COUNCILMAN MIKE SULLIVAN CONFRONTS ALLEGED GAMBLING OPERATION!

HOUSTON COMMUNITY READY FOR THE CRIMINALS TO GET OUT!

A MOST WANTED IN CONROE CAPTURED!

WILLIAM TOWNSEND IS NOW BEHIND BARS!

By: Jamie Nash

One of the county’s most notorious fugitives is back in the Montgomery County Jail after he was arrested by Mexican authorities and released to US law enforcement.

The Texas Rangers intervened on behalf of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and negotiated the transfer of 34-year-old William David Townsend, Jr. from Mexico to the U.S., according to Captain Bruce Zenor of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

In May, 2007, a long-term investigation by the MCSO Special Investigations Unit led to Townsend’s arrest. At the time, the SIU suspected Townsend was involved in a multi-state drug-trafficking operation, a murder and illegal dog and rooster fighting. The Willis resident was arrested while allegedly purchasing 5 kilograms of cocaine in South Montgomery County.

Townsend was charged with aggravated possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), which is an unusual charge that applies only to drugs weighing over 400 grams; second-degree felony illegal investment; state jail felony money laundering; two counts of first-degree felony delivery of a controlled substance and second-degree felony delivery of a controlled substance.

Tabitha Townsend, William’s wife, was subsequently arrested at their residence where SIU Lt. Philip Cash said the couple and several other suspects were trafficking large quantities of prescription pills and large amounts of cocaine. Liberty County law enforcement had also investigated William Townsend’s possible involvement in the death of Thomas Weigner, Jr., a man well-known in the criminal world of dog fighting. Weigner was murdered during a 2006 home invasion, when he was tied up and shot in the leg then allowed to bleed to death. At the time, authorities were investigating a possible link between Townsend, Weigner, and former NFL star Michael Vick.

When arrested by the SIU, Townsend was in possession of $78,000 in cash and over $4,000 more was found in his home, where investigators also seized 12 firearms, surveillance equipment, illegal and prescription drugs including methamphetamine and Xanax. Several of the guns were loaded and easily accessible. One had a high powered scope. ATF agents were called to the scene to remove a fragmentation grenade, which was stored in an ice chest on the front porch.

Montgomery County Animal Control seized numerous fighting roosters and Pit Bulls from Townsend’s residence.

Investigators reported the discovery of evidence Townsend shipped illegal drugs to New York, Tennessee and Pennsylvania, and that money was shipped back to Texas, in addition to links to East Coast street gangs and drug dealers in Montgomery and surrounding counties.

In November of 2008, Townsend was released on nearly $300,000 bond with the help of three co-signers. On January 11, 2008, he failed to appear at a scheduled court hearing and 4A Bail Bonds realized Townsend was gone. Despite offering a $10,000 reward, the bonding company was unable to locate Townsend. The closest they came to the truth was probably when they reportedly heard rumors Townsend fled to Mexico, which is where he was ultimately found.

From 2006 to present, agencies involved in investigating Townsend included the MCSO, FBI (Beaumont office), Liberty County Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division, the Texas Rangers, Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft Division, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Conroe DPS Narcotics Division and the Montgomery County SWAT team.

Zenor said he received a call around 9 a.m. on Wednesday saying Townsend was back in Texas. By 2 p.m. the MCSO SWAT Alpha Team was en route to Laredo where they arrived late that night. At 6 a.m. on Thursday, they took custody of Townsend at the Webb County Jail and headed back to Conroe. At 12:47 p.m., Townsend was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on six warrants for felony bond forfeiture.

I LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL: YES PAPI, CAN WE KEEP ME!

HERE'S WHY I CAN'T GET A GOOD STORY FROM COUNCILMAN JARVIS JOHNSON - HE HAS HIS OWN BLOG NOW!

LOOK WHO'S REPORTING THE NEWS NOW!

I was wondering why the well was running dry for the Insite at Councilman Jarvis Johnson's office. I've just learned he has his own blog where he actually reports on many of the issues affecting his district. It's a good looking blog that I will now add to my favorites. But a warning to the Council member, a lawyer should never represent himself and a doctor should never perform his own surgery. That means a City Councilman should never report his own news, so please leave that to The Insite. I'll accept your news tips Mr. Johnson if you apologize for starting your own blog. All jokes aside, good job sir!

YES PAPI, CAN WE KEEP ME?

DO YOU LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL OR WHAT?

I don't even remember what it's advertising but I love the pinata commercial. Whenever it comes on I stop what I'm doing and listen to it. I think they've done at least three now and every time the pinata talks I listen and then laugh. It's hilarious!

MINUTE MAID PARK COULD LOSE ONE OF ITS LIQUOR LICENSES!

FORMER ARAMARK MANAGER ACCUSED OF HITTING AND KILLING A STATE WORKER!

FOX 26 NEWS HAS LEARNED THE TEXAS ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE COMMISSION MAY BE GOING AFTER AT LEAST ONE OF THE LIQUOR LICENSES AT MINUTE MAID PARK...THIS COMES ALMOST A YEAR AFTER AN ARAMARK MANAGER WAS INVOLVED IN A DRUNK DRIVING CRASH THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A HOUSTON MAN. ARAMARK IS THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE VENDOR FOR MINUTE MAID PARK. IN THAT AUGUST 2008 CRASH A STATE WORKER WAS ALLEGEDLY HIT AND KILLED BY THAT ARAMARK MANAGER WHO HAD JUST LEFT THE AB ASTROS GAME. THAT ARAMARK MANAGER IS IDENTIFIED AS 70 YEAR OLD MAN. SOURCES CLOSE TO THE INVESTIGATION TELL FOX 26 NEWS TABC MAY ATTEMPT TO FILE A CIVIL CASE TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE OF THE ALCOHOL LICENCES PULLED AT THE BALL PARK. SGT. MIKE BURNETT WITH TABC WOULD NOT COMMENT ON CAMERA. HOWEVER, HE DID SAY THERE IS AN ADMINISTRATIVE CASE AGAINST THE VENDOR ARAMARK AND THE BALL PARK. THE SUSPECT IN THIS CASE HAS BEEN BEHIND BARS AT THE HARRIS COUNTY JAIL SINCE THE CRASH LAST YEAR. HE'S SET TO GO ON TRIAL NEXT MONTH FOR MANSLAUGHTER. THE VICTIM'S FATHER SAYS HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE LIQUOR LICENSE AT THE STADIUM PULLED. HE SAYS NOT ONLY THE DRIVER BUT THOSE WHO SELL THE DRINKS ARE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE. WE CALLED MANAGEMENT AT THE ASTROS FOR COMMENT AND THEY REFERRED US TO ARAMARK. OFFICIALS WITH ARAMARK SAY THEY'RE JUST BEGINNING TO LOOK INTO THE ISSUE AND WHEN THEY HAVE MORE INFORMATION THEY WILL RELEASE A RESPONSE. MAKE SURE YOU TUNE INTO FOX 26 NEWS AT 5PM FOR ALL THE DETAILS.

Aramark's response to this issue:

We take the responsible service of alcoholic beverages very seriously and have industry-leading standards in place at each venue where we provide food and beverage services. We do not comment on pending matters.

I GUESS RIGHTWING EXTREMIST REALLY DO EXIST!

I WONDER IF SHE WANTS TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO?

It was back in April when Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano got a public thrashing from Conservatives for a memo out of her agency that indicated we should be prepared. Prepared for rightwing extremist right here in America. I'm sure she's not saying she told us so but she should be saying she told us so. In the last four weeks we've witnessed the extremists the department was talking about. First on that list is Scott Roeder. He's the extremist who shot and killed Dr. George Tiller. Roeder was upset that Tiller performed late term abortions. And today we met James Von Brunn. The man who walked into the Holocaust Museum in Wahsington D.C. killing an African American security guard. Brunn is a self confessed racist who's written several pieces about the denial of the Holocaust. I wonder if many of the Conservative talk show hosts and talking heads will say the memo out of Napolitano's office was right. What do you think? Was the memo right and do the Conservatives owe her an apology for recognizing what lurks in our great country?

I FINALLY CAUGHT ONE OF THOSE HD TESTS!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE BIG SWITCH!

I work in television and haven't actually seen one until Wednesday night. It's the HD test that run on most major television networks. I was watching Larry King on CNN at about 11:35 pm when the color bars came up. I wasn't sure if it was the emergency broadcasting system or something else. But I realized it was one of those HD tests I've been waiting to see. Alas, I was disappointed because it wasn't that exciting. There were no bands or the little pinata guy from the tv commercial I love. But at least I've finally seen it. Have you seen one of the HD test and are you ready for the big switch?

CHIEF HAROLD HURTT SPEAKS OUT ON THE OVERTIME BUDGET CUTS IN HIS DEPARTMENT!

HURTT: WE'RE BEING FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE TO THE TAXPAYERS!

Every department in the city has been asked to exercise fiscal responsibility. Since 94% of HPD's budget is tied to personnel, that is where most of the cuts to the 2010 budget had to be made, including a reduction in overtime. As a result, HPD will rely on the expertise of its officers, technology such as our Crime Center, and our partnerships with other agencies to make certain the people of Houston remain safe.

TAKE YOUR SHOWER AT HOME OR SOMEWHERE ELSE NOT AT CITY HA;LL!

$5,000 FOR THE AMENITY ONE COUNCIL MEMBERS SAYS IS A WASTE OF TAXPAYERS DOLLARS!

To shower or not to shower...that's the question at Houston's City Hall. The Insite has learned there is a battle brewing in the halls of city government. On one side city council staffers who want a shower built and installed at City Hall. On the other side is Councilman Mike Sullivan. He says paying $5,000 to have the city install a shower anywhere in the city is a waste of taxpayers money.

Why a shower? There are some city workers who ride their bikes to work. They say when they get to City Hall they're all sweaty. The answer to that problem is installing a shower. How seriously are city leaders taking this request? Very seriously.

I had a chance to speak with Issa Dadoush by phone on Wednesday. He is the head of General Services Department at the city. He says he thinks the shower is a good idea. He says he's exploring places for the amenity to go. However, Dadoush has ruled out City Hall or the annex. He says they're looking at other city sites to place the shower. He admits $5,000 for a shower is a lot of money but he says it will ultimately help the environment. Dadoush says with city employees riding their bikes to work it would cut down on pollution.

Sullivan, who drives to work everyday, says he's checked many of the council employees at City Hall and there isn't a tremendous demand for a shower. He says except for Council member Jolonda Jones' office. Jones has gone on the record before indicating an interest in a city shower.
What do you think? Should there be a shower provided to city employees who ride their bikes to work? The Insite wants to hear your opinion!

HERE COMES THE COMPETITION RONALD GREEN!

MJ SAYS HE SHOULD GET THE JOB AS CITY WATCHDOG!

Dear Friend,

It's official, I am formally announcing my candidacy for City Controller of Houston.

As the City of Houston faces challenging economic times, it is vital to have a taxpayer's advocate to serve as City Controller. The citizens of Houston deserve a City Controller who is dedicated to making sure our tax dollars are spent wisely. The citizens of Houston deserve a dedicated civil servant, who knows how to run government like a business. Moreover, we need a City Controller who has the necessary professional knowledge and experience to understand the intricacies of city financial management.

For the past six years, I have been honored to serve the citizens of Houston as their City Council Member for District F. I have worked tirelessly to streamline city spending and championed for fiscal responsibility. Now it is time to take my knowledge and message of responsible fiscal management to the next level by running for City Controller of Houston.

While serving on City Council, I have diligently advocated for fiscal responsibility. I proposed the requirement that all city departments must submit a zero-based budget; fought for reductions in the property tax rate; sought an incremental increase in Capital Improvements Projects (CIP) from a 5 year rolling cycle to a 7-10 year rolling cycle; requested each city department to establish a balanced scorecard system to align its business activities and to measure its performance against strategic goals; and requested each city department to establish a 5 year operational planning process and a 2 year budget. I have also proposed that each city department should establish a base budget that can be adjusted up or down by 2.5% depending on the state of our economy. In addition, I have sought the requirement that unfunded retirees' health benefit liabilities should be reported, which currently is a $3.23 billion liability.

In 2007, I was honored to be a recipient of an Outstanding American by Choice Award presented by the USCIS and the U.S. Department of State. My professional background complements my work on the City Council. I have an MBA from Rice University and have successfully managed my own real-estate firm.

I encourage you to visit my website,
www.mjkhan.com, to learn more about me and my campaign. You can help in getting me elected by telling others about my campaign as well as considering becoming involved by giving me your endorsement, hosting a coffee session, making a donation, or requesting a yard sign and bumper sticker.

It is my hope that you join my campaign, so that together, we can bring fiscal responsibility to build a stronger future for the City of Houston and its citizens.

Regards,

M.J. Khan; P.E., MBA

HPOU UNION PRESIDENT GARY BLANKENSHIP SAYS THERE COULD BE A CRIME WAVE IN HOUSTON IF...

WILL CRIME BECOME A MAJOR PROBLEM IN HOUSTON?

A LETTER FROM THE HOUSTON POLICE OFFICERS' UNION PRESIDENT!

Houston Police Officers' Union
1600 State Street
Houston, Texas 77007
832.200.3400

TO: Houston City Council

FROM: Gary Blankinship, HPOU President

REF: Compensation cuts for HPD police cadets and HPD Overtime in the 2010 Proposed Budget

DATE: June 8, 2009

Following our review of proposed the 2010 annual city of Houston budget relating to three specific cuts in the Houston Police Department portion of the budget, we wanted to seek your collective help to fix what we believe are significant public safety cuts that will negatively affect police officer recruitment and police response.

The proposed budget cuts HPD's overtime budget dramatically. The $14-plus million cut will undermine the department's ability to properly function in its mission to protect citizens and businesses in our community. Furthermore, it will place police officers in the dangerous position of being forced to respond to emergency calls without proper backup or support.

The impact of the $14-plus million cut is the equivalent of losing 155 officers from the department for the fiscal year 2010. While we are aware that Chief Harold Hurtt and the Department's Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Joe Fenninger, have outlined the positive growth in our classified staffing strength over the past three budget cycles of 479 officers, we are still far short of the identified staffing strength the police chief outlined to council in 2005.

Four years ago the administration of the police department identified that HPD staffing needed to be in excess of 6,000 classified officers. We would submit that in the past four years, increased demands for emergency police services in combination with Houston's population growth has arguably caused the 6,000 classified number of officers identified in 2005 to be deficient today.

The demands for professional police services from our department have not diminished and our ability to do the best job we can to police our city has been heavily dependent on budgeted overtime money. Cutting HPD's overtime budget is not only penny wise and pound foolish, it's extremely ill-advised and it will truly compromise the quality of service we currently provide.

In addition to the damage caused by cutting HPD overtime, the proposed $12,000.00 hiring bonus cut is also detrimental to the HPD applicant process. The administration apparently feels that there is no longer a need to compete for the finest quality applicants that we can hire and train to be HPD officers. The new proposed program now is to cut the pay of cadets from a pro-rated annual pay of $43,260.00 to $31,260.00.

It's our opinion that drastically reducing the compensation package which is the initial incentive for a qualified applicant to choose HPD over other competing law enforcement agencies is a very bad idea. Our department needs to be doing all it can to attract and retain the very best men and woman to HPD.

Compromising entry level pay and cutting overtime, which will also cut HPD service to the community, is the absolute wrong direction for our city leaders to take.

Finally, the proposed cuts to the number of budgeted police classes is unacceptable. Thanks to your and the Mayor's efforts, our department has been chipping away at the tremendous classified staffing shortage our department and the citizens have been burdened with for far too long. As mentioned earlier in this document over the past year we have been able to grow our classified strength by 479 police officers over the past three fiscal years. That said, we are still woefully understaffed and police officers in Houston are continually being put in dangerous situations with little or no back-up to help them.

Therefore, the notion of drastically cutting academy classes is the equivalent of HPD crying uncle and practically giving up. This horribly ill-advised plan was authorized by then Mayor Kathryn Whitmire and city council due to budget concerns back in FY 87. It was a terrible idea then and it resulted in the unintended facilitation of a crime wave that hit Houston and sparked tremendous outrage from the citizens who were shocked that public safety in Houston was compromised by the council.

Cutting HPD growth today is a huge mistake and HPD officers, as well as the citizens who rely on us to help them, will be the victims of the proposed cut if it is adopted.

It is our hope that in the budget process wisdom will prevail and the harmful cuts in the department's budget will be overridden by a conscientious council who supports the department and its officers.

In closing, with the economic downturn the World is currently experiencing, we understand the need for close budget scrutiny, however, public safety in Houston should not be compromised in any manner. We think the citizens of Houston would agree.

A SHOOTING AT THE US HOLOCAUST MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON DC!

WHAT WAS HIS MOTIVE?

The man who's been identified as the shooter at the US Holocaust Museum. Police say he appears to have acted alone. Here's more about the suspect from his website:

James W. von Brunn holds a BachSci Journalism degree from a mid-Western university where he was president of SAE and played varsity football. During WWII he served as PT-Boat captain, Lt. USNR, receiving a Commendation and four battle stars. For twenty years he was an advertising executive and film-producer in New York City. He is a member of Mensa, the high-IQ society. In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal. He served 6.5 years in federal prison. (Read about von Brunn's "Federal Reserve Caper" HERE.) He is now an artist and author and lives on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

His website is: http://www.holywesternempire.org

More news on the shooting:

At least two people were shot Wednesday at the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, authorities said.

D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said a person walked into the museum at
about 1 p.m. with a rifle and shot a guard. Hughes says the shooter was also
shot.

Hughes said the victims¹ conditions were not known. Both were being rushed
to a hospital.

U.S. Park Police gave slightly different information, saying three people
had been shot. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN a third person
was hurt after being cut by broken glass.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned
both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal
detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument,
is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each
year.

Roads surrounding the museum have been closed.

UNION PRESIDENT: MAYOR'S BUDGET CUT AT HPD COULD LEAD TO CRIME WAVE IN HOUSTON!

CAN WE AFFORD TO CUT OUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE?

Officials from the Houston Police Officers Union say that the city will see a sharp increase in crime as a result of millions of dollars in proposed cuts to the Houston Police Department budget.

FOX 26 News and the Insite have learned that the union is furious that HPD faces losing $14 million allocated for the 2010 fiscal year. Money that could've been used for overtime for police officers.

Union president Gary Blankenship says the impact will be equivalent to losing 155 officers from the Department.

Also on the fiscal chopping block are the $12,000 per person hiring bonuses used by HPD to recruit new officers.

Blankenship says if the proposed budgetary cuts are approved, the Houston area could see a "crime wave."

"Cutting HPD growth today is a huge mistake and HPD officers, as well as the citizens who rely on us to help them, will be the victims of the proposed cut if it is adopted."

Mayor Bill White denies that proposed cuts in the Houston police budget amount to approximately $14 million, but says he cannot provide a specific amount.

YOU MAY FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GET TO WORK ON 288 THIS MORNING!

WERE YOU CAUGHT IN THIS MESS THIS MORNING AND DID IT MAKE YOU LATE FOR WORK?

Traffic along State Highway 288, the South Freeway, is forced to move onto the grassy median to bypass a section of the road where investigators are trying to determine how an 18-wheeler truck turned over onto its side and crushed two cars.

SkyFOX captured aerial images of the accident, which took place Wednesday morning along the South Freeway northbound near the Holly Hall Street exit.

The drivers injured in the accident were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One driver, whose car remained crushed beneath the cargo truck during the much of the accident investigation, was found conscious and alert on the South Freeway median. The driver apparently avoided more serious injury since the passenger side of that car, which was not occupied, retained most of the damage.

Firefighters were forced to remove the roof off the other car damaged in the accident but did find the female driver conscious.

The FOX 26 Traffic Center recommends that drivers accustomed to traveling on the South Freeway use Almeda Road as an alternate route to avoid further traffic delays.

I GUESS HAROLD HURTT WON'T BE VOTING FOR ANNISE PARKER!

PARKER: HURTT IS INEFFECTIVE AS POLICE CHIEF!

I don't always believe everything I read so I had to make the call myself. I wanted to know if the rumors were true. Some have said Mayoral candidate Annise Parker (City Controller) would fire HPD Police Chief Harold Hurtt if elected. Parker has reportedly said publicly that Hurtt is ineffective. Tuesday night I placed a call to Parker's press person Jeri Brooks. As usual Brooks got back to me as soon as she could. She issued this quote from Parker: "I have said on multiple occasions that I believe that we need good leadership in the police department. I know the police chief is already looking for a new job but in any case I would expect to replace him if elected Mayor." So it is true. Hurtt is definitely out of there if Parker is elected. One thing is certain with this revelation, I know Hurtt won't be voting for Parker!

THE INSITE HAS A NEW TELEVISION AT HEADQUARTERS!

EVERYTHING IS NOW CRYSTAL CLEAR AND BIGGER!

After enduring a 26 inch television in my room for about a year I figured it was time to upgrade. So, initially I upgraded to a 40 inch television. It was just way too big for the bedroom. I ended up back at Best Buy and purchased a 32 inch Insignia LCD television. What did I do that for? After only one night there were ghost images burned on the screen. I immediately took that one back the next day. I finally settled on what I purchased but took back nearly two years ago. I bought the LG. Life's Good right? It's my television of choice so I settled on a 37 inch. It's big for a bedroom but what's life if you can't see yourself on the nightly news in 37 inches. Let's see if I can avoid the headaches I had with LG a few years back. Welcome the new edition to Insite headquarters!

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES GETS POOR RATING!

WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS HAVE YOU HAD WITH THIS HOUSTON COMPANY?

Flights on U.S. airlines were on time more frequently in April than the month before and improved from a year earlier, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Hawaiian Airlines had the best on-time performance, while Comair -- a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines Inc. -- had the worst. Among legacy carriers.

Northwest Airlines -- operated by Atlanta-based Delta -- was on-time the most.

And Houston-based company Continental Airlines Inc. posted the worst on-time performance.

Legacy carriers are those airlines that had a large presence in a number of regions before the industry was deregulated in 1978.

The airlines reporting had a combined average on-time rate of 79.1 percent, compared with 78.4 percent in March. Last April the on-time arrival rate was 77.7 percent.

Weather problems were involved in a little less than half of the delays in April -- a slight decline from March. Other delays came from congestion, airport operations, maintenance and crew issues.

There are fewer planes in the sky this year, as many carriers have scaled back their flights to meet lower passenger demand.

Reports of mishandled baggage declined in April from March, and were lower than in April 2008 as well.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE SHERIFF LATELY?

MISSING IN ACTION - AT LEAST IN MY BOOK!

Maybe it's just me but I haven't seen the newly elected Sheriff Adrian Garcia but once since he took office. Is it that Michael Jackson recluse thing he's trying to pull off or what? Before he was elected he could be found everywhere pressing the flesh and kissing babies. But he's been as invisible as well, Sheriff Tommy Thomas who was no where to be found while in office. And I'm not sure if his staff is headed down the right track as well. I put in a call to Keir Murray (spokesperson) today for an interview with the Sheriff about the new Department of Justice report on the jail. But I have yet to hear back from Murray. Is he playing the reclusive role as well? The promises of access and transparency from the new Sheriff is starting to fall short at least in the book of the Insite. Where have you seen the Sheriff lately?

THE WINNERS OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS!

ZAMORA, SELLERS AND DUNCAN GET THEIR HONORS!

The Houston Police Department is proud to announce that the State of Texas will honor three HPD officers who will receive the 2008 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement awards, along with 17 other law enforcement officers from across the state in a ceremony in Austin, Texas on June 11.

Senior Police Officer Christopher D. Duncan, sworn in as an officer in December 1992, is assigned to the Homicide Division/Crime Scene Unit and has developed into a highly skilled and widely respected investigator. In 2000, Officer Duncan received Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) certification in providing training in areas of crime scene photography, DNA evidence handling, and forensic anthropology, with presentations at law enforcement seminars at the regional and national level. In 2001, Officer Duncan achieved certification in forensic photography by the International Associate for Identification and in 2003, he graduated from the National Forensic Academy at the University of Tennessee, and has authored articles in several forensic journal publications.

Officer Christopher M. Zamora, sworn in as an officer in July 2006, is assigned to the Central Patrol Division as a night-shift patrol officer. In 2007, Officer Zamora, as a one-man-unit, captured 41 felony suspects, many of whom were armed, in possession of narcotics, stolen vehicles, and other stolen property from robberies. As a two-man- unit, along with his partner, Officer Zamora netted 57 felony arrests. Officer Zamora’s devotion to duty in decreasing crime, as well as his quick response to citizens’ calls, reflects his public service to the City of Houston.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, Officer Sellers conducted welfare checks at numerous apartment complexes with his partner. On September 17, 2008, while talking to an apartment complex manager, Officer Sellers heard a child’s screams for help. As he responded, Officer Sellers saw a male suspect grab a young boy with one hand and in the other he held a sawed-off shotgun. After an unsuccessful attempt to get the boy to safety, Officer Sellers, in fear of his life and that of the child, drew his duty weapon, fired several times and struck the suspect. The suspect, who had the shotgun pointed at the boy’s head, let go of the child and dropped to his knees. As Officer Seller’s partner got the boy to safety, Officer Sellers gave repeated commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, which the suspect ignored. Officer Sellers again discharged his duty weapon and fatally wounded the armed suspect. It was later determined the suspect was a known narcotics user and had threatened neighborhood children for some time. Officer Sellers’ courageous actions saved the life of the child and made the neighborhood safer.

The ceremony honoring these three Houston police officers will take place on Thursday, June 11, 1100 Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, State Capitol Building, Extension Auditorium, Room E-1.004. There will be a reception following the ceremony.

GIVING THE GIFT OF LIFE TO A BROTHER IN BLUE!

WILL YOU SUPPORT THIS HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER?

Dozens of Houston police officers lined up Monday to give the gift of life. They were donating blood to Senior Police Officer Lloyd Morrison. He was hit not once but twice last month by two suspected drunk drivers. We're told his legs and one of his arms were broken. As a result of the extensive surgeries Morrison needed blood donated. The Life truck showed up and the officers showed out. The goal was at least 40 donors but while I was there the number surpassed that and hours of giving were extended. There will also be a fundraiser for Morrison in July which includes a barbecue plate sale and the raffling of an AR-15. Get your tickets!

DID YOU KNOW DRUNK DRIVERS ARE ATTRACTED TO FLASHING POLICE LIGHTS?

IS MILITARY CONTRACT SPENDING OUT OF CONTROL?

ONE WATCHDOG AGENCY SUGGESTS THERE ARE A LOT OF PROBLEMS!

An independent commission has found that the Defense Department failed to provide adequate oversight over tens of billions of dollars in contracts to support military operations
in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The report to Congress comes from the Wartime Contacting Commission, which was directed to investigate waste and fraud in wartime spending.

The bipartisan commission found that U.S. reliance on private sector employees has grown to "unprecedented proportions." But it also found that the government has no central database of who all these contractors are, what they do or how much they're paid.

The commission cites concerns with a massive support contract known as "LOGCAP" that provides troops with essential services, including housing, meals, mail delivery and laundry.

Houston-based KBR Inc. is the primary LOGCAP contractor in Iraq and has been paid nearly $32 billion since 2001. The commission says billions of dollars of that was wasted due to poorly defined work orders, inadequate oversight and contractor inefficiencies.

In one example, defense auditors challenged KBR after it billed the government for $100 million in costs for private security even though the contract prohibited the use of for-hire guards.

KBR has defended its performance and criticized the commission for making "biased" statements against the company.

PARKER: $5 CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CITY!

ROOM FOR ANYONE TO GIVE!

Today, the Annise Parker Campaign for Mayor launched its “I Can Make a Difference” campaign, inviting Houstonians to get involved by making a contribution of $5.

“I believe it’s the smallest contribution that can make the biggest difference,” said Parker.

Parker launched the campaign simultaneously on Facebook, Twitter, AnniseParker.com and through an email that said:

“Five dollars says you have a stake in your community. It says you’ll fight to make your neighborhood safer and you won’t let a slowing economy slow down Houston.”

Parker said she came up with the program to give more Houstonians a voice in their future:

“Sure, I want to win my campaign for mayor – but most of all, I want Houston to come out on the other side of this economic downturn with a bright future. That will take the participation of all of us – and that’s why I’m launching this effort.”

“Traditionally, it has not been cost-effective for big campaigns to reach out to donors in the $5, $10 or even $25 range,” said Parker’s campaign manger Adam Harris. “But Annise was firm that this campaign would make room for everyone to participate – and that we would honor every contribution. That’s the genesis of this effort.”

Harris acknowledged that the campaign was taking a page out of the Obama playbook: “The 2008 presidential campaign forever changed the way candidates organize supporters and communicate with voters. Candidates who ignore these changes do so at their peril,” said Harris.

Parker has made the use of the Internet a hallmark of her campaign for mayor. With 5,072 supporters on Facebook and 875 followers on Twitter (as of press time), Parker’s online presence is more than four times that of her opponents combined.

FORMER HOUSTON STUDENT WAS ABOARD AIR FRANCE JET!

THE RECOVERY EFFORT CONTINUES!

A former British School of Houston student was aboard the Air France jet that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean, a school official said.

Alexander Bjoroy was returning to boarding school from a holiday break to visit his family in Rio de Janeiro, Heather Holmes, communications coordinator British School of Houston, said in a letter to parents of the students at the school.

Bjoroy and his sister attended the school from 2003 to 2005 but later moved to Bogota, then Singapore before settling in Rio in December, Holmes said.

The Paris-bound jet carrying 228 disappeared after leaving Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night. Investigators believe weather conditions may caused the crash. Officials said no one in the plane survived.

Two other former Houston-area residents also were aboard the plane.

Michael Harris, who turned 60 last month, worked in Rio de Janeiro for Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Corp. A company spokesman says Harris planned to attend seminars in Barcelona, Spain. After that, he and his wife, Anne, a physical therapist, were going to spend five days in Paris.

The couple own a home in The Woodlands area, where Anne's adult son currently resides.

Meanwhile, the British School of Houston has scheduled a special assembly at the school at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for a couple of teachers and classmates who knew Bjoroy.

CHAMILLIONAIRE SAYS HE'S NOT RETIRING!

CHAMILLIONAIRE: I GUESS I MAY HAVE GIVEN SOME THE WRONG IMPRESSION!

Several days ago, I did a live broadcast from my site, Chamillionaire.com, to let fans know where I am right now and what my intentions are musically for the future. Instead of clearing things up, the broadcast unintentionally spawned rumors of my retirement from music. Since then, I have been bombarded with emails and phone calls regarding my so-called retirement and the reasons behind me not dropping the promised "Venom" album.

It was definitely not my intention to mislead anyone into thinking that I plan to completely retire from music. I love making music and will continue to do so. What I am retiring is the "Mixtape Messiah" part of my career. This means no more jacking beats and no more underground mixtapes. I have been making and putting them out for over a decade and I feel like it is time to step to another level. The upcoming installment of the "Mixtape Messiah" series, "Mixtape Messiah 7", will be the final one. Moving forward, a large majority of the music I release will be on original beats.

Additionally, even though I don't plan on releasing any of the original material that I had wanted to call "Venom", I will definitely be releasing a third Chamillionaire album with Universal. I am confident that my true fans will have plenty of fresh, new music to be as excited about as I am and I look forward to supplying their demand for new music.

I hope that my fans will understand that over time, you grow as a person and this means you will evolve as an artist. The experiences that you encounter throughout your life all contribute to those changes and that is bound to affect the music an artist feels like making at any given time. I love that my fans feel so deeply about the work I have done in the mixtape scene or the "Get Ya Mind Correct" era of my career, but at this time I want to focus 100% of my studio time on perfecting the commercial music I will release in the future.

Thanks for understanding.

Chamillionaire

THE SCARED TURTLE CROSSING THE STREET!

IT MADE WATER EVERY TIME I TRIED TO HELP IT!

While I was in Louisiana this weekend I ran across a turtle trying to cross the street. He was almost done, so I wanted to give him or her a helping hand by pushing it to the sidewalk. What suprised me was the turtle was so frightened by me it began peeing. As one person put it they didn't know turtles pee when they are afraid. I thought maybe it was some water it held in its shell. But when I pushed it again the water came out again as the slow moving critter started to run away from me. I didn't want to give the thing bladder problems so I left it alone. Did you know turtles made water when they're frightened? The Insite wants to hear your insite!

THAT DIET COKE STILL DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT!

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BEFORE?

Someone I know was eating this. It is a hot sausage po-boy and Krispy Kreme donuts. The brand of donut lets you know it wasn't in Texas. But they were eating lite so they threw in the diet Coke. When will people learn. If you eat a half million calories a diet Coke won't redeem you. You've just saved about 130 calories while picking up another 500,000. This is the Insite picture of the day. Have you seen someone order that Big Mac, Whopper, Hot Apple Pie, and threw in that diet Coke? What do you think? The Insite would like to hear your opinion!
