transferred to the hospital where he later died. A source close to an investigation of the death said the officer may have had Freeman in a choke hold.
The sheriff's office says the officer admits to restraining the inmate around his neck, but noted Freeman was conscious and alert after the incident.
"(The officer) said he did have his arm around the inmate's neck -- holding on to him," said Lt. John Martin. "We are going to wait for the medical examiner to determine what the inmate died of."
Freeman was being held in the Harris County Jail to be a witness for another case.
An autopsy will take place on Friday.

THE BIG GOOD BYE TO ULONDA KIRK AT FOX 26!
WE WILL STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOU ULONDA!

Fox 26 overhead accountant Ulonda Kirk is calling it a day in the television business. She is moving on. Kirk didn't disclose what her next gig is but she did say to more than a dozen friends and co-workers she had some things "pending." Ulonda has been with FOX for 8 years and lots of her favorite people showed up to a luncheon at a local restaurant to say good bye. On that list: Cynthia King, John Heads, Torrey 'T-Dub' Walker, Ray Williams, Melinda Spaulding, The Insite, Brian Willery, and a host of others. Here are some of the pics the Insite snapped at the farewell event. Good luck Ulonda, we all will keep in touch!
THE HOUSTON BRANCH OF THE NAACP SAYS CHUCK ROSENTHAL SHOULD STEP DOWN!
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE D-A SHOULD DO?In a Thursday afternoon press conference the local branch of the NAACP announced Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal should resign. Legal Counsel for the civil rights group says their call for a resignation comes after sexual and racial emails were released from the DA's office. Dr. James Douglas says Rosenthal's office has shown that racism is running rampid in the Criminal Justice Center. Carol Mims Galloway, President of the NAACP, says it's time there is new leadership in the office. What do you think? Should Rosenthal resign or finish out the remainder of his term? Leave your comments here on The Insite!
LAKEWOOD CHURCH RESPONDS TO KELLY SIEGLER'S COMMENTS ABOUT SCREWBALLS AND NUTS!
LAKEWOOD: WE FORGIVE HER BUT WE WON'T BE VOTING FOR HER!
It was Wednesday when the Insite first told you how District Attorney candidate Kelly Siegler said in open court she didn't want an African American on a 2007 jury because he attended Lakewood Church. Siegler said people at Lakewood were "screwballs and nuts." Siegler told FOX 26 she says a lot of crazy things. She was also later quoted as saying her comment was taken out of context. But screwballs and nuts is pretty clear I think. Anyway, Lakewood church responded to Sieglers comments saying, "Lakewood's members are very forgiving. I rather doubt they'll vote for Ms. Siegler, but they will forgive her." The statement was issued by a spokesperson for the church Identified as Donald Lloff, Jr. Not quite sure if Siegler, who attends another church, has apologized to the group. I wonder if she will speak there during the course of her campaign?
DID YOU KNOW THE WORD 'CANADIAN' IN SOME CIRCLES IS CODE FOR NIGGER!
MORE CONTROVERSIAL EMAILS AT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE!
The Insite reported a story on FOX 26 news Thursday night that has been like an urban legend to some Houston attorneys. They've heard rumors there was an email written by a now Chief prosecutor at the Harris County District Attorney's office that describes African Americans on a jury as Canadians. In case you're wondering what the big deal is Canadian
according to the Racial Slur Database is a masked term used on Blacks to replace Nigger. The Insite obtained that email from a 2003 case and it states:"PLEASE JOIN ME IN CONGRATULATING ROB FREYER ON A JOB WELL DONE...HE OVERCAME A SUBVERSIVELY GOOD DEFENSE BY MATT HENNESSEY THAT HAD SOME CANADIANS ON THE JURY FEELING SORRY FOR THE DEFENDANT..."
The email was written by Mike Trent, an assistant district attorney 4 years ago to congratulate a co-worker. He tells The Insite initially he thought there were actual Canadians on the jury. Criminal defense attorneys say that would be illegal. He also went on to say he was repeating what the prosecutor who handled the case told him. He says once he realized the word had a double meaning in the context of the comment he addressed the issue. Trent went on to tell The Insite he is not a racist and he would never send such an email. Houston attorney Alvin Nunnery took issue with that. Nunnery says during a case Trent did everything in his power to strike all the African Americans in a pool from the jury. Nunnery, who's a former assistant district attorney, says the Harris County District Attorney needs to be cleaned out from top to bottom. Meanwhile, I could not get a comment from Chuck Rosenthal on this case!

BOY SCOUTS PREPARING TO TAKE ON BULLIES!
IS THIS A GOOD IDEA FOR THE SCOUTS?
For the first time in the 97-year history of the Boy Scouts of America, the organization is requiring new Scouts to learn tips on dealing with bullies to advance ranks. The tips
include:
-- If ignoring the bully doesn't work, stand up for yourself with
words. Rehearse what you want to say so that you will feel in
control of your emotions when you confront the bully.
-- Tell the bully how hurtful it feels to be bullied, and ask why you are the target. Ask the bully to stop.
-- Sometimes, agreeing with the bully and having a ready response
will work. ("So what if I have a face fill of zits. What's it to
you?").
-- Hang out with a couple of friends; try not to be alone.
-- Tell an adult you trust, such as a parent, teacher or coach.
SAY GOOD BYE TO THE HIGH COST OF PASSPORTS!
WALLET SIZE CARDS COSTING ONLY $45!The State Department says it'll start accepting applications February First for passport cards as
alternatives to passports for Americans traveling to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The wallet-sized cards will be available to U.S. citizens by this spring. They'll cost $45 for adults and $35 for children. That's cheaper than a regular passport. Adults who have passports will have to pay only $20. The cards will be accepted for land and sea crossings between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, but not for flights. The new passport cards are being offered as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, or WHTI. The first phase of that took effect last year, requiring U.S. travelers returning by plane from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean to carry a passport. That led to a
temporary surge in demand for passports, with wait times for passports increasing from four to six weeks to 12 weeks. Those waits have since returned to normal.
IS THE WIFE OF THE ACCOUNTANT TO THE STARS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?
KERRY ENDORSES OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!
WILL IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE RACE?
Barack Obama has won the presidential endorsement of Sen. John Kerry, the Democrats' 2004 nominee who lost to George W. Bush.
Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, plans to announce his support Thursday at a rally at the College of Charleston, said a Democrat familiar with Kerry's decision.
The 2004 nominee will argue that Obama can best unite the country and has the potential to create transformational change, the person said.

WHAT DO YOU THINK DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE C.O. BRADFORD IS SAYING?
IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO PUT YOURSELF IN BRADFORD'S SHOES!
Since C.O. Bradford is not talking to the media on camera during this Chuck Rosenthal ordeal, what do you think he's saying or feeling as all of this unfolds in our very eyes. As many of you already know Bradford is the Democrat who plans to run for Rosenthal's seat. He's also the former Houston Police Chief who was prosecuted and cleared of perjury charges under Rosenthal's administration. So the big question is: What's going through Bradford's mind as he's watching all of this drama unfold with the emails in the news media? The Insite would love to hear from you!
UNION PROBLEMS AT METRO'S POLICE DEPARTMENT!
WILL THERE BE A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION BECAUSE OF MISSING UNION MONEY?
The Insite has learned Houston's Metro Police Chief has asked the Harris County District Attorney to investigate his department's union...This comes just days after the leadership of the Metro Police Officers' Union resigned amid allegations of missing money. Chief Tom Lambert, who's a member of the union, has given up his membership with the group. Lambert also says he will no longer allow payroll deductions to be taken from officers' checks by the union. There were around 120 Metro officers in the union who say their insurance premiums and other obligations were not paid by the bookkeeper at the police group who also happens to be a Metro officer. Some officers on the force complain they're not able to get health insurance because their premiums weren't paid by the union!
DID DISTRICT ATTORNEY CANDIDATE KELLY SIEGLER REALLY SAY THAT ABOUT LAKEWOOD CHURCH?
SIEGLER: I SAY CRAZY THINGS ALL THE TIME!
It was today when we obtained a court transcript that raised a lot of eyebrows. It was a transcript from a 2007 trial. Siegler apparently didn't want an African American gentleman on the jury of the case. So according to the transcript received by The Insite Siegler says the man shouldn't be on the jury because he attended Lakewood Church. The star prosecutor went even further with her explanation of why. She says
, "To start with, he's a member of Lakewood Church. And we have had a running agreement, my partner Luci Davidson and I have, since we started, that people who go to Lakewood are screwballs and nuts. I'm very familiar with that church. We try our hardest not to put anybody who goes to Lakewood regularly on any jury, he's a pretty devout member of Lakewood Church. That's one reason that scared me about the man." When confronted with the issue by FOX 26 Seigler said, "I say crazy things all the time I'm sure." Legal analysts say Siegler has essentially admitted to doing any and everything to win a case. Some say that should give voters pause when they consider the truthfulness of their next District Attorney in Harris County.Note: The Insite has included a copy of the transcript!

WHY DO PEOPLE SAY STUPID THINGS?
THE GOLF CHANNEL ANCHOR IS NOW SORRY FOR WHAT SHE SAID!

Golf Channel suspended anchor Kelly Tilghman for two weeks on Wednesday for saying last week that young players who wanted to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."
Tilghman was laughing during the exchange Friday with analyst Nick Faldo at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, and Woods' agent at IMG said he didn't think there was any ill intent.
But the comments became prevalent on news shows Wednesday, and the Rev. Al Sharpton joined the fray by demanding she be fired immediately. Golf Channel didn't know who would replace Tilghman in the booth this week at the Sony Open or next week at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
"There is simply no place on our network for offensive language like this," Golf Channel said in a statement. Tilghman became golf's first female anchor last year when the PGA Tour signed a 15-year deal in which Golf Channel broadcasts the first three events of the year, weekday coverage of all tour events, and full coverage of the Fall Series and opposite-field events. The suspension ends in time for the Buick Invitational on Jan. 24, when Woods will make his 2008 debut.
Faldo and Tilghman were discussing young players who could challenge the world's No. 1 player toward the end of Friday's broadcast at Kapalua when Faldo suggested that "to take Tiger on, maybe they should just gang up for a while." "Lynch him in a back alley," Tilghman replied.
"While we believe that Kelly's choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate," Golf Channel said in its statement. "Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately." Woods and Tilghman have known each other 12 years. She was picked to host a club demonstration with Woods in south Florida when he talked about new products from Nike Golf. Tilghman was helped when Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent at IMG, said it was a non-issue and considered the matter "case closed." "Tiger and Kelly are friends, and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly," Steinberg said Tuesday night in a statement released by Golf Channel. "Regardless of the choice of words used, we know unequivocally that there was no ill-intent in her comments." Tilghman had said in a previous statement she apologized directly to Woods, and the immediate support from Woods' camp was critical.
BACARISSE SAYS ROSENTHAL SHOULD RESIGN NOW WHILE THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON EVERSOLE!
I GUESS THE SOAP OPERA IN HARRIS COUNTY CONTINUES!
Here's the latest press release from former Harris County Clerk Charles Bacarisse in the Chuck Rosenthal saga:
Charles Bacarisse today (Tuesday) said Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal has lost his ability to fulfill his public duties and should resign his office immediately. Bacarisse’s action comes just days after he fully supported the Harris County Republican Party’s drive to remove the controversial prosecutor from the March 2008 GOP Primary ballot. Bacarisse also clarified that, while he is deeply troubled by the firestorm of allegations surrounding Commissioner Jerry Eversole, he was not yet prepared to call for the Commissioner’s resignation.
Below is Bacarisse’s statement:
Today I am asking the people of Harris County to join me in requesting Chuck Rosenthal’s resignation effective immediately. This is not an easy call for me to make personally, because Mr. Rosenthal has offered years of service to our community — and I know his family is hurting. But this is a call I have a duty to make, because Mr. Rosenthal has lost both the public trust and the moral authority required to serve effectively as District Attorney of Harris County.
As you know, my Party recently convinced Mr. Rosenthal not to seek re-election, and I salute our party leadership for the steps they took with my full support. What my Party did was important, because it shows how those of us in the grassroots are ready and able to take back our Party from arrogant, reckless, and out-of-touch incumbents.
But this is bigger than politics now — and after searching my heart, and after reviewing the terribly disturbing additional information that has come to light since last week, it is clear that we need to take steps beyond those important political measures.
We cannot indulge, nor should we accept, a situation in Harris County where a compromised District Attorney is also responsible for investigating allegations of ethical abuses by other high-ranking county officials, or destruction of evidence by common citizens, or any other similarly conflicted scenario. We are all deeply disturbed by the information that has been brought to light regarding Commissioner Eversole — and to be clear, I am not calling for the Commissioner’s resignation here today — but the notion of Mr. Rosenthal being involved at any level with an investigation into the very serious issues surrounding Commissioner Eversole, to cite one scenario, defies any concept of good government.
Again, this is about doing the right thing. It’s about cleaning up the embarrassing mess, the politics as usual we have in Harris County. By myself, of course, I have no authority to enforce this request, but I sincerely believe our District Attorney would be performing one of his most important acts of public service if he were to spare his colleagues in the DA’s office the indignities he has thrust upon them.
If he does step aside, we have a very capable, dedicated professional ready to step in. Bert Graham, the First Assistant District Attorney, is a widely respected career prosecutor with superb experience. The DA’s office wouldn’t skip a beat with Bert coming in, and in my view the sooner this could happen the better.

THE INSITE IS VICTIMIZED AGAIN - WHEN WILL ALL OF THIS CRIME STOP!
MY BANK CARD WAS BALLING IN LOUISIANA WHILE I WAS WORKING HERE IN TEXAS!
Sometimes it takes a brick to fall on my head to get it. I went to a gas station on Sunday and tried to use my bank card and it was declined. I thought it was the machine so I just got cash out of my wallet and paid for the gas. You know I'm a $20 a day type person. I just can't stand the thought of filling up a large gas tank at a cost of $70.00. Anyway, later I went to the Exxon in my neighborhood Tuesday to get gas and I was declined again. I still didn't get it. I just purchased the gas with another credit card. The only way I could get any use out of the bank card was by using my pin number for transactions. So, while driving home from work on Tuesday night I get a call. The voice on the other end asks if I've been shopping in Louisiana over the weekend. I tell the now identified credit card security person I haven't been in Louisiana in weeks. Well, he said my bank card has and it was having a ball at my favorite store Walmart. My bank card which is still sitting in my wallet also made it to other swanky stores and gas stations in Louisiana according to my electronic account. By the time the final total was in my bank card managed to spend over $2000 by itself without buying me a single beer. What an amazing trick. Especially, since my bank card was still in my wallet. Then I figured it out. Somewhere - somebody was able to clone my bank card. Then the whole experience started to suck. So, just two years after having my car broken into and losing my ipod, laptop computer, sony video camera, tripod, 2 winter coats, leather jacket and a fruit basket, someone has now cloned my bank card. Money just flew out the window like a bird with wings. Why do people steal and commit crimes? They suck. Anyway, I say all of this to say - get rid of your credit and bank cards. They're too easy to be cloned by someone. I will begin to use only cash from now on. Call me a drug dealer because it will only be crumpled dollars bills in my pockets from now on!
Here are some of the charges that appeared on my bank account:

COUNTY JUDGE ED EMMETT FIRES BACK AT BACARISSE!
HE SAYS BACARISSE ISSUED A STATEMENT OF ERRORS!This is a press release from County Judge Ed Emmett - He's going after Charles Bacarisse:
to peddle misinformation to voters.
Judge Emmett's opponent, a former elected official who resigned before his term expired so he could run for a new job, released an error-filled
statement Monday alleging Judge Emmett had done nothing to address concerns about the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. Handlers for Judge Emmett's opponent also charged that the incumbent judge, who has the support of hundreds of conservative and elected leaders, wanted to use taxpayer dollars for a professional soccer stadium.
"Both statements are outright falsehoods," said Judge Emmett. "Once again,
it is unfortunate my opponent and his attack dogs have resorted to spreading
misinformation to real conservatives about my record. Fortunately, anyone
familiar with the issues will see this for what it is - another cheap shot
by a desperate career bureaucrat who has never held a job in the private
sector."
Judge Emmett continued: "It's kind of startling how much my opponent doesn't
know about local government, especially since he served in office for a
dozen years. The Sports Authority was created by the Texas Legislature and
can only be dismantled or reformed by them. As for the soccer stadium, that's
a City of Houston project and the county isn't even involved."
Judge Emmett said he has faith in conservative voters. He said he knows they
realize he helped secure the biggest property tax rate cut in county history
and successfully fought for additional property tax breaks for seniors.
Judge Emmett stood up to those in Austin who wanted to take control of local
transportation dollars. He's called for ethics reform in county government
and attacked a wide range of problems involving everything from public
health care to transportation.
"We're focused on the future in this campaign," Judge Emmett said. "The
people deserve no less. It's too bad my opponent, a career bureaucrat, has
clearly lost sight of the fact that real public service is built on a
foundation of honesty."
WAY TO GO LSU!
LSU Crushes Ohio State, 38-24
The Super Dome has been a home away from home for the LSU Tigers in recent seasons, and it was the same story in 2008, as LSU rolled to a 38-24 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes to claim its second national title in five seasons.
Big plays on offense, defense and special teams (and an uncanny ability to convert third downs) propelled the Tigers on a 31-0 run to put the game essentially out of reach midway through the third quarter.
The championship gave Les Miles his first with the school and validated a program still trying to escape from the shadow of Nick Saban. For OSU, it was a second-consecutive disappointing finish in a title game -- and a humbling loss all the way around.
NOW IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE A REAL FIGHT!
BACARISSE: HEY ED, WHERE'S THAT AUDIT YOU PROMISED THE PEOPLE?
Two of the candidates for Harris County Judge have gone to their respective corners and now it's time to come out swinging. Charles Bacarisse has come out throwing the first major blow against Ed Emmett. Both want to be your next County Judge. Here is the latest press release from Bacarisse's camp:
HOUSTON – Where is Ed Emmett’s promised audit of the Sport Authority?
Conservative leader Charles Bacarisse today called on appointed county judge Ed Emmett to release his long-promised audit of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and tell voters how much of their tax dollars he plans to spend on a stadium for Houston’s pro soccer team. Bacarisse’s action today was prompted by a meeting Mr. Emmett attended on May 15, 2007 before a political audience of Cherry Tree Republicans.
According to eyewitness accounts from those who also attended the May meeting, the appointed judge made two specific statements that raise new questions:
- He promised to audit the Sports Authority and to release those findings to the public.
- The appointed judge also said he would consider using part of the Authority’s car rental/hotel tax to construct a new stadium for Houston’s professional soccer team.
After reviewing of the public record, the temporarily appointed head of county government has failed to release, or even to initiate, the audit he promised over seven months ago. Moreover, his proposal to spend public tax dollars on a pro soccer stadium is not only fiscally irresponsible, but also illegal. By law, Sports Authority resources cannot be allocated to venues that have not been approved first by the voters via a countywide referendum.
“Once again, the temporarily appointed judge has demonstrated his cavalier willingness to throw our tax dollars around without prior thought or consulting the people,” Bacarisse spokesman Chris Begala said. “His statements to a political audience just weeks after his appointment behind closed doors raise three serious questions: why hasn’t he begun the audit he promised taxpayers; how much of our money does he intend to spend on a stadium that has not even been approved by the voters; and if he doesn’t take his campaign promises in May seriously, why should we, in turn, take anything he says now seriously?”
“Time and again, on property taxes, on commuter tolls, on county spending, on immigration, and now this, we see how Ed Emmett represents politics as usual — where the overburdened taxpayers constantly get ignored by the powerful,” Begala added. “Charles Bacarisse is running to change county government and give us the new start we need.”

LAWRENCE OTIS GRAHAM IS AT IT AGAIN: HE WANTS TO DIVIDE THE BLACK COMMUNITY?
IS THERE A NEED TO CATALOG BLACK AMERICA'S RICHEST AND MOST SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE FAMILIES?
First, let me thank Bernadette 'Atlanta Correspondent' Brown for an excellent article she emailed to The Insite. It takes a look at author Lawrence Otis Grahams latest book. It's called "The Our Kind of People 800 Register." You may remember Graham from a cover story where he was the subject matter back in 1992. He went undercover as a busboy at a very exclusive New York club where his application was rejected for membership. Now the ivy league educated author has upset a lot of people in Atlanta. He's planning on touring the country and writing a book about America's wealthiest African American families. Critics of the book say it's an effort by Graham to separate the haves from the have nots in the Black community. And according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Graham says he is doing exactly that. The man who considers himself part of the black elite says African Americans should have a social register (i.e. New York Social Register) just like the white community has done so for over 100 years. Those against the book like June Dobbs Butts in Atlanta, a daughter of civic leader John Wesley Dobbs says, "he (Graham) is such a social climber it is pathetic." Dobbs went on to say, "he is looking for validation from the wrong places." Graham counters that argument saying, "I know it is going to upset people, but I have an important goal in mind. " He says the book is about more than finding the top African American families in America. He says he's also trying to address the negative images that seem to dominate the media and mind-set. Graham says the only black success stories we seem to want to embrace are athletes, comedians and entertainers. Which means the author will likely include Bill Cosby, Bob Johnson (BET), and Oprah Winfrey. But he's reportedly leaving off Jay Z, Michael Jordan, and Tyler Perry. Graham's so called formula requires a pedigree that some of our favorite celebrities can't quite live up to. For instance the criteria to make the list: what colleges you attended, who did you marry of influence and what's your family's social status. Some of those who were interviewed by the Constitution say the book is silly and has no social redeeming value to the African American community. The question The Insite has is would you buy the book? My second question - do you think there is a need for such a book to catalog the wealth of African American families in this country for the sole purpose of social status? I thought it was an interesting subject!

ANCHORWOMAN LOSES $700,000 JOB AFTER ALLEGEDLY HITTING A COP!
ROGER CLEMENS SAYS YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HALL OF FAME VOTE!
EARLE WANTS ONE OF HIS OWN TO BECOME THE NEXT DISTRICT ATTORNEY!
HE CALLS IT QUITS AFTER 30 YEARS IN OFFICE!Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle is endorsing his top assistant prosecutor, Rosemary Lehmberg, in the race to succeed him.
Earle, a Democrat, isn't running for re-election after more than 30 years in office. He has prosecuted some of the biggest names in Texas politics through his Public Integrity Unit.
Most recently he's been in the spotlight for a criminal investigation against former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and his associates.
Earle left the door open Monday to lending his name to Internet political fundraising. But he says it would have to further the causes of justice, democracy and the rule of law, and not be solely for one party.
STUDENTS WILL NOW BE ABLE TO PRAY OR MEDITATE IN TEXAS SCHOOLS!
DO YOU THINK CHILDREN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PRAY IN SCHOOL?Texas schoolchildren will continue to pray or meditate during a daily minute of silence after a federal court threw out a challenge to the state law.
The ruling issued Thursday stems from a complaint by a North Texas couple who say one of their children was told by an elementary school teacher to keep quiet because the minute is a "time for prayer."
The complaint filed in 2006 by David and Shannon Croft names Gov. Rick Perry and the suburban Dallas school district the Crofts' three children attend.
The 2003 law allows children to "reflect, pray, meditate or engage in any other silent activities" for one minute at the beginning of each school day.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn upheld the constitutionality of the law, concluding that "the primary effect of the statute is to institute a moment of silence, not to advance or inhibit religion."
Neither the Crofts nor their attorney, Dean Cook, returned calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Perry said justice was served in the ruling. "Whether schoolchildren use their morning moment of silence to pray or to prepare for a pop quiz, tolerance and personal freedom are lessons that should be taught and exercised regardless of our environment," the governor said.
TEXAS MAN ACCUSED OF EATING HIS GIRLFRIEND?
BODY PARTS FOUND COOKED ACCORDING TO POLICE!Deputies responding to a 911 call in this East Texas town of Tyler found a gruesome scene: a human ear boiling in a pot on a stovetop and a hunk of flesh impaled on a fork sitting atop a plate on the kitchen table.
Authorities believe that the man arrested in the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend cooked parts of her body and may have tried to eat them — actions he described to them in the emergency call that led them to the grisly discovery.
Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday on a capital murder charge. He was in solitary confinement at a jail on a $2 million bond Sunday night and did not have an attorney, officials said.
Authorities say it is unclear whether McCuin consumed any part of the woman's body.
"We cannot prove that he did," Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith said Sunday. "He was either going to, had been or led us to think that he was doing it."
McCuin is also the suspect in the early Saturday morning stabbing of a man described as his estranged wife's boyfriend, Smith said.
McCuin has a criminal record that includes driving while intoxicated and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. When he was arrested, McCuin had an outstanding felony retaliation warrant.
Smith said McCuin was known to authorities and had "a history of violence," including assaulting his estranged wife, his girlfriend and his sister.Officials believe the horrific chain of events began when Jana Shearer, McCuin's girlfriend, was taken by McCuin from her home late Friday night and killed.
Smith said McCuin then drove to his estranged wife's home, where he stabbed his wife's boyfriend, William Veasley, 42. Veasley was in intensive care Sunday night.
McCuin was still in that home when deputies arrived, but he jumped into his car and escaped after a short chase, Smith said. "We did not know at the time that he had murdered anyone," Smith said. "We thought it was a disturbance or an assault."
McCuin wasn't seen again until Saturday morning, when he arrived at the home he shared with his mother and called her into the garage so she could "come see what he had done," Smith said.
His mother and her boyfriend saw the remains of Shearer, authorities said. McCuin's mother and her boyfriend fled the home and flagged down a police officer. McCuin dialed 911 after they left and told an emergency dispatcher he had killed Shearer and was boiling her body parts, Smith said.
When sheriff deputies arrived, McCuin barricaded himself in the home for a short time before coming out. After he emerged, a tactical team entered and found Shearer's body, Sgt. Gary Middleton said. They also found the grisly scene in the kitchen.
After McCuin was arrested and placed in the back of a patrol car, he kicked out the vehicle's side window before being put in additional restraints, Middleton said.
Shearer appeared to have died from blunt trauma to her head, Smith said. She may have been kidnapped Friday night, when her mother saw her get into McCuin's truck.
Detectives were trying to determine where the killing happened. They think McCuin drove to his
FOX NEWS: NOT MANY AFRICAN AMERICAN CELEBRITIES ARE FOLLOWING OPRAH'S LEAD WITH OBAMA!
DID BEYONCE', DENZEL, OR MAYA ANGELOU GIVE BARACK ANY MONEY YET?Oprah Winfrey’s backing of Barack Obama for president hasn’t influenced a lot of other heavy hitting black celebrities to join her yet.
Her two most favorite authors, Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, have not opened their pocketbooks yet for Obama. (Angelou has traditionally been a Clinton supporter.)
Neither has Spike Lee nor Denzel Washington, although the latter’s wife Pauletta sent Obama $2,300. Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. has put his bucks in Hillary Clinton’s campaign, as has Quincy Jones.
Also missing from Obama’s list of donors in the current election cycle is BET Chairman and Founder billionaire Robert L. Johnson. The regular Democratic donor did give Hillary Clinton $4,600 in 2007. The last time he sent a check to Obama was in 2006, for $2,100.
Obama’s celeb donors include the recently controversial Will Smith, but not Chris Gardner, the multi millionaire whom Smith played in "The Pursuit of Happyness." Obama did receive donations from the newly married Eddie Murphy and the always funny Chris Rock.
But neither Sean "Diddy" Combs nor Shawn "Jay Z" Carter has pitched in for the Illinois senator as of yet. Jay Z’s fiancée Beyonce Knowles has also remained silent. Her father, Mathew, last sent Obama $1,000 for his senate campaign. Winfrey, meanwhile, may like Obama but hasn’t put the weight of her fortune behind him yet. Oprah and boyfriend Stedman Graham, according to federal campaign records, donated only $2,300 each to Obama’s campaign at the party held at Winfrey’s Montecito, California mansion last September. They could have donated twice that amount. Aside from that event, the enormously charitable Winfrey seems to have been otherwise uninterested in politics all these years. It’s been a decade since she’s donated even a penny from her hard earned empire to any candidate’s cause. Even now, her endorsement of Obama hasn’t led to any contribution to the Democratic Party in any form. Maybe she’s waiting to see if Obama is the official candidate. Source: FOX News 411 File!
DID THEY REALLY TIE THE KNOT: BEYONCE AND JAY Z!
ANY HOUSTONIANS OUT THERE WITH THE INSIDE SCOOP?From News of the World: BEYONCE KNOWLES and her hip-hop man JAY-Z have secretly married.
The pair tied the knot in a hush-hush ceremony at pal GIORGIO ARMANI's house in Paris last month, in front of family and close friends. All the guests were sworn to secrecy, and Mr and Mrs, erm, Z's publicity people have been emphatically denying rumours that the couple have said I Do.
But I tracked down a guest at the wedding and can finally reveal that it's true.
My source said: "It was a lovely, intimate ceremony and a very emotional wedding.
"They wanted to avoid all the usual fuss and attention that normally follows them everywhere and celebrate with the closest people in their lives. Beyonce, like always, looked absolutely radiant, and couldn't stop smiling.
WIFE OF SUGAR LAND COUNCILMAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT!
JAN SCHIFF WAS 57 YEARS OLD AND THE MOTHER OF TWO!Residents in Fort Bend County are mourning the death of an area civic leader who was struck by a vehicle while jogging.
Jan Schiff, 57, died from her injuries Saturday at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. Schiff was taken by Lifeflight to the hospital after a truck hit her along the intersection of Sweetwater Boulevard and Greystone.
Schiff was the wife of Sugar Land District 4 City Council Member Michael Schiff.
Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace said, "The number of individuals that Jan has touched is countless in her years of community service with numerous non-profit organizations and in her position at Fort Bend Independent School District." Schiff was a program coordinator for Volunteer in Public Schools.
Schiff is survived by two children.
The accident remains under investigation.
ROGER CLEMENS FIRES BACK!
FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST HIS FORMER TRAINER! In a defamation lawsuit filed Sunday night, Roger Clemens claims Brian McNamee, his longtime trainer and chief accuser of steroid abuse, was threatened with jail if he didn't connect the pitcher to steroids.
The lawsuit was filed electronically with the Harris County civil courts Sunday evening just before CBS locally aired Clemens' interview on 60 Minutes.
"I don't know if I'll ever get the naysayers back. I don't know what I'm going to get. Maybe some of my name back," a frustrated Clemens said Sunday. Clemens said this lawsuit will not keep him from testifying before Congress, which he plans to do without asking for immunity or invoking any rights.
The former Houston Astro is being called to testify about McNamee's allegations that the trainer injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormones between 1998 and 2001.
The lawsuit doesn't request a specific dollar amount and Clemens' Houston lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said they filed the suit not to get money, but to clear Clemens' name and discover how the allegations against Clemens came about.
Hardin said they want to learn exactly what was done and not done by federal agents and other investigators who helped U.S. Sen. George Mitchell implicate Clemens in a report on steroid use for Major League Baseball.

THE INSITE READERS HAVE SPOKEN AND THE WINNER IS....
IT WAS A VERY CLOSE RACE HERE ON THE INSITE!A recent poll here on The Insite asked voters who would they like to see as State Representative in District 146. The votes have been counted and Insite readers have chosen the incumbent Borris Miles. But it was a very close race and an indicator with some strong campaigning either man - Miles or Al Edwards could actually take the election in the real world. The final tally was 51% of the vote for Miles while Edwards garnered 48%. In the end it appears those who have voted are sending Miles back to Austin to represent the people of district 146 on this site. Do you agree?
