PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAVORS A MAJOR VICTORY!

DO YOU SEE THIS AS GOOD OR BAD NEWS!

Savoring his first big victory in Congress, President Barack Obama on Saturday celebrated the newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus bill as a "major milestone on our road to recovery."

Speaking in his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said, "I will sign this legislation into law shortly, and we'll begin making the immediate investments necessary to put people back to work doing the work America needs done."

At the same time, he cautioned, "This historic step won't be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but rather the beginning. The problems that led us into this crisis are deep and widespread, and our response must be equal to the task."

The bill passed Congress on Friday on party-line votes, allowing Democratic leaders to deliver on their promise of clearing the legislation by mid-February. Obama could sign the measure as early as Monday.

"It will take time, and it will take effort, but working together, we will turn this crisis into opportunity and emerge from our painful present into a brighter future," the president said.

Obama "now has a bill to sign that will create millions of good-paying jobs and help families and businesses stay afloat financially," said Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat who was a leading architect of the measure.

"It will shore up our schools and roads and bridges, and infuse cash into new sectors like green energy and technology that will sustain our economy for the long term," he added in a statement.

Hours earlier, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell offered a different prediction for a bill he said was loaded with wasteful spending.

"A stimulus bill that was supposed to be timely, targeted and temporary is none of the above," he said in remarks on the Senate floor. "And this means Congress is about to approve a stimulus that's unlikely to have much stimulative effect."

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, in the GOP radio address Saturday, contended Democrats settled "on a random dollar amount in the neighborhood of $1 trillion and then set out to fill the bucket."

Obama, who was spending the weekend in Chicago, planned to fly back to Washington on Monday. His schedule for the week ahead includes trips to Denver on Tuesday to talk about his economic agenda and a visit to Phoenix on Wednesday to present a plan to fight foreclosures.

TRYST VIDEO ARCADE TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN BY JUDGE!

JUST BECAUSE WE SHOW ADULT MOVIES DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE SEXUALLY ORIENTED BUSINESS!

A major battle is brewing at the Harris County Civil Courthouse. The city of Houston wants to shut down what they call a sexually oriented business operating illegally and without license.

Tryst Boutique sits just off the North Freeway just before the beltway, and what goes on inside has the city of Houston trying to shut it down.

“This is an adult arcade operating illegally and the city is asking the court to close it and shut it down," Assistant City Attorney Thomas Sultan said.

Houston investigators say triple x movies are shown in 28 small dark booths at the business. Attorneys for the city say the company doesn't have an adult arcade permit to operate and therefore they're breaking the law.

The city ultimately wants to shut down the entire business but for now they're going after the arcade or video booths inside. The fate of the full operation will be decided at a trial in June.

The owner of Tryst, William Becker, was in court. They brought along samples of what's sold in the store and shown in the arcade to prove the store is not all adult.

"Initially, they were in adult business, and they made a business decision that they were gonna change the focus to be more of a store for lovers than an adult business," the store’s spokesman Richard Kuniansky said.

The owners of Tryst said because more than 50 percent of their merchandise is not consider pornographic, and more than 50 percent of the movies shown are not adult they shouldn't be required to get a permit.

A judge sided with the city and granted a temporary injunction shutting down the video section of Tryst Boutique until the full trial on June 22!

TRYST VIDEO ARCADE TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN - FOX NEWS REPORT WITH THE INSITE REPORTING!

IT'S FRIDAY THE 13TH - ARE YOU CONCERNED?

AND WILL YOU GO SEE THE NEW MOVIE?

Lots of people consider Friday the 13th an unlucky day. It has been part of superstition for decades. Not sure if I'm afraid of it. What about you? Oh, and are you going to see the new Friday the 13th Movie? I'm already in line especially since it's being produced by Michael Bay!

HOW THE STIMULUS PACKAGE WILL AFFECT YOU!

A SPECIAL REPORT FROM USA TODAY!

The $789 billion stimulus bill moving toward final passage by Congress will not quickly solve the historic problems besetting the economy, but it could reduce the damage, while providing relief for the unemployed and the uninsured.

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, predicts the biggest effects will occur in 2010 from the bill's spending for aid to state and local governments and on infrastructure such as roads, bridges, transit and other areas.

Moody's Economy.com chief economist Mark Zandi says the bill could help end the economic slide. He warns, however, that the stimulus spending will likely be too small, given the size of the economic decline, and suggests Congress may have to revisit the issue.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says the bill could increase employment in a range of 800,000 to 2.3 million jobs by the fourth quarter of 2009 and 1.2 million to 3.6 million by the fourth quarter of 2010.

HOUSING/CARS: Buyers could get a modest break

If you're in the market for a new car or your first house, the compromise stimulus bill offers modest tax breaks for both kinds of purchases.

First-time home buyers would receive an $8,000 tax credit, and they wouldn't have to repay the government later as is required for the current $7,500 credit. An earlier Senate proposal would have provided all home buyers with a $15,000 credit.

"The home buyer tax credit is a plus for the housing market, but only a small plus," says Mark Zandi of Moody's Economy.com. "The credit … covers only a part of the down payment needed to make a purchase. The housing market will take any help it can get, but it needs more."

Other economists point out that the tax credit will still provide a mild jolt to the market by encouraging home purchases, which in turn should help curb the rapid rate of home price declines.

"While scaled back somewhat, it is still a good idea," says Brian Bethune at IHS Global Insight. "It should induce more home sales in 2009, and this will be an important support for the housing market and the housing industry. It should also buffer the rate of decline of home prices."

The bill also would allow new car buyers to deduct the purchase's sales tax from taxable income.

"We're happy to see the sales tax help, but credit is really the big issue," Chrysler President Jim Press said Thursday in Chicago.

"Ever-increasing credit score requirements by lenders," and slipping consumer credit ratings take many potential buyers out of the pool, Press said.

"A positive development, but we don't think it would have an immediate impact on the market," said Chris Hosford, vice president at Hyundai's U.S. operations.

The average new car purchase price the first 11 months of last year was $28,280, and the average used car trade-in value was $15,203, according to data from the National Automobile Dealers Association. Paul Taylor, NADA chief economist, says states typically tax the difference — $13,077 in this case.

A 5% rate, as in Massachusetts, would be $654, Taylor says, meaning the deduction would reduce taxable income that much.

TAXES: A $400 to $800 credit for many taxpayers

A key element of the stimulus bill would provide most Americans with a tax credit of $400, or $800 for married couples. The tax credit would phase out for single taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $75,000 to $90,000 and married couples with AGI of $150,000 to $190,000.

The tax credit would increase the average taxpayer's paycheck by about $8 a week, prompting some to question whether it will do much to stimulate consumer spending. But for a single worker, the credit is the equivalent of a $500 salary increase, after taxes, says Clint Stretch, managing principal for tax policy at Deloitte Tax. "In this economy, if you walked into your boss' office and demanded a $500 raise, you'd probably get laughed at," he says.

Retirees who receive Social Security benefits and individuals on disability would receive a $250 tax credit, says Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of taxation for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Because these individuals typically don't have withholding, they'll likely receive a check, he says.

Other tax provisions in the stimulus package:

•An expanded earned income tax credit and child tax credit for low-income families.

•A higher education tax credit. Parents of college students would be eligible to claim a tax credit of up to $2,500. The credit is more generous than the existing Hope Scholarship Tax Credit, which maxes out at $1,800 and is available only for the first two years of college, says Amy McAnarney, executive director of H&R Block's Tax Institute. The tax credit, which would be available in 2009 and 2010, phases out for single taxpayers with AGI of $80,000 to $90,000 and married taxpayers with AGI of $160,000 to $180,000.

•A stopgap measure designed to prevent the alternative minimum tax from hitting more than 24 million households in 2009. The AMT was designed to prevent extremely wealthy taxpayers from using loopholes and deductions to avoid taxes. But because it was never indexed to inflation, it has expanded to encompass more upper-middle and some middle-class taxpayers. About 4 million owed the AMT last year.

ENERGY: Weatherizing homes will save money

The agreed-upon stimulus plan provides about $50 billion aimed at ushering in a clean-energy future and includes money or tax credits for Americans to weatherize their homes and buy hybrid cars.

It also commits dollars to upgrading the electricity grid and underwriting renewable energy projects.

"This is going to be an extraordinary boost to our challenge of preparing for global warming legislation and re-energizing the American economy," says Tom "Smitty" Smith, director of Public Citizen's Texas office.

While many analysts cheered provisions to weatherize homes as both an instant way to create jobs and put money in consumers' pockets, some say other initiatives are insufficient and won't deliver a quick economic boost.

The bill sets aside $5 billion to weatherize more than 1 million modest-income homes, saving families an average $350 a year. It devotes $6.3 billion to improve federally backed and public housing projects with new insulation, windows and furnaces. Higher-income households can make similar improvements and get expanded tax credits.

For every dollar spent, such programs produce about $3 in electricity savings, Smith says.

Spending $11 billion to upgrade the nationwide transmission grid to get renewable energy from rural areas to cities and digitize the electric grid to prevent outages is more controversial.

"It's just too little," says Joel Kurtzman, senior fellow at the Milken Institute, an economic think tank. He says it will cost about $100 billion.

Kenneth Medlock, energy fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute, says grid improvements will take years and won't spawn jobs immediately.

Providing a tax credit of up to $7,500 for families that buy plug-in hybrids to spur a new generation of cars "will help the environment and help Detroit," Kurtzman says.

But automakers won't have plug-in hybrids and battery-power electrics in showrooms until next year at the earliest.

"To roll that into a stimulus is almost misleading," Medlock says.

THE SAFETY NET: Jobless get a little extra help

Many of those who are unemployed will get a boost from the stimulus bill, including a $25 increase in weekly benefit checks through 2009 that should help not only those who are out of work but the broad economy as that money gets spent.

Currently, the nationwide average weekly check to those receiving unemployment benefits is $295.05, ranging from $179.08 in Mississippi to $408.28 in Hawaii, according to the National Employment Law Project.

Increasing payments is a good way to stimulate the economy, because, "You can get money into the hands of people right away," says Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University. And people who are unemployed are likely to spend it.

More than 4.8 million people were collecting unemployment benefits at the end of January, up 78% from a year earlier and the highest since records began in 1967, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The bill includes other measures to help those who have lost their jobs. They:

•Lengthen the period in which people can be eligible for extended unemployment benefits. The program, which provides up to 33 weeks of extra jobless benefits after workers exhaust the regular 26 weeks received in most states, was passed last year and was set to expire at the end of March. Under the stimulus bill, the extended benefits would be available through the end of 2009. The NELP estimates this will help about 3 million people.

•Provide money to states that agree to make benefits available to more workers. That would help at least 500,000 people, including some low-wage and part-time workers, who wouldn't otherwise receive unemployment benefits, the NELP says.

•Suspend the taxation of unemployment benefits up to $2,400.

The measure also helps the unemployed and others by increasing the maximum monthly food-stamp benefit by 13%, which lawmakers estimate will help 31 million Americans, half of them children. And the bill provides a subsidy to cover 65% of a worker's COBRA health insurance premiums for up to nine months. COBRA lets workers continue their former employer's coverage for at least 18 months.

BROADBAND: Help for rural areas

The stimulus bill includes $7 billion for broadband deployment in rural markets across the USA.

That high-speed Internet access is counted as "infrastructure" is illuminating in itself, says Gene Kimmelman of Consumers Union.

Under the Bush administration, broadband service was treated as a luxury, he says. The Obama-backed stimulus package, in contrast, "treats Internet communications as an essential service, just like our highways," Kimmelman says.

With that baseline established, Kimmelman says, he expects major public policy shifts to follow, with the goal of making broadband available and affordable to all Americans. Though final language is still being worked out, the $7 billion plan offers "grants," or funding, to companies willing to deploy broadband — wireless or wired — in "underserved" or "unserved" markets.

But there are regulatory strings attached, notes Paul Glenchur of Stanford Group in Washington, D.C.

Companies must offer broadband services in a "non-discriminatory" fashion. That's code for "open access," a politically charged notion that says carriers must treat all Internet services the same.

Likewise, trying to define "underserved" or "unserved" markets could prove challenging, he says.

Why: Satellite-based Internet services already are available in most rural markets. Phone and cable TV companies have also spent billions deploying broadband in hundreds of markets, including rural areas.

The government's plan to essentially subsidize competition in these areas through a grant program "raises a basic question of fairness," Glenchur says.

Kimmelman disagrees. Satellite-based broadband costs around $90 a month, he says, putting it out of reach of many consumers.

DEMOCRATS STRATEGIZE FOR HUTCHISON'S SEAT IN TEXAS!

IS IT POSSIBLE TO TURN HER RED SEAT BLUE?

The Democrats' top Senate campaign strategist has his eye on Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat – but not too closely.

"No place is a bridge too far for Democrats," said New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, briefing reporters Thursday on the 2010 electoral playing field.

The contests bode well for his party, Menendez said. GOP senators have already said they won't run again in Florida, Ohio, Kansas and Missouri, creating especially good opportunities for Democrats. He also pointed to New Hampshire, though just hours later, Sen. Judd Gregg withdrew his nomination as commerce secretary and said he'll stay in the Senate.

But Menendez didn't put Texas on the list, even though GOP Sen. Hutchison is running for governor and is expected to leave the Senate, though not before the end of this year.

"I didn't mention Texas because until we have an opening, we don't have an opening," Menendez said. "But I take Kay Bailey Hutchison at her word, which is that she intends to run for governor and that she intends to resign her seat. If that happens we will have a great candidate in Texas."

Some Hutchison-watchers note that the last time she positioned herself to challenge Gov. Rick Perry, a fellow Republican, she backed out. She insists she won't this time.

As for potential Democratic contenders for her seat, Menendez offered no names when asked.

"Until we have candidates announced themselves, we won't do the announcing for them," he said.

That suggests that his attention is on greener pastures, because two well-known Texas Democrats have been running for two months: Houston Mayor Bill White and former Comptroller John Sharp.

A number of Republicans are also running for the Hutchison seat.

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who chairs the Republicans' Senate campaign effort, has expressed confidence that his party will keep the Texas seat.

Democrats have tried for years to pry loose the GOP grip on Texas' statewide contests. By contrast, Obama won two of the states on Menendez's list of the juiciest targets: Florida and Ohio.

REV. JAMES DAVID MANNING LOOKING REALLY STUPID!

STEWART TAKES ON O'REILLY'S ALLEGED DOUBLE STANDARD!

THE CUEVAS CLAN TOPS THE HONOR ROLL AT HISD!

MEET MARIA, MAYRA, CANDY, JESUS, AND JOSE CUEVAS!

Most parents are delighted when their child makes their school’s “Honor Roll.” Now imagine the pride of José and Angeles Cuevas when all five of their children who attend John H. Reagan HS make the school’s honor roll at the same time — not once, but twice.

During the second and third nine weeks grading periods, the siblings accomplished something that has never been done at Reagan, or possibly any other local high school for that matter. All five siblings made the school’s honor roll at the same time, earning all A’s or A’s and B’s.

“This is certainly a first for Reagan, as far as our registrar can tell,” claims Principal Connie Berger. “We’re very proud of the Cuevas family and their contributions to the Reagan learning community. I know their parents must also be very proud of them.”

María Brenda, Mayra, Candy, Jésus and Jose Cuevas Lara enrolled in Houston ISD schools in 2006 when they moved to Houston from their native hometown of San Luis Potosí, Nueva León, México. Their father had been living and working in Houston for many years before their move. Finally, when the senior Cuevas was granted his citizenship papers in 2006, he saw the opportunity to reunite his large family.

When the Cuevas sisters showed up to register at Reagan midway through the semester, Principal Connie Berger was unsure of Mayra’s and Maria’s success. “Both spoke little English and were a few years older than our typical seniors,” Berger remembers. “In fact, I recall encouraging them to try evening classes instead.” Ultimately, all three sisters enrolled as sophomores.

According to the sisters, Mexican students are provided free education through the 9th grade, and have the option to complete a high school education by paying for their final years. “Because we are a large family with 10 children, our chances to complete high school and continue on to the university were not very good,” states Maria.

“Even if our family could pay for the tuition, we lived very far from the city and it took us an hour to get to school by bus. Our father knew that we could be successful if we had the chance to finish our high school education,” she remembers. “The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and our teacher, Mr. Shea, have helped us learn so much. We are so grateful to our parents who gave us this opportunity — and to Reagan for giving us the chance to prove that we could succeed,” state the elder Cuevas sisters.

“These students came to me with a ‘0’ level of English proficiency,” recalls Michael Shea, ESL teacher. “They became successful learners because of their family’s values and support, but they routinely exceed their instructors’ expectations because of their positive attitudes and their personal work ethics.” In fact, Shea has featured Myra and Candy in updated ESL instruction videos that he is currently preparing for HISD’s districtwide use.

Now, two successful years later, María, Mayra and Candy are getting ready for their graduation in June while their brothers are in their freshman and sophomore years. Four of the siblings are in the business academy where they have learned skills useful in the business field, while the youngest brother is enrolled in the fine arts academy. Mayra would like to become a bilingual teacher and Maria is considering a health career with special needs children while Candy wants to continue her studies in political science. Whatever paths their diplomas take them, the Cuevas sisters seem likely to succeed.

Reagan High School, located at 413 East 13th Street in the Heights, is a Computer Technology magnet with additional academies of study in Fine Arts, Business, Health Sciences and Engineering/Architectural Design.

HAMILTON MIDDLE SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR WINS MAJOR TITLE!

HISD'S JASON HOLMES WINS THE TITLE AGAIN!

The Kickstart Program Karate instructor at HISD’s Hamilton Middle School, Jason Holmes has won his third straight World Championship, winning the 2008 Light Middle Weight Sparring World title. Holmes attended the Super Grand World Games in Sacramento, California in late December to defend his back-to-back world titles.

“Many competitors from all over the world including Ireland, Jamaica, Canada, Europe, Mexico and the US were gunning for me. My final match was against a Guatemalan — it was a lot of fun and I ended up winning my third title in a row,” Holmes recounts.

Holmes has been involved in the martial arts for 22 years, starting when he was just four years old. He is a fifth degree Black Belt in Hawaiian Japanese Kenpo which he learned from his early training in Los Angeles, California where he grew up. He attributes his eight first place NBL world titles, plus an additional 17 second and third place trophies to his naturally competitive spirit.

Hamilton MS was one of the organization’s first programs in the public schools since it began in 1992. Currently, the Hamilton program trains more than 230 students at multiple belt levels through the course of the school day. The students enter the program in sixth grade as white belts and leave in 8th grade as red belts.

What’s next for this world champion? Currently, he is building his own karate school, Jdogs PKKA, in the West Little York area where he trains students from 4 years to 40. And, he looks forward to helping his students reach skill levels where they can experience the high energy of national and world competitions. Fifteen of his students have already traveled with him to the World Games and brought home numerous world titles.

“I want to help these kids become world champions too,” Holmes exclaims. “I feel like I’m a positive role model at a critical time in their lives, and I’m OK with that. While I’m not perfect, I know that as long as I do my best, we’ll all be winners.”

WILL THE INSITE AND CARL WILLIS MAKE THE CUT FOR HBO?

JUST A LITTLE NATIONAL EXPOSURE!

As I've reported here on the Insite HBO and Bryant Gumbel were in town to film a report on Robbie Tolan. The baseball player shot by a Bellaire police officer last year. As part of the segment HBO needed video of local reporters covering the story. A video crew shot The Insite and KPRC's Carl Willis going live from the Bellaire Police Department this week. The question is will we make the cut for the actual report set to air next week some time on HBO? Let's write in to HBO and Bryant Gumbel and beg they put us on the air. How about that?
BTW, the picture of the HBO crew taping the Insite was shot by KPRC live truck engineer Anne Perkins. Way to catch me off guard Anne!

USHER'S WIFE SERIOUSLY ILL AFTER LIPO!

THE DANGERS OF COSMETIC PROCEDURES!

Usher's wife reportedly suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest during a liposuction operation.

Tameka Foster was due to undergo the cosmetic surgery at Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday but fell seriously ill when she was being anesthetised for the procedure. She was then induced into a coma for 24 hours, and is now said to be recovering.

A spokesman for the hospital refused to comment on the allegations published by Brazilian news website G1, saying: "The family has demanded total privacy. The hospital is barred from giving any information."

It has been claimed US neurosurgeon Gabriel Hunt, who works at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, flew to Sao Paulo to help treat Tameka over the weekend.

He left on Monday but refused to comment.

Usher cancelled concerts in the US and rushed to his wife's side as soon as she fell ill.

His spokeswoman Simone Smalls has not released details on Tameka's illness, only saying: "Tameka is in stable condition. Her husband is with her at the hospital. The family requests privacy at this difficult time."

Simone confirmed Tameka is at Sirio-Libanes Hospital - considered the top medical centre in Brazil - adding she had been admitted after suffering "complications from routine surgery".

INSITE CELEBRITY SIGHTING: ART RASCON!

RIHANNA: THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME CHRIS HAS ATTACKED ME!

A HISTORY OF LOVE AND VIOLENCE?

Chris Brown may have gotten lucky because the charge he was booked on is kinda weak, law enforcement sources tell TMZ. But he's still in big trouble, and Rihanna says it's not the first time he's attacked her.

Sources say the Los Angeles County District Attorney kicked the case back to the police for further investigation because evidence that he made criminal threats against Rihanna is kind of thin. Our sources are quick to say he will, however, almost certainly be charged with felony domestic battery, a lesser offense but still serious.

Here's how it went down, according to the police report. After Chris received a text message from a woman who wrote about getting together, an argument erupted. By the way, initially, Rihanna would not tell cops what started the argument.

She did, however, tell them that during the argument, he started hitting her. According to the police report, she ordered him to drive her home and "faked a call" to someone, saying things like, "He's dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there."

Rihanna told cops the fake call enraged Brown. He said something to the effect of "You are really fu**ed up now. I'm going to kill you." This statement is the basis of the criminal threats charge.

At that point, according to the report, Brown allegedly began a violent attack with his fists. At some point, Rihanna took the keys out of the ignition and threw them outside.

And there's this. According to the police report, she told cops this was not the first time Brown hit her. She referred to it as an ongoing and escalating abusive relationship.

We're told the criminal threats charge is based on that one statement Brown allegedly made. As one law enforcement source told us, "It's kinda weak, and the D.A. is not going to prosecute a high profile case like this unless it's solid." That's why it was kicked back for further investigation.

Given the brutal nature of the attack, which the photos clearly show -- contusions on the face, swollen eyes, cut lip, bloody nose, bite marks on fingers and arm -- a felony domestic battery charge is virtually a done deal. That, however, is a less serious offense than making criminal threats.

AMERICANS GIVING PRESIDENT OBAMA HIGH RATINGS ON HANDLING THE ECONOMIC CRISIS!

REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS GET LOW RATINGS FROM THE PEOPLE: HAVE THEY LOST TOUCH?

The support for the US President remains strong, with Barack Obama enjoying an approval rating of 67 percent among Americans for the way in which he has handled the government's effort to pass an economic stimulus bill, the latest Gallup poll has said

The Democrats and Republicans in the Congress, on the other hand, receive much lower approval ratings of 48 percent and 31 percent respectively, results of the poll released by Gallup has revealed. The polls are based on nationwide interviews conducted by Gallup between February 6-7.

In a statement, Gallup Poll said the survey underscore the degree to which Obama appears to be maintaining the upper hand over his opponents from a public opinion perspective as he and congressional leaders wrangle over the precise form and substance of a new economic stimulus plan.

Obama is scheduled to address his first press conference today in an attempt to reach out to Americans directly and seek their support for his mega stimulus package. The Gallup Poll said Obama's overall job approval rating remains strong at 64 percent.

IS MAYOR WHITE AND THE CHIEF MUNICIPAL JUDGE GETTING A FREE PASS ON FOUL UPS?

THE CITY'S COURT SYSTEM CRASHES AND NO ONE IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE!

Houston Politico Marc Campos poses a very interesting question this week in his daily commentary. He wants to know why heads haven't rolled after the so called "Muni Virus." That's the computer bug or glitch that has shut down the city's Municipal court system computer. The city is losing millions of dollars with the doors of the courthouse shut on Lubbock. Here's a segment of Campos' commentary:

I guess the City of H-Town forgot to budget for the McAfee updates this past year. How else do you explain the Citys Municipal Court System getting hit by a virus? Somebody needs to get their arse run out pretty soon if you ask me.

Can you imagine how folks would have reacted if the municipal courts computers would have crashed under Lee P. Browns watch. Heck, he would have had to hang out in one of those undisclosed locations for a few days, errr weeks.

What do you think? Is Mayor Bill White getting a free pass and should Chief Judge Bert Majia be held accountable as well?

GOOD NEWS: JEREMY DESEL RETURNS TO TELEVISION!

WE'RE GLAD EVERYTHING WORKED OUT AND HE'S OKAY!

KHOU (Channel 11) reporter Jeremy Desel returns to the air tonight with a story about the future of NASA and the Johnson Space Center — vital stuff, no doubt, but hardly the taut, personal, dramatic sort of tale that has characterized his decade on Houston television.

Desel’s mere presence on the air tonight, though, is sufficiently dramatic in its own right.

At age 39, he is two months removed from open heart surgery to repair a defect that could have struck him down in the middle of the newsroom or, for that matter, in the middle of Galveston Island during Hurricane Ike.

“I look back now and see things that should have been red flags, things that I wrote off at the time to the fact that I had a baby at home,” he said. “What this has taught me is to listen to my body and to see my doctor at least once a year.”

Desel’s off-screen tale began with the sort of coincidence that normally highlights health-related stories on TV newscasts. A few weeks removed from back-to-back stints on hurricanes Gustav and Ike, he scheduled a doctor’s visit in November in search of antibiotics for a sore throat.

“The doc put the stethoscope on me and said, ‘How long have you had that wicked murmur?’” Desel said. “I said, ‘What?’ I think it’s fair to say that I wasn’t expecting any personal drama.”

His physician referred him to a cardiologist who diagnosed a defective mitral valve, which had produced a condition known as mitral regurgitation, in which blood flows back into the chamber after the heart muscle attempts to push it forward.

The heart muscle expanded and thickened to keep pace with the increased workload, and by the time Desel was being prepped for surgery, he said he could see his chest expand and contract to match the rhythm of his overworked heart.

He underwent successful surgery Dec. 8 at Methodist Hospital’s DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, but his recovery was complicated for a time by a series of transient ischemic attacks, or mini-strokes, as his body coped with the aftermath of the procedure.

He was released from the hospital six weeks ago, he said, with a series of general instructions on how to progress in his recovery.

“They told me I should avoid high-stress environments,” he said, laughing. “So I walked back into the newsroom (10 days ago). But I’m easing into the deadline pressure as I see what I can do and what my comfort level is.”

One of the first things he did was to examine some of the stories he filmed before he was diagnosed to see if he could pick up any signs of his compromised physical condition.

One of the clearest signs, he said, came from a trip during Ike to the 16th floor of the San Luis Hotel, site of Channel 11’s storm bureau.

“I’ve always been a relatively in-shape guy,” he said. “But I got stopped dead in my tracks after four flights of stairs by shortness of breath. That should have been the absolute red flag, but I wrote it off to the baby, getting no sleep and being on the road for two hurricanes.

“Now, I can watch my live shots during Ike and hear the shortness of breath. And so can others I’ve shown (the stories).”

That group presumably includes Channel 11 news director Keith Connors, who understandably was shaken by Desel’s subsequent diagnosis.

“He’s a big, burly, strapping guy, and it’s hard to think of him as being vulnerable,” Connors said. “… He did incredible work in Galveston. He was working 12, 20, 24 hours and never backed down from any of it.”

Desel, a veteran of the Chicago Marathon, is limited to walking these days but is pleased with the pace of his recovery. He’s happy to be working, and Connors is glad to have him back.

“We were very worried that he wasn’t going to make it through, much less make it back on the air,” Connors said. “But we’re happy he’s on the mend and hope to have him back on the air and breaking stories for us.

“His is a cautionary tale to be sure that you take your health serious. It could have been a tragedy and not the triumph we’re talking about today.”

IS SHEILA JACKSON LEE MOVING TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT?

WHO SHOULD REPLACE HER IN THE CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT?

Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) will leave her post in Congress to work in the U.S. State Department under Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, sources tell Capitol Annex.

Jackson Lee was among Clinton’s most prominent African American supporters until the final days of her presidential campaign, in spite of the fact that her Congressional District overwhelmingly supported Barack Oabama. Jackson Lee made no apologies for her support of Clinton, although it could have caused her difficulties in the Democratic Primary next year.

Jackson Lee has held her seat in Congress since winning it in 1994, when she defeated Congressman Craig Washington in the Democratic Primary. A former Houston City Councilmember and municipal judge, Jackson Lee is one of Texas’ most outspoken Congressional leaders on issues of foreign policy, including the genocide in Darfur.

Speculation on who will replace Jackson Lee is already beginning. Leading the pack among likely contenders is State Sen. Rodney Ellis (D-Houston). Former Houston City Councilwoman Ada Edwards is also a likely contender for the post. There is some speculation that former Texas House Speaker Pro Tem Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) will seek the seat now that he is essentially exiled within the House Chamber. Turner seeking the seat, however, seems unlikely.

State Reps. Garnet F. Coleman and Dwayne Bohac are unlikely to seek Jackson Lee’s post, although parts of their districts lie within the boundaries of the Congressional District. Bohac, as a Republican, would be immediately slaughtered at the ballot box. Coleman, on the other hand, is sorely needed and wields far more power and influence in the Texas House right now.

A special election will likely be called for the seat by Texas Governor Rick Perry sometime after Jackson Lee’s resignation is official.

RAW PRESS CONFERENCE: NAACP BECOMES WATCHDOG TO BELLAIRE POLICE DEPARTMENT!

SUPPORTING QUANELL X!

IT'S TIME TO COME UP WITH A STRATEGY!

The Insite hears members of the activist community are coming together Wednesday for a private strategy session to help and support one of their own. That person is Quanell X. You may remember just last week Quanell was hit with a lawsuit by one of the Houston police officers originally accused of beating Marvin Driver. Those officers sued X and Driver claiming defamation of character. The next move is for Quanell X to make. Part of the strategy I hear is for this brainstorming session to decide the next step for the activist community in dealing with this lawsuit. It's my understanding this meeting will not be open to the public or the news media. Stay tuned to see what comes out of it and the next move of Quanell X. I'm sure he won't disappoint us!

DO YOU SUPPORT PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN - VOTE ON THE LEFT OF THE BLOG!

AND LEAVE YOUR REASONS WHY IN THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW!

For the second straight day and less than a day after his first presidential news conference, President Barack Obama has traveled the United States, trying to build public support for his economic stimulus proposal. This time, he spoke and took questions from a crowd in Fort Myers, Florida - a city with the nation's highest rate of home loan foreclosures.

"We know that in order to address our economic crisis, we are going to have to help homeowners, not just banks, but the homeowners as well," he said.

President Obama said he will unveil an overall housing strategy in the next few weeks. But he's already looking at ways to help homeowners avoid foreclosure.

As the president spoke in Florida, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the economic stimulus plan. The legislation will go to a committee which will work out differences with the recovery plan that passed the House of Representatives in January. The resulting bill will go to the president for his signature.

"We have had a good debate. That is part of what democracy is all about," he said. "But the time for talk is over. Folks here in Fort Myers and across America - they need help; they need action and they need it now."

Mr. Obama was introduced in Fort Myers by Charlie Crist, the popular Governor of Florida, who is one of few nationally-known Republican politicians to endorse the president's economic recovery plan.

"This is not about partisan politics; this is about rising above that, helping America and reigniting our economy," he said.

On Monday, the president addressed a community meeting in Elkhart, Indiana, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. Later in the week, he will visit a factory in Peoria, Illinois, where workers are facing job cuts.

THE NAACP HOUSTON OFFICE FLOODED WITH CALLS FROM COPS!

WHERE DID THE MYSTERY PAGE COME FROM?

It's a mystery officials with the Houston office of the NAACP still can't figure out. Around 11:30 am Tuesday morning the phones at the NAACP office on Wheeler Avenue began ringing off the hook. Every time a worker would answer the phone the response would be: "This is Officer XXXXX did you page me?" Somehow the number to the NAACP office went out in a mass page to some officers with the Houston Police Department. The officers weren't sure why they were paged and NAACP President Carol Mims Galloway says she had no idea why they were being called. Galloway and workers at the office say for at least a half an hour they received dozens of calls from Houston police officers. No one was able to figure out what happened. Anyone out there got any idea why some many Houston cops received a page from the NAACP office in Houston?

HAVE YOU READ THE COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD TODAY?

THE LATEST NEWS AT HILL'S GROCERY STORE!

I caught this picture in Anahuac Monday. It's Torrey 'T-Dub' Walker reading the community bulletin board at Hill's Grocery store. The announcements weren't too terribly exciting. There's a couple of missing pets, dinners being sold for a fundraiser and lots of activities for senior citizens. I think T-Dub is interested in the new exciting bowling night in Anahuac. Are you going too?

BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO HELP WITH DOCTOR SHORTAGE!

WOULD YOU SUPPORT THIS PIECE OF LEGISLATION?

U.S. Representative Gene Green introduced H.R. 916, the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Training Act, and H.R. 914 the Physician Workforce Enhancement Act, with Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) in a bipartisan effort to address the growing physician shortage in the nation.

“Our public health system is already spread too thin and not enough trained professionals are available to cope with the growing demand,” said Rep. Green. “These bills are aimed at providing more resources to hospitals and to individuals wanting to be part of the public health system. ”

The Preventive Medicine and Public Health Training Act will provide $43 million in training grants through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to schools of public health, public health departments, medical schools, or hospitals to plan and develop residency programs in Preventive Medicine, to provide financial aid to residents (to pursue an MPH), or to defray costs associated with a residency training program.

“Every year fewer trained Preventative Medicine professionals are available to fill essential leadership roles at hospitals and clinics,” said Rep. Green. “They provide health screenings, promote disease prevention in at-risk populations, lead public health agencies, become epidemiologists or experts in occupational health. They are essential to maintaining a healthy general population.”

A second piece of legislation introduced with Representative Burgess, the Physician Workforce Enhancement Act, will assist small hospitals that serve rural or growing areas. The goal of this legislation is to provide hospitals with interest-free loans to establish a residency training program for certain high need medical specialties. Under the program, hospitals could receive up to $1 million over 4 years.

“The legislation we are introducing is targeted at the weakest spots of the medical workforce - specializations like family and emergency medicine for small and developing communities,” said Rep. Burgess.

THE INSITE AND JULIE 'THE SOCIALITE' GRAYUM WAY BACK IN 1996!

THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT ALMOST HAD A FIRST!

THE TRANSSEXUAL AT THE ACADEMY!

The Houston Police Department would've made history if a recruit wouldn't have been eliminated from the police academy just last month. The Insite has learned and confirmed with HPD brass the department had it's first transsexual recruit enter the police academy. That candidate was ruled out after part of the entry process. The Insite knows the specific reason but I'm not releasing that information in fear of identifying the recruit. But officials with HPD said they were going to give the recruit a fair chance at making it in the department. In fact, I called the department to do a story about it but was told they wanted to wait until the recruit was accepted and graduated. However, as a result of being released from the academy that story won't happen. This is as much as we're getting on the subject. Many of the officers the Insite spoke with had mixed feelings about the recruit. Some were accepting, others didn't care, while many use the "F" word describing the potential HPD cop. I guess we will never know. But that leads to a question: Should transsexuals or transvestites be allowed into the academy? I already know about the male cop turned female who was already on the force, but what about allowing them into the academy? The Insite would like to hear your opinion!

OFFICER WHO ALLEGEDLY REPORTED OFFICERS IS SHUNNED IN DEPARTMENT!

THE LATEST ON THE PRESIDENT OBAMA JOKE!

The Insite hears there's been some backlash for the officer in training who reported the alleged threatening jokes by some fellow Houston police officers. Those jokes reportedly targeted President Barack Obama. (See Original Post Below) That officer has allegedly been labeled a snitch in the Northeast Precinct where the incident took place according to my sources. In fact, I'm told some veteran officers have refused to work with the officer in training who blew the whistle. I've also learned the names of the officers who allegedly told the jokes but it won't do me any good. I'm told by a spokesman for HPD because the officers are not relieved of duty the department can't give me the status of the internal probe. The public information officer says it's part of due process.

Question: Should the HPD officer be shunned and labeled a snitch for their actions or commended for coming forward with the threatening jokes?

Original post:

The Insite hears at least two possibly four Houston police officers are facing an internal investigation for bad jokes. That's right jokes. Those officers are accused of making those jokes about President Barack Obama. Here's what the Insite hears: The officers were having lunch when one said they should hang then President Elect Barack Obama. The second officer allegedly said well since he's not President yet we should just shoot him. Then one of the officers said let's just gut him. Now you see why these officers are under investigation. An officer in triaining allegedly turned in the veteran cops who made the joke. The Insite has heard from several sources in the department who are angry the officers have not been taken off the streets while the probe is underway. One source says a public servant shouldn't be joking like this about the President. That person went on to say especially if that public servant is a police officer. Another source at the department is also upset the officers have not been taken off the streets during the probe. The Insite has not heard anything from HPD's top brass on this issue as of yet. What do you think about the HPD cops little joke time?

BRYANT GUMBEL WAS IN HOUSTON TO TELL TOLAN'S STORY!

REAL SPORTS FOCUSES ON THE CONTROVERSIAL BELLAIRE SHOOTING!

The Insite has learned HBO's Real Sports anchor Bryant Gumbel was in Houston last week. He was here to interview Robbie Tolan. Tolan is the 23 year old who was shot by a Bellaire police officer last December. The officer said he thought Tolan, a minor league baseball player, was in a stolen vehicle. That officer has been relieved of duty while an internal investigation is underway. Tolan's father, MLB former player Robert Tolan, says Gumbel interviewed the entire family. Scoop. Supposedly in the interview Tolan Jr. says he can no longer live in his parents home in Bellaire. He's been staying across town in an undisclosed location because he fears retaliation from the Bellaire police force. In the meantime, Gumbel's team attempted to interview city officials with Bellaire and all of them turned him down. Gumbel's report on Tolan is expected to air next week. Because of the committment to HBO the family won't be talking with any news media until after the story airs. The Tolan family as a result has scheduled a press conference at Windsor Village the day after the HBO report. Tolan's father says his son has lost 30 pounds since the shooting and will likely need trauma counseling because of the incident. In fact, Tolan Sr. says he and his wife will also get trauma counseling!

ELEANOR TINSLEY DIES!

HOUSTON LOSES A GREAT CITIZEN!

In a statement Tuesday, City of Houston Mayor Bill White confirmed that former councilwoman Eleanor Tinsley has died. She was 82 years old.

Tinsley last served as a councilwoman in 1995 during the mayoral administration of Bob Lanier. She was first elected to City Council in 1979 when she won an at-large position.

The Baylor University alum served on Council for 16 years, but had to leave office in 1995 because of term limitations.

Tinsley moved with her husband to Houston in 1953 from her birthplace of Dallas. Her first elected office position was as a Houston Independent School District board member from 1969 until 1973. During her time serving as an HISD board member, Tinsley helped put an end to segregated schools and form Houston Community College.

Eleanor Tinsley Park is part of Buffalo Bayou Park and has been the site of major Independence Day events for the last several years.

Mayor White released the following statement regarding Tinsley:

Houston has lost a great citizen with the passing of Eleanor Tinsley. She's a shining example of a life dedicated to making our community a better place for all its citizens. Just two weeks ago, she stood with us as we took down one of the last of thousands of unsightly billboards we've removed to make Houston neighborhoods more beautiful. It was the realization of a goal she helped set years ago and she proudly shared the moment with us. I admired Mrs. Tinsley's courage and commitment that day, and I will continue to admire the legacy she left for Houston. You can see that legacy with your own eyes in many places around Houston. Today, for example, hundreds of children all over the city will enjoy one of the many Spark Parks she championed. She was admired by so many and she will be missed.

OAK ISLAND SLOW TO RECOVER AFTER HURRICANE IKE!

REVA FOUNTAIN IS STILL TRYING TO REBUILD HER HOME!

In two days, a special committee will tell us just how well our area handled the storm we now know as hurricane Ike.

After months of meetings and public hearings the House Committee on Huricane Ike Recovery will be releasing their findings. The report is expected to address issues such as Houston's power grid.

The electrical system received lots of criticism after power failed in some parts of the city for weeks after Ike. The committee will also focus on Galveston and the damage sustained by UTMB.

You can also expect the local, state, and federal responses to get some mention in the report.

Reva Fountain is still cleaning up 5 months after Ike. She lives in a small community called Oak Island in Chambers County. Fountain says while she is satisfied with the local response to the storm her feelings are mixed when it comes to FEMA.

Fountain says the federal agency provides little assistance for those who have insurance. Her home was gutted by Ike but now she's trying to rebuild in Oak Island. The 35 year resident of the area says it also gets kind of lonely now. She lives on Oak Island Drive and many of her neighbors have moved back since the storm. Fountain says she longs for some company on the street and for her community to rebuild.

The House Committee report is expected to be released on Wednesday according to State Representative Sylvester Turner's office in Austin.

HPD COPS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR TASTELESS JOKES?

HPD COPS: LET'S HANG HIM, NO LET'S SHOOT HIM, WAIT LET'S GUT THE PRESIDENT!

UPDATE: HPD spokesperson John Cannon says because the officers have not been relieved of duty
he can not confirm or release any information on these allegations.

The Insite hears at least two possibly four Houston police officers are facing an internal investigation for bad jokes. That's right jokes. Those officers are accused of making those jokes about President Barack Obama. THE LATEST ON THE CHRIS BROWN / RIHANNA DRAMA!

AND HE DIDN'T EVEN WIN THE GRAMMYS HE WAS NOMINATED FOR!

The only Grammy Awards anxiety Chris Brown was supposed to feel was over whether he'd win one. Instead, the R&B singer remains mired in suspicion over an allegation of domestic violence.
Following Brown's arrest late Sunday night on suspicion of making a criminal threat and subsequent release, plenty of questions remained: Was there a physical attack, and if so, against whom was it committed? Los Angeles Police Sgt. Bridget Pickett said authorities
continued to investigate what took place early Sunday in the ritzy Hancock Park neighborhood shortly after Brown and longtime girlfriend, pop superstar Rihanna, were seen happily sitting together at the annual pre-Grammy party hosted by Clive Davis. Officers received a 911 call about an incident in which a woman accused Brown of hurting her. Authorities have not identified who that woman was, citing confidentiality for victims of domestic abuse. The 19-year-old Brown, who had left the scene before authorities arrived, turned himself in to police while the Grammy Awards were going on Sunday without him -- and also without Rihanna, who, like Brown, canceled her scheduled appearance. Brown was released after posting $50,000 bail. Pickett described the singer as "professional" during processing. Rihanna's publicist declined to say why the singer did not appear, saying only that she was "well" and expressing thanks for the concern. Brown's representatives also refused to discuss the allegations or his arrest. A phone message left with Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, was not immediately returned Sunday night. News of the incident broke as stars were showing up at the Grammys. Police said in an initial news release, sent 90 minutes before the show began, that the woman accusing Brown showed visible injuries. Still, Brown was not booked on suspicion of physically hurting the woman. Pickett said a criminal threats charge indicates a person makes a threat and has the capacity to carry it out. "There may be domestic violence charges added later, but that will be up to the district attorney's office," Pickett said. Less than an hour after the ceremony ended, Brown left a police substation with his attorney as numerous photographers tried to get a shot of him on the way out. Pickett said Brown did not appear to have any physical injuries. She said she did not know who placed the 911 call and a police spokeswoman said the department would not release the tape. Brown did not win in either category for which he was nominated: pop collaboration with vocals for "No Air" and male R&B vocal performance for "Take You Down."

BEN HALL PULLS OUT THE MAYORAL RACE!

HALL: I'M SUPPORTING GENE LOCKE NOW!

Houston power attorney Ben Hall is not running for Mayor after all. In a Monday morning press conference Hall announced he would endorse Gene Locke as Mayor of Houston. Both men are African American and would have likely cancelled each other out in the race when it comes to Black votes. Hall just last week was more than definite he was running for Mayor. The only black cloud over his head was the residency issue. There were questions as to whether Hall lived in the city of Houston long enough to run for Mayor. Apparently, Hall did an about face over the weekend and threw his support to Locke. Locke once served as Houston's city attorney!

LIL WAYNE GIVES A SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS PERFORMANCE!

HE ACKNOWLEDGES HIS HOMETOWN AND THE TRAGEDY KNOWN AS KATRINA!

The last thing I ever expected out of New Orleans bred rapper Lil Wayne was a socially conscious performance anywhere. But he shocked the Insite. The now multi Grammy winner brought attention to the hurricane and flood that ravaged his hometown we now know as Katrina. I'm shocked because when I interviewed him a couple of years ago he appeared to have total disdain for his hometown. He said the city was filled with haters. I also remember an interview where he refused to say he grew up in the city. He said he grew up all around the country because he was constantly on the road as a young performer. But on the ocassion when he had one of the largest audiences possible he changed his tune during the Grammys telecast Sunday night. His performance focused on the city the rest of the country watched drown 4 years ago. He even brought out flavors of New Orleans with a jazz pianist and a brass band. There were signs of a maturing artist not just a materialistic rapper. I never thought I'd say this but way to go Lil Wayne. Use your limelight for something positive!

COPS REPORTEDLY LOOKING FOR CHRIS BROWN AT THE GRAMMYS!

SOME CLAIM HE PUNCHED RIHANNA IN THE EYE AND IS NOW ON THE RUN!

First, Usher's wife has a plastic surgery emergency in BRAZIL and he misses his performance at Clive Davis' pre Grammy party. Clearly, he won't be at the Grammys either.

Now comes news from People that Chris Brown may have allegedly gotten into some kind of altercation involving a woman in a limo. Police are investigating.

Needless to say, Rihanna -- who along with Brown was scheduled to perform at the Grammys -- isn't going to show up and get asked all kinds of embarrassing questions about the woman in question and what she was purportedly doing with her sweetie after Clive's party.

Reports are that around 12:30 a.m., Brown and a woman were in a car in L.A. when an argument started. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out. According to the police, an argument escalated and the woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker.

Wow. Stay tuned for more news as the story develops...

REMEMBER THOSE JOBS THEY SAY MOST AMERICANS DIDN'T WANT?

A MCDONALD'S WHERE ALL THE EMPLOYEES ARE WHITE BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

I was at the local Walmart when I stopped by the McDonald's on Sunday. I was shocked at what I found at the fast food stop. Typically, this McDonald's and all the McDonald's in the Woodlands have been staffed by mainly Hispanics or individuals of Mexican decent. This particular McDoanld's which has been all Hispanic in the past was all White Sunday. That's right, all White people were working there. I can recall several news stories that indicated many non-Hispanic Americans except teenagers weren't pursuing jobs at companies that pay minimum wage or just above. The reports indicated many of the jobs which included fast food chains and the service industry were being held largely by the growing Hispanic population. So to see this was really a shocker. I wondered if it's an indicator of the bad economy and the recession the country is in. Have many of these White McDonald's employees been laid off from other higher paying jobs? It was just odd. I wanted to ask all of them if that was the case but I dare not. The two women who worked there appeared to be in their 40's while the two male employees looked to be in their 20's. Do you think we will see lots of White and Black Americans going back to these jobs they've traditionally balked at? This brings me to another question. What's going to happen to many of those Hispanic American workers who could be squeezed out as a result of this?

P.S. I hope this didn't come across as racist because it's not intended for that purpose. It was an observation and a real question I have. If anyone is offended by it please let me know and I will remove the post!

I'M NO BOB MARTIN BUT I CAN RIDE A BIKE!

INTRODUCING THE NEW INSITE-O-CYCLE!

It was about 6 months ago when I got a call from Dana 'NASA Lady' Davis. She asked if I wanted to go bike riding with her and some of her friends. I told her we all were too old to be out riding bikes and it was dumb idea. She said it was healthy and fun. I said so what? But actually I didn't have a bike. I should've just said that. In fact, I haven't owned a bike since middle school. Once you get a car the bike was history to me. But now history is repeating itself. I went to my favorite store, Walmart, and stumbled upon a bike they were virtually giving away. At the price I got it for it was a deal I could not pass up. After having the bike only two hours I've already spent 1 hour riding it through the neighborhood. Good thing there are a lot of bike trails. But I mistakenly took a golf cart trail for a bike trail and almost ended being hit in the head with a golf ball. I didn't know I could still ride that fast to get out of the way of that flying ball. I think golf will be my next sport. How about you?

P.S. They need to make big wheels and green machines for adults. I'd ride one!

NURSES OF THE WEEK: CASSANDRA JOHNSON AND CARL DANIEL!

THEY STABILIZED A SICK WOMAN AT THE BALL UNTIL THE AMBULANCE ARRIVED!

There was a brief break in the 2009 Southern University Mardi Gras Ball Saturday night when an attendee at the event actually passed out. The women fell from her chair to the floor and no one was quite sure what was wrong with her. That prompted two Southern University nursing school graduates into action. Cassandra Johnson, wife of NBA great Avery Johson and Insite correspondent Carl Daniel - both sprung into action. Johnson and Daniel comforted the woman who's family said she had been feeling bad since about 6 that evening. They stabilized her until the paramedics arrived and took her to a local hospital. Way to put those Southern University medical skills to use Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Daniel. For their actions they're officially the Insite's nurses of the week!
