When it happened most people in the audience laughed and didn't quite know what to think but the Insite got the message. It happened Friday afternoon at Gallery Furniture. Jim McIngvale held an appreciation event for the Houston firefighters who saved the bulk of his business during that fire back in May. Hundreds of firefighters and their families showed up. One the tokens of appreciation was the raffling off of several gifts. During the ceremony McIngvale told the firefighters to make sure they held onto their tickets because there would be a raffle for gifts. As Mattress Mac wrapped up Assistant Fire Chief Adrian Trevino made his way to the microphone and said something most didn't understand. He said, "firefighters make sure you give your prize to a family member if you win." So what message was he sending? City workers like news reporters can't accept free gifts for services rendered. It would be ethically questionable and against the city's policy. Most just laughed it off. But I'm sure most of the firefighters got the message. The Insite sure did!

THANKS MATTRESS MAC BUT NO THANKS!

*******
Come on Ike. So you are saying reporters are ethical? Some may be, but most report what the stations want them to report. Also its all about what sells. HPD does a lot of good things everyday, but do they make the news. Of course not! But the one thing that goes wrong makes the news!!! Each station has its own agenda. Whether its reporting liberal or conservative leaning stories or as the Chronicle does, disabling the comments section in Gallery Furniture articles.
I think you totally missed the point of the article. But good luck with that message you're trying to send!
The Insite
Each station has its own agenda? I've worked in news for years, and I've never had a news manager outline "an agenda."
Grow up and stop throwing mud.
Under the City of Houston's rather draconian gift policy it's also illegal for the family members to accept the gifts. Elected officials like the Mayor and Council are exempt; of course.
Thank God our military men and women are fighting the war and not these whiny HPD crybabies. Jeezz!
Our military make a lot less money, get no overtime, don't expect to be treated like royalty, don't mooch of local businesses, are actually in much greater danger, have better trigger control and manage their anger like adults, don't have a union, don't abandon their posts enmasse upon hearing of a fallen/injured comrade, are held to a much higher standard than civilians - and that includes every Barney Fife out there, actually HAVE to maintain themselves in shape and adhere to height/weight standards, can't hide behind a building and nap their watch away, etc. etc.
Anon 6:55pm...hopefully the military is also held to a higher level of reading comprehension, as well as uniform identification then you clearly are. I suggest: read the article, look at the photo. You will read not a single word about HPD, nor see a single HPD uniform. Furthermore, check your facts...well over half of HPD is former and current military types. Also, a HUGE portion of the military "pulling the triggers" are law-men and women back in the world when they are not over in the sand box or rock pile. You, my ignorant friend, are clueless.
