A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER STANDING STRONG TOGETHER DESPITE THE ODDS!
My name is Angus Smith and my daughter Tierney Smith was diagnosed with acute lymphoblasic leukemia (a.l.l.) April 24, 2002 when she was 10 years old. This is a fast growing cancer of the white blood cells. For the next 26 months she underwent chemotherapy treatment at the Children's Hospital of Austin,Tx. There were times where Tierney became very tired and physically weak from her treatments. Inspite of this, she never let this get the best of her she fought through the treatments the whole 26 months. Tierney never complained about anything even when she lost her hair. Tierney continued to remain emotionally strong and kept a smile on her face.
Tierney was also chosen to appear in the Lance Armstrong Nike commercial along with other cancer survivors. Tierney is also featured in the Livestrong Survivorship Center in Austin. This program has also opened her eyes of some late effects from her treatments. Tierney works out daily at 24 hour fitness and attends most of the many classes offered such as salsa dancing, zumba class, hip hop dancing and turbo kickboxing. Tierney have made new friends through a teen cancer support program and continues to encourage those whom have gone through what she had.
Tierney never let this illness stop her from her studies, even though there were days where she was unable to attend school. During that time she was in home school and kept up her studies. With that said "PRAISE GOD" Tierney was able to graduate on time from Round Rock High School June 3rd 2009. Tierney also will be attending Austin Community College in the fall session to begin her studies and become a Pediatric Nurse and help other children whom had the same cancer as she did.
I am so proud of my daughter because there were times I was not strong and she was there to keep me strong.
Most importantly without faith in God, we would not have made it to this point in our life. I am so grateful and as I tell Tierney each day.God sent us both through this for a reason and she must share it with others that all things are possible if you believe.
Note: The Insite went to high school with Tierney's mother Angus. I am so proud of my classmate and her daughter who defeated the odds. Way to go ladies!
