PROTESTING THE POST OVER THE CHIMP CARTOON!

THE PEOPLE SPOKE AND THE NEWSPAPER RESPONDED BELOW IN SECOND INSITE POST!

About 400 people joined Al Sharpton and his National Social Action Network members to protest in front of the New York Post office in response to the alleged racist editorial cartoon that ran in the paper’s February 18 edition. The cartoon parodied a chimp that had been shot after attacking its owner, but it appeared to reference President Barack Obama as a dead monkey. “The Post is toast,” yelled several of the angry protesters who marched as NYPD surrounded their gathering. “Shut down the Post,” Rev. Al Sharpton chimed as he led the group in a march flanked by members of his National Social Network, the NAACP and Congressman Gregory Meeks from Queens. The first protest at noon made it difficult for New Yorkers at lunch that traveled down the Avenue of Americas. There was another protest at 5 pm.. Rev. Sharpton told the crowd that it was a travesty for the Post to get away with such a vicious editorial statement. One ironic image was the banner advertising CNN’s Black List was hanging in front of the Post!

DID THE NEW YORK POST JUST APOLOGIZE FROM THE COMIC STRIP MANY SAY WAS RACIST TOWARDS THE PRESIDENT?

IS IT AN "I'M SORRY" OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Here it is. You decide:

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

WAY TO GO DEBAKEY: LEADING THE NATION!

ARE YOU AS GOOD AS THESE STUDENTS ARE IN ADVANCED PLACEMENT CALCULUS?

HISD’s DeBakey High School for Health Professions leads the nation in the number of African-American students taking and passing Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus exams.

In the 5th Annual AP Report to the Nation, the College Board, which administers the AP program, announced that DeBakey High School had the highest number of African-American students who scored three or higher in AP Calculus AB course in the country. In fact, more than 93 percent of the students achieved a score of 3, 4, or 5. Five is the top score on the exam. The number of students at DeBakey scoring a three or higher in AP exams also increased 11% from last year.

“This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work put in by our students in response to the challenging curriculum and high expectations that we have set,” said DeBakey Math Teacher Anil Desai. “It is also a reflection of the effective collaboration among mathematics teachers in our school. We have a strong support from our school administration to pursue a rigorous and unique college-bound curriculum in this journey towards excellence.”

“We set goals of high achievement for all of our students at DeBakey,” said Principal Linda Lazenby. “Then we provide the extra support and encouragement they need to be successful.”

The State of Texas also exceeded the national average in the percentage of students who took at least one Advanced Placement exam during high school.

Information released this week by the College Board, found that 27.5 percent of Texas public school students in the Class of 2008 took at least one AP exam while in high school, compared to 25 percent for the nation.

Universities often award course credit to students who earn a score of 3, 4 or 5 on an AP test so a strong performance on these exams can save Texas students thousands of dollars in college tuition costs.

“Data shows that by taking these AP courses and exams, students are better prepared for college,” said HISD Director of Advanced Academics Tracye Wear. “We celebrate DeBakey’s AP scores of 3 and higher. In particular, we celebrate African-American students who took the AP exams last May; their scores of 3, 4 and 5 are up 93.3% from the previous year. It’s amazing work.”

THE SEC'S STATEMENT ON THE LOCATION OF ALLEN STANFORD!

THE FBI FOUND HIM IN VIRGINIA!

The Securities and Exchange Commission today made the following statement regarding its enforcement action against Robert Allen Stanford:

“At the request of the SEC, Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Richmond Division today located and identified Stanford Financial Group chairman Allen Stanford in the Fredericksburg, Va., area. The agents served Mr. Stanford with court orders and documents related to the SEC’s civil filing against him and three of his companies. The SEC very much appreciates the outstanding assistance of the FBI in this matter.”

The SEC on February 17 charged Robert Allen Stanford and three of his companies, alleging a fraudulent, multi-billion dollar investment scheme. Stanford’s companies include Antiguan-based Stanford International Bank (SIB), Houston-based broker-dealer and investment adviser Stanford Group Company (SGC), and investment adviser Stanford Capital Management. The SEC also charged SIB chief financial officer James Davis and Stanford Financial Group chief investment officer Laura Pendergest-Holt in the enforcement action.

The orders and documents that the FBI served on Stanford were the SEC’s complaint, the memorandum of law filed with the complaint, the court order freezing assets, and the court order appointing a receiver.

The Honorable Reed O’Connor, U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Texas, granted the SEC’s request for emergency relief for investors, and issued an order freezing assets and appointing a receiver over R. Allen Stanford and other defendants.

INSITE SOURCE: 15 YEAR OLD STUDENT SHOOTS AND KILLS MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY SEXUALLY ASSAULTED HIM!

ALLEGATIONS OF ABDUCTION AND RAPE HITS NORTHEAST HOUSTON!

FOX 26 News has learned a 15-year-old middle school student is being questioned in the murder of a Houston man. But those familiar with the case say the shooting did not come without justification.

Sources tell FOX the 15-year-old was walking to school Wednesday when he says he was abducted by a 51-year-old man. That man according to the student took him to his house only blocks away and sexually assaulted the child.

Somehow, the teen got his hands on a gun in the man's house and shot and killed him. The middle school student then told friends at school.

A rape kit was done at a local hospital which confirmed the sexual assault, according to our sources.

Norm Uhl with the Houston Independent School District says he's been made aware of the incident but referred us to the Houston Police Department. Detectives with HPD say they're investigating that shooting that took place in the 8600 block of Lockwood Wednesday afternoon.

They also say they have made contact with the juvenile but refused to make any public statements. Uhl says in cases like this, the district will offer the child counseling but he wasn't sure if that has happened as of yet.

This incident did not happen on school grounds but as the 15-year-old was walking to school Wednesday morning on the northeast side of town.

In the beginning HPD wasn't quite sure what had happened to the 51 year old. After a tip call the Insite started digging and put the details together with confirmations from various agencies. Here's the original press release the department initially put out Thursday morning:

FATAL SHOOTING AT LOCKWOOD

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at Lockwood about 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday (February 18).

The victim, XXXXXXXXXX, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.HPD Homicide Division Sergeant G. Gonzales and Officer J. Sosa reported:Mr. XXXXXX nephew arrived at the residence and called paramedics after he found his uncle shot. According to investigators, neighbors reported hearing gunshots early in the morning.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

GALLERY FURNITURE IS ABOUT TO GO UPSCALE!

WILL IT STILL HAVE DRAWING POWER IN THE GALLERIA?

The Insite spotted a store that seemed out of place in the Galleria area on Wednesday. It was a new location (the old will remain open on the north freeway) of Gallery Furniture. Apparently, Mattress Mac is moving into the high rent district. There were signs outside of the new building that read coming soon. I previously reported Mac had a display for his store in the Galleria Mall. Obviously, he's taking it a step further with a full store in the area. But how successful will it be? That's the question most successful businesses face once they leave their roots. Sometimes expansion can be a bad thing. Do you think Gallery Furniture will survive and have drawing power in the high rent district?

INSITE SALE OF THE WEEK!

IT WOULD BE THEIR PERFECT MATCHING OUTFITS FOR EASTER!

I managed to snap a picture of the sale of the week. Where else but in Greenspoint Mall can you find not one, two, but three suits for under $200. It's a deal you can't beat. So, I started to thinking and I try not to do that a lot because I can hurt myself. Anyway, I wanted the Insite readers to decide who would be the best local high profile male to wear these suits. Who do you think needs a clothing makeover and these threads would be perfect for them? Personally, I see Michael Berry in the red suit with a mini-me version for his son Michael T. What do you think? Who should be sporting the Insite sale of the week?

IS THE CARTOON IN THE NEW YORK POST MAKING FUN OF THE PRESIDENT?

YOU BE THE JUDGE AFTER SEEING THE DRAWING!

African Americans criticized a New York Post cartoon as racist Wednesday, saying it likened President Barack Obama to an ape -- a potent image in the history of racism toward blacks.

The cartoon, which the newspaper defended as a parody of Washington politics, depicts a police shooting of an ape, playing off the real shooting of a pet chimpanzeee in Connecticut this week. One of the police officers says, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

Because Obama promoted the $787 billion economic stimulus that he signed into law Tuesday, critics of the cartoon interpreted the dead chimp as a reference to Obama, who became the first black U.S. president on January 20.

"The cartoon in today's New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African Americans as being synonymous with monkeys," civil rights activist Al Sharpton said.

Calling the cartoon "offensive and divisive," he promised to stage a demonstration outside the Post offices Thursday.

New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie said he received numerous calls from outraged constituents.

"To run such a violent, racist cartoon is an insult to all New Yorkers. This was an unfortunate incident in which a human being was seriously injured, not an opportunity to sling dangerous rhetoric," Comrie said in a statement.

Police in Stamford, Connecticut, shot and killed a 200-pound (90-kg) chimpanzee Monday after the pet nearly killed its owner's friend and attacked a police car. The chimp, named Travis, had once starred in television commercials and was taking medication for Lyme disease.

New York Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said in a statement the cartoon was "a clear parody."

THE FEDS ARE NOW COMBING THE BOOKS OF STANFORD FINANCIAL WHILE INVESTORS ARE STILL LEFT HOLDING THE BAG!

THEY COULD BE RELATED!

WHO'S WHO OR AM I JUST SEEING THINGS?

I was watching an interview of baseball player Robbie Tolan (shot by Bellaire Police) when I lost track for a second. I actually thought I was looking at Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson. Is it me or do these two dudes look like they could be brothers. I'm just saying. Let me know if I'm seeing things. I asked one person and they said I was right. Am I? The Insite would like to hear your opinion!

THE TOP TEN THINGS SIR ALLEN STANFORD IS DOING WHILE IN HIDDING FROM THE US GOVERNMENT!

WHAT WOULD YOUR LIST HAVE ON IT?

I frequently wonder what people do when they're in big trouble and the feds are on their tails. Sir Robert Allen Stanford is one who recently came to mind. He's the billionaire from Houston who's accused of the $8 billion dollar fraud according to the SEC. Stanford is accused of selling certificates of deposit to his investors and federal investigators say those cd's may not be worth the market amount Stanford has claimed. Federal regulators have not been able to find the Texan since the big news broke on Tuesday and the lawsuit was filed accusing him of fraud. He has a home in the US Virgin Islands and banks in Antigua as well as Venezuela. My question is what is he doing or thinking right now?

10. Sitting on his balcony in the Virgin Islands sipping on Pena Coladas.
9. Wondering if Ted Oberg from KTRK will ever find his front door bell at his compound in Antigua.
8. Wondering why FOX Newschannel refers to him as mini-Madoff.
7. Counting the number of planes he still has to fly to Fantasy Island.
6. Considering negotiations with NASA to trade his unsold certificates of deposit for a one way ticket to Mars.
5. Pondering how cool it would be if he could be free to shop at the Galleria right now.
4. Sending text messages to the SEC saying, "you're getting warmer, now you're just plain cold."
3. Counting $20's and wondering if he should burn them to save on energy costs.
2. Pretending he's never heard of Stanford Financial Group and changing his name to Sir Allen Iverson.
1. Hiding under a sofa in the Fifth Ward praying Carol Mims Galloway doesn't find him first!

Can you come up with a better list? Leave your list in the comment section and I'll compile the best for another 'What is Sir Allen Stanford thinking and doing.'

SIR ALLEN STANFORD OF THE NOW TROUBLED STANFORD FINANCIAL SAYS IT'S FUN BEING A BILLIONAIRE!

PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS STIMULUS BILL!

FIRST ON THE LIST IS HELPING HOMEOWNERS!

Racing to reverse the country's economic spiral, President Barack Obama signed a mammoth stimulus package into law Tuesday and readied a $50 billion rescue plan for Wednesday announcement to help legions of homeowners who are facing foreclosure.

In Houston, one out of every three home sales is a foreclosure, according to figures from the Houston Association of Realtors.

One year ago, foreclosures accounted for one out of four home sales, said the HAR report.

The organization pegged the average price of a single-family home at $164,922, a 12.8 percent decrease.

But local real estate agents say there are some signs of recovery.

"We are seeing volume pick up on showings on our houses," said HAR's Margie Dorrance, "and you have to have that before you get the pendings and then the solds."

There was no recovery yet for beleaguered automakers, who were back in Washington for more bailout billions. General Motors Corp. said it was closing plants, Chrysler LLC said it was cutting vehicle models and both said they were getting rid of thousands more jobs as they made their restructuring cases for $5 billion more for Chrysler and as much as $16.6 billion more for GM. The United Auto Workers union said it had agreed to tentative concessions that could help Detroit's struggling Big Three.

Anything but reassured, Wall Street dove ever lower. The Dow Jones industrials fell 297.81 points, closing less than a point above their lowest level in five and a half years.

Obama focused on the $787 billion stimulus plan, an ambitious package of federal spending and tax cuts designed to revive the economy and save millions of jobs. Most wage-earners will soon see the first paycheck evidence of tax breaks that will total $400 for individuals and $800 for couples.

The stimulus package was a huge victory for Obama less than one month into his presidency. But he struck a sober tone and lowered expectations for an immediate turnaround in the severe recession that is well into its second year.

"None of this will be easy," he said. "The road to recovery will not be straight. We will make progress, and there may be some slippage along the way."

Still, he declared, "We have begun the essential work of keeping the American dream alive in our time."

Underscoring energy-related investments in the new law, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden flew separately to Denver where the president signed it at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science before roughly 250 people including alternative energy business leaders. Earlier, the pair examined solar panels on the museum's roof.

On Wednesday, Obama will outline another big piece of his recovery effort -- a $50 billion plan to help stem foreclosures -- in Arizona, one of the states hardest hit by the mortgage defaults that are at the center of the nation's economic woes.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner mentioned the housing program last week as he rolled out a wide-ranging financial-sector rescue plan that could send $2 trillion coursing through the financial system. Obama is expected to detail how the administration plans to prod the mortgage industry to do more in modifying the terms of home loans so borrowers have lower monthly payments.

More than 2.3 million homeowners coast-to-coast faced foreclosure proceedings last year, an 81 percent increase from 2007. Analysts say that number could soar as high as 10 million in the coming years, depending on the severity of the recession.

In Denver, Obama said the stimulus package had received broad support in Washington and elsewhere, though Democrats pushed it to passage with only three Republican votes in the Senate and none in the House.

One of the biggest public spending programs since World War II, the new law is designed to create jobs in the short term and to boost consumer confidence to battle the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. It also makes down payments on Obama's health care, energy and education goals.

HE BEHEADS HIS WIFE!

POLICE SAY THERE WERE LOTS OF DOMESTIC CALLS!

The founder of an Islamic television station in upstate New York aimed at countering Muslim stereotypes has confessed to beheading his wife, authorities said.

Muzzammil Hassan was charged with second-degree murder after police found the decapitated body of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, at the Bridges TV station in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, said Andrew Benz, Orchard Park's police chief.

Hassan was arrested Thursday.

His wife filed for divorce January 6, and police had responded to several domestic violence calls at the couple's home, Benz said.

Hassan went directly to the police station after his wife's death and confessed to killing her, Benz told CNN. Benz declined to give further details.

Attempts to reach an attorney for Hassan were unsuccessful, and his family didn't return calls from CNN.

He had two children, 4 and 6, with his wife. He had two other children, 17 and 18, from his previous marriage.

I HAD NIGHTMARES CHRIS BROWN BEAT ME UP!

HE WAS EVERYWHERE IN HER BEDROOM!

I had a family emergency in Louisiana this weekend and so I had to go to Baton Rouge. I stayed at my sister's house. While there I was given my nieces room who ended up on the sofa. As it should be for the uncle. Anyway, as I prepare to go to sleep I look up and see Chris Brown everywhere. On the door, on the wall, on the ceiling, on the tv stand...this guy's pictures are everywhere in my niece's room. I told her about the awful allegations (Rihanna beat down) and she said it didn't matter to her because he just hasn't found the right one yet. I assume she's the right one. I just hope she has a boxer's mask to protect her. By the time I went to sleep I thought I was going to have nightmares about Chris Brown punching me in the eye and biting me on the arm. Just a day in the life of the Insite!

IS THE SECRET SERVICE NOW INVOLVED IN THE TASTELESS JOKE?

THE LATEST ON THE INVESTIGATION NO ONE AT HPD CAN TALK ABOUT!

The Insite hears the US Secret Service has interviewed the Houston Police officer who allegedly turned in their fellow officers for making a joke about President Barack Obama. I also hear HPD is now requiring the officer who made the allegation to take a lie detector test. I can't get it confirmed from the public information officer with the department because as I've said before the officers are not relieved of duty so they can't address the issue.

Original post:

The Insite hears at least two possibly four Houston police officers are facing an internal investigation for bad jokes. That's right jokes. Those officers are accused of making those jokes about President Barack Obama. Here's what the Insite hears: The officers were having lunch when one said they should hang then President Elect Barack Obama. The second officer allegedly said well since he's not President yet we should just shoot him. Then one of the officers said let's just gut him. Now you see why these officers are under investigation. An officer in triaining allegedly turned in the veteran cops who made the joke. The Insite has heard from several sources in the department who are angry the officers have not been taken off the streets while the probe is underway. One source says a public servant shouldn't be joking like this about the President. That person went on to say especially if that public servant is a police officer. Another source at the department is also upset the officers have not been taken off the streets during the probe. The Insite has not heard anything from HPD's top brass on this issue as of yet. What do you think about the HPD cops little joke time?

THE PARTY KING VISITS STUDIO 1 LIVE!

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS CLUB?

By: Kalele 'Party King' Thumbutu - The Party King was out and about on Friday night and found out that a brand new club has opened up in the heart of downtown Houston! Each and every Friday STUDIO 1 LIVE @ ONE (713 Main) will be brought to you by A Few Good Men! This brand new redecorated, renovated, and rejuvenated club will definitely add extra spice and flavor to Friday nights here in Houston! Yeeeeeee!!!!!

THAT'S ONE RED SUIT!

WOULD YOU EVER WEAR IT IF IT WEREN'T THE HOLIDAYS?

I was channel surfing on Sunday night when something on KPRC caught my attention. It was a sports program and on that show the channel 2 anchor was interviewing the Rockets great Calvin Murphy. A real Houston legend but the fire engine red suit he was wearing was super loud. Initially, I thought it was a late airing Christmas report. But it wasn't. Boy, that suit was loud. I'm not sure if I could pull it off but it worked for Murphy. The question: Would you wear a suit that red and it's not the holiday season? The Insite would like to hear your opinion!

ROBBIE TOLAN GOES NATIONAL TUESDAY NIGHT!

THE PREVIEW PICS FROM THE HBO COMMERCIAL!

As the Insite first reported last week Bryant Gumbel was in Houston shooting a report on the shooting of Robbie Tolan. He was the minor league baseball player shot by a Bellaire Police officer. That report on HBO's Real Sports will air Tuesday night at 9pm. But make sure you record that and watch FOX 26 news at 9pm. But it appears Gumbel gets the family including Tolan's mother to really open up in the piece. The program will air on HBO and I'm sure the city of Bellaire won't walk away unbruised from this one!

I'M A REDNECK AND I'M GOING TO LEAVE THIS COUNTRY!

I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN WITH CHRISTIAN VALUES: BUT I'M NOT READY FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT!

A guy with a beer bottle in his hand said he was just not ready for a Black President. Then he went on to say if he had his way women wouldn't vote. Another man said he's voting for the White man. As he turned to get into his log carrying semi he said, "I ain't voting for no nigger." That was the picture of the right wing and Republican party painted by the HBO special Right America: Feeling Wronged. It aired Monday night. It was an eye opening and scary picture of America. It was of mainly Whites feeling victimized and afraid as it appeared then Senator Barack Obama was going to be President. The Republicans in this documentary said Obama reminded them of the anti-Christ, Hitler, and Osama Bin Ladden. There were lots of Conservatives who said they were going to leave the country if Obama wins. The film was produced and directed by Alexandria Pelosi. She's the daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. At one point in interviewing a man who said Obama was the anti-Christ she says she believed people were going to say she picked the craziest people for her documentary. She then said the man she interviewed looked like an everyday American. He did except the "666" comment he made. If you get a chance to view this documentary make sure you check it out. It deals with the McCain - Palin campaign, the so called liberal media, and the parts of America some may not be so proud of after viewing this documentary!

SUGE KNIGHT BEAT UP AGAIN?

HE MAY HAVE TO HIRE A PRIVATE BODYGUARD NOW THAT PEOPLE KNOW HE CAN BE BEAT!

A beating has left rap producer Marion 'Suge' Knight hospitalized in Arizona. Police say it happened early Monday at a private party in a hotel in Scottsdale. Two men were arrested including a man who said he is the business manager for hip-hop singer Akon. Scottsdale police spokesman Sgt. Mark Clark says Akon was not present when the scuffle occurred. Clark says officers arrived and saw a man identified as 38-year-old Robert Carnes Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa., twice punch Knight in the face. Police booked Carnes and a man identified as 33-year-old Thomas Leon Anderson Jr., of California, on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct.
