THE CITY WILL NOT TOLERATE RACIAL OR GENDER DISCRIMINATION!I am gravely concerned with the latest reported incidents of intimidation and harassment against minority and women firefighters. The brave men and women who serve in our Fire Department face enough stress in their daily jobs without the added burden of a hostile work environment.
I join with our Mayor in declaring that the city will not tolerate any form of racial or gender discrimination. I look forward to a full investigation and the prosecution of these crimes to the fullest extent of the law.
Beyond that, we must address the structural problems – such as a lack of diversity on the force – that play a role in making these incidents possible.
Houston has been blessed with an outstanding fire department, full of dedicated men and women who risk their lives to serve the public. We can honor them and help them keep us safe by rooting out discrimination in any form in the department.

Annise only comes out of the woodwork when gender bias appears. Where was she when mayor slashed police overtime? Can you say girl power.
I guess she wants a lesbian or homosexual to run the fire department.
WOW! Talk about going out on a limb! WTH are you gonna say Parker....you fully support discrimination?
What an idiot stating that the city does not tolerate these actions.
Well Annise, explain why the city pays outs thousands each year from lawsuits brought on by employees. You know about this being controller and all. Just using this story to further your political career.
This HFD crap has been going on for years...she's been at City Hall for twelve of those. Now she's concerned...gimme a break...this is why politics sucks!!!
She just wants to be mayor. I hear she's already got a swinger in mind for the police department.
What I find interesting is Annise was the first mayoral candidate to issue a public statement on the recent issues at HFD. Not Petey Brown, not T.J. Huntley, not Roy Morales and not even Gene Locke! Now, they are following her lead.
She just saw a chance to put her name out there again.
