THE CADET HAS SINCE RESIGNED FROM THE FORCE!

FOX 26 News has learned a cadet at the Houston Fire Department resigned after he found himself the subject of an internal investigation regarding racial slurs.

The department confirms the cadet is the target of an internal investigation.

That cadet according to our sources allegedly said he wanted to work in a White community and at a mainly White staffed fire department.

A source tells FOX 26 the cadet also claimed he didn't want to work in a Hispanic neighborhood because he didn't want to learn Spanish.

Assistant chief jack williams confirms the probe. However, he did not release the name of the cadet.

THE INSITE BREAKS A STORY IN BATON ROUGE BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T CARE IN HOUSTON!

THE DIRECTOR AND FOUR OF HER STAFFERS AT THE IBERVILLE BUILDING HIT WITH SWINE FLU!

I was sitting on a hot tip Wednesday and I couldn't do anything with it in Houston. The tip: Five people in the Department of Social Services in Louisiana at the Iberville building were stricken with the swine flu. I got the tip from a friend in Baton Rouge. Instead of just sitting on it I made some calls. Two hours later it was headline news on at least two of the television stations in my hometown. What made this tip even more intriguing was the 5 people with confirmed cases of swine flu included the head of the Department of Social Services in Louisiana Kristy Nichols. The stations did their research and found file video of Nichols coughing profusely at a legislative committee meeting only a few weeks ago. Ironically, someone on the tape joked and said they were sure it wasn't swine flu. I got thank you calls from former colleagues in the River City after they had a chance to break the small outbreak. That leads me to this point. If you have a hot tip in Houston make sure you send it my way and I will get even more joy with breaking the story if it's right in our own backyard!

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF CORK RECYCLING?

DO YOU RECORK?

I've heard of bottle recycling, plastic recycling, and even computer recycling but never cork recycling. Apparently, some Houston area liquor stores are on a campaign to recycle corks from wine bottles. In fact, one store in The Woodlands will donate 2 cents for every cork turned in by its customers. That money will be used for cancer research and care. The store I encountered has plans to match the 2 cents for every cork turned in. I wasn't quite sure what a recycled cork would be used for but the clerk had the answer. He said the corks are mainly used for running and racing tracks at various schools and college campuses. I guess they could also be used to, well, make more corks. Will you donate your corks for a worthy cause?

PICTURE OF THE DAY: WHAT IS SHE GOING TO DO WITH THE SCISSORS?

REGINA WOOLFOLK DROPS BY THE INSITE!

It's a scary thought for a man to see a woman standing with a very intense look on her face and a pair of scissors...at least a pair that big. But all jokes aside, you're looking at HPD's Deputy Director of Communications Regina Woolfolk. She is holding the ceremonial scissors for the ribbon cutting at HPD's new Property Room. I thought it was a cool picture and discreetly aimed and got the shot. It was the same day Regina told the Insite I was always incognito but I'm always there. By the way, Woolfolk's staff has nothing but wonderful things to say about her and I believe them. Hey Regina, thanks for stopping by the Insite. And put those big scissors away, please!

HPD'S NEW CROWN JEWEL!

COULD THE PROPERTY ROOM BE A PART OF WHITE AND HURTT'S LEGACY IN HOUSTON?

Mayor Bill White and Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt were all smiles Thursday morning. The men unveiled what could be part of their legacy after both of them disappear from their leadership roles in the future. It was the brand spanking new state of the art HPD Property Room. The $13 million dollar project replaces the old building that was built in 1903. According to city officials HPD's previous property room was plagued with problems from leaking roofs to missing evidence. HPD leaders are hoping this new 50,000 square foot facility will erase the past. The property room now boasts a subzero freezer for evidence, automated shelves, a radio frequency tracking system and much more. Mayor White, Chief Hurtt, Council members James Rodriguez and Mike Sullivan were on hand for the ribbon cutting. Members of the media along with a list of VIP's were given a tour of the facility as Chief Hurtt logged in the first piece of evidence. Here are the pictures from the big event!

CONTINENTAL PILOT DIES WHILE FLYING PLANE!

NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE INCIDENT!

The pilot of a Continental Airlines flight from Brussels to Newark died over the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, but the jet landed safely with two co-pilots at the controls.

Flight 61 touched down on-time just before noon at Newark Liberty International Airport, authorities said. The Boeing 777 was carrying 247 passengers, said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based airline.

Passengers weren't told of the pilot's death in flight. During the flight, an announcement was made asking if any doctors were aboard and several passengers approached the cockpit.

The 61-year-old Newark-based pilot, with more than 20 years of service to the airline, is believed to have died of natural causes, Cripe said.

A relief pilot was on board during the flight and took the place of the deceased pilot, she said.
"The flight continued safely with two pilots at the controls," she said in a statement.

WHO TRAVELS WITH THIS MUCH MONEY?

SOMEONE GOING TO MEXICO!

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport intercepted nearly $180,000 in undeclared currency June 11.

Officers were screening travelers and luggage en route to Mexico when they noted anomalies in a suitcase. Upon further examination, they uncovered bundles of cash totaling $178,390 concealed between the lining and the plastic cover of the suitcase.

“We take every opportunity to disrupt the smuggling of sizeable amounts of undeclared currency,” said Jeffrey O. Baldwin Sr., director Houston Field Office, Customs and Border Protection.

Customs and Border Protection turned the seized currency over to its Fines, Penalties and Forfeiture division.

Since January, CBP officers at Bush airport have intercepted more than $1.4 million dollars in undeclared currency.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

ARE WE ON THE RIGHT TRACK TO HEALTH CARE REFORM?

Last year, millions of Americans came together for a great purpose.

Folks like you assembled a grassroots movement that shocked the political establishment and changed the course of our nation. When Washington insiders counted us out, we put it all on the line and changed our democracy from the bottom up. But that's not why we did it.

The pundits told us it was impossible -- that the donations working people could afford and the hours volunteers could give would never loosen the vise grip of big money and powerful special interests. We proved them wrong. But as important as that was, that's not why we did it.

Today, spiraling health care costs are pushing our families and businesses to the brink of ruin, while millions of Americans go without the care they desperately need. Fixing this broken system will be enormously difficult. But we can succeed. The chance to make fundamental change like this in people's daily lives -- that is why we did it.

The campaign to pass real health care reform in 2009 is the biggest test of our movement since the election. Once again, victory is far from certain. Our opposition will be fierce, and they have been down this road before. To prevail, we must once more build a coast-to-coast operation ready to knock on doors, deploy volunteers, get out the facts, and show the world how real change happens in America.

And just like before, I cannot do it without your support.

So I'm asking you to remember all that you gave over the last two years to get us here -- all the time, resources, and faith you invested as a down payment to earn us our place at this crossroads in history. All that you've done has led up to this -- and whether or not our country takes the next crucial step depends on what you do right now.

Please donate whatever you can afford to support the campaign for real health care reform in 2009.

It doesn't matter how much you can give, as long as you give what you can. Millions of families on the brink are counting on us to do just that. I know we can deliver.

Thank you, so much, for getting us this far. And thank you for standing up once again to take us the rest of the way.

Sincerely,

President Barack Obama

CRUEL AND UNUSAL PUNISHMENT: LOUISIANA STYLE!

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO THIS FATHER?

Lafayette police say a 30-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly forced his child to eat a whole crawfish, including its shell.

An affidavit from the incident alleges that Brandon Javon Arceneaux began to slap the child Sunday night when the child could not swallow the crawfish.

Cpl. Randal Leger would not release the age of the child or more information about the incident because the victim is a juvenile.

Arceneaux was booked with cruelty to juveniles. He was released from jail on a $2,500 bond.

IS IT A WASTE OF TIME SINCE HER POSITION IS ALREADY CLEAR?

JACKSON LEE IS HAVING A TOWN HALL MEETING!

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is holding a town hall meeting to address the Performance Rights act. It would allow artists whose music is played on radio to be compensated by the broadcast entity. Local radio stations in Houston came out swinging against Lee. Managers say they could be put out of business as a result of the legislation. This act comes at a time when radio stations like 97.9 The Box has laid off employees and slashed salaries because of the tough economy. But Jackson Lee wants her chance to explain why radio should pay to play. That will be done in a town hall meeting. But my question is why? She's already made it quite clear where she stands and she supports the measure to make radio stations pay the artists for playing their music. Do you think she needs to hold a town hall meeting to say why again? Here's the information sent to the Insite about the meeting and Jackson Lee's position once again:

This Town Hall meeting will address the concerns and bring clarity to the H.R. Bill 848 " Performance Rights Act"

-There will be a panel of several artist who are in support of such legislation and will bring clarity to the purpose of the Bill including: Big Daddy Kane, Paul Wall, the 4 Tops, Take 6, and a others.

-This Bill by all means isn't designed to shut-down black radio as its been rumored to do so.

This for all Performing Artist, Musicians, Music Experts, Elected Officials, and the General Public.

Please RSVP to attend this Town Hall meeting by calling the office at 713-655-0050 or call Bronson E. Woods direct at 713-751-1864.

Statement from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Washington, DC-

If we do nothing, we fail. We must be crusaders for justice. This is not a bill to close minority and women-owned businesses. Quite the contrary, this is a bill to help the people whose music makes us laugh, dance, sometimes sing and shout for joy because of the praise they provide us. For nearly one hundred years, the scales have been imbalanced. There was no justice for older artists and certainly no justice for today’s recording artists on the issue we are discussing today. It is my intent to work with everyone. Also, my support for this bill does not detract from my record on other legislation such as the bill getting rid of disparities between powder cocaine and crack cocaine sentencing, my work on financial literacy, and criminal justice reform, voting rights, and healthcare reform.
I co-sponsored H.R. 848, the "Performance Rights Act" because I believe in fairness, equity, and justice. I have great love and affection for my friends who own broadcasting companies because they are involved in this great radio industry. However, the law that permits our gospel artists, R & B, Hip Hop, jazz and other good musicians from getting just compensation has not been changed sine 1909. Only Iran, China and North Korea join the United States of America in preventing artists from being compensated. Therefore my vote was to equalize the rights of performers like the Four tops, the Temptations, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Martha Reeves, Harry Belafonte, Herbie Hancock, Archie Bell and the Drells, Kanye West, Beyonce and those lesser known and new artists such as your aspiring son or daughter trying to get in the music business.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON IS PUTTING ART BACK INTO THE CLASS SCHEDULE!

JUST IN TIME FOR THE SUMMER LOREN JACKSON RELAXES THE RULES!

LADIES CAN NOW WEAR CAPRI PANTS AT THE HARRIS COUNTY DISTRICT CLERK'S OFFICE!

The women over at the Harris County District Clerk's office are loving their boss right now. The Insite has learned newly elected clerk Loren Jackson has relaxed a rule that will make things a whole lot cooler during the dog days of summer in Houston. Jackson is allowing his female employees to wear capri pants to work during the summer months. There were already jeans allowed for casual Fridays but many of the employees were hoping to go a step further. During previous administrations at the department capri pants were not allowed. Jackson approved a change in the dress code policy at the county office that allows capri to be included on the business casual list. Claire Kennedy who serves as the communications specialist at the office confirms the change. She says, "a lot of us are really happy." Kennedy says a lot of capri come really dressy and in suits. She says it would maintain the professional look of the office while allowing the ladies to be cool during these 90 degree days. I'm sure the ladies are saying, "way to go Mr. Jackson."

AN INSPIRING STORY FROM THE SMITH FAMILY!

A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER STANDING STRONG TOGETHER DESPITE THE ODDS!

My name is Angus Smith and my daughter Tierney Smith was diagnosed with acute lymphoblasic leukemia (a.l.l.) April 24, 2002 when she was 10 years old. This is a fast growing cancer of the white blood cells. For the next 26 months she underwent chemotherapy treatment at the Children's Hospital of Austin,Tx. There were times where Tierney became very tired and physically weak from her treatments. Inspite of this, she never let this get the best of her she fought through the treatments the whole 26 months. Tierney never complained about anything even when she lost her hair. Tierney continued to remain emotionally strong and kept a smile on her face.

Tierney was also chosen to appear in the Lance Armstrong Nike commercial along with other cancer survivors. Tierney is also featured in the Livestrong Survivorship Center in Austin. This program has also opened her eyes of some late effects from her treatments. Tierney works out daily at 24 hour fitness and attends most of the many classes offered such as salsa dancing, zumba class, hip hop dancing and turbo kickboxing. Tierney have made new friends through a teen cancer support program and continues to encourage those whom have gone through what she had.

Tierney never let this illness stop her from her studies, even though there were days where she was unable to attend school. During that time she was in home school and kept up her studies. With that said "PRAISE GOD" Tierney was able to graduate on time from Round Rock High School June 3rd 2009. Tierney also will be attending Austin Community College in the fall session to begin her studies and become a Pediatric Nurse and help other children whom had the same cancer as she did.

I am so proud of my daughter because there were times I was not strong and she was there to keep me strong.

Most importantly without faith in God, we would not have made it to this point in our life. I am so grateful and as I tell Tierney each day.God sent us both through this for a reason and she must share it with others that all things are possible if you believe.

Note: The Insite went to high school with Tierney's mother Angus. I am so proud of my classmate and her daughter who defeated the odds. Way to go ladies!

TED POE IS PUSHING PREDATOR BILL!

NO GETTING OUT OF JAIL BEFORE TRIAL FOR CHILD PREDATORS: DO YOU AGREE?

When he was Judge Ted Poe, he developed a reputation for tough and creative sentencing. Even though he is now Congressman Ted Poe, some concepts have not changed.

Poe has intorduced a bill to crack down on child sexual predators. He unveiled what he calls his Protecting America's Children Act at the Children's Assessment Center on Monday morning.

If the bill passes, it would deny federal funding to those who allow predators to get out of jail on a pre-trial release. Sexual offenses against children are the most heinous crimes committed in our society, according to Poe.

U.S. Representative Poe said offenders can still be released on a secured bond. but not solely on their word. "They have already proven themselves untrustworthy," said Poe on Monday. Poe says the bill has bipartisan support and he expects little opposition. He believes it could be signed into law by the end of 2009.

The Houston Police Department and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia have both voiced support for the measure.

THEY'RE COMING FOR YOU!

THE WARRANT SWEEP IS COMING TO HOUSTON!

The Houston Police Department has a message to those who have ignored numerous warnings and have warrants out for their arrest: Pay your fines or be handcuffed by an officer at your place of business or home and be taken to jail.

Officers will begin a warrant sweep in neighborhoods and businesses throughout the city and urge anyone with an outstanding warrant to go to any of six Municipal Courts annexes to take care of their business, or take advantage of more convenient options by paying their fines online, over the phone or by postal mail.

“We prefer those individuals with warrants to avoid the embarrassment of an officer coming to their workplace or home to arrest them in front of their coworkers or family members,” said HPD Assistant Chief John Trevino. “Our goal of publicizing this warrant sweep is to avoid having our officers make such arrests and to have those with warrants come forward and clear their names before it’s too late,” he added.

“It is unfortunate that individuals with outstanding citations now face arrest,” said Judge Berta Mejia, director and presiding judge of the Municipal Courts. “The City of Houston Municipal Courts provides various options to individuals to assist them in resolving their delinquent traffic citations, including the recent amnesty period, which just concluded. With the impending Warrant Sweep announced by HPD, I strongly urge anyone with outstanding warrants to come in and resolve their citations instead of facing arrest.”

Director/Chief Clerk Sahira Abdool said Municipal Courts officials have mailed notices to all persons with active warrants pending against them. “We are here to assist individuals with clearing their warrants as quickly as possible,” Abdool said. “It is our priority to ensure that individuals who have cleared their warrants are not subject to arrest, and to support the HPD warrants sweep for those individuals refusing to take care of their business with us.”

For more information about warrants or citations, visit www.houstontx.gov/courts or contact the City of Houston’s Helpline at 3-1-1 or 713-837-0311 if outside the City of Houston.

IS HE LEAVING THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT?

THE HPD EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT CHIEF COULD BE THE NEXT PASADENA POLICE CHIEF!

The Insite hears from a reliable source that HPD could lose one of the most respected officers in the department. That person says Executive Assistant Police Chief Mike Thaler could be leaving for the Pasadena Police Department. Thaler is one step closer to becoming the chief there I'm told by the anonymous source. Those in the department say Thaler is one of the best cops out there and his word is his bond. I'm also told he comes from a family of police officers who have committed their lives to public service. That source says if we lose Thaler it would be Houston's loss and definitely Pasadena's gain!

Update: Assistant Chief Thaler confirms through the Houston Police department that he has submitted an application to the Pasadena Police Department. That's as much as he would say and that's as much as I asked. The Insite doesn't want to be too nosey!

YOUNG KIDS WE ALL CAN BE PROUD OF!

POSITIVE NEWS ABOUT THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY!

The Insite would like to thank the staff of the Houston Parks department. I served as the master of ceremonies for their annual ASK awards program. It's an event that honors young student athletes who have excelled in their school and community. $1200 scholarships were handed out to the young people who will head to the college of their choice. Lots of people were in attendance including Doug Earle, Kenneth Allen, Horace Chaney, Charles Payton, Anthony Smith, Bria Davis, Fred Arnold, and many more. By the way, ASK stands for Athletes Seeking Knowledge!

THEY COULD MAKE A KILLING OFF BOOTLEG!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF MONEY COULD BE MADE OFF OF THIS CHURCH EQUIPMENT?

I was interviewing legendary Houston Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell on Monday when I had a chance to see one of his editing stations. This particular room is used at Windsor Village to dub copies of his video sermons. The first thing that came to my mind was that a bootlegger would have a field day in that room. There are dozens of burning stations and with that kind of volume a bootlegger could make a killing. Just a thought from the Insite. But I'm sure the 'church' will have no part of the Insite's illegal thoughts!

KIRBYJON IS ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER TOO!

THE PASTOR WHO EMBRACES TECHNOLOGY!

After decades of resisting, prominent Houston pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell is giving in.

The leader of Windsor Village United Methodist Church has decided to venture into television.

"Living the Kingdom Experience" began airing in June in cities throughout the U.S., including on FOX 26.

"Not only did I not think we'd go on television, I never thought I'd be a pastor, but all of this is new to me and I'm excited about it," said Caldwell.

Caldwell says he will be adding even more stations around the U.S. to carry his television ministry in July.

If that is not enough, he is also starting to participate in Twitter and Facebook pages.

Caldwell tells the Insite he's a man who embraces technology to ensure he doesn't lose his younger members of his congregation.

The prominent religious leader says he has at least 16,000 members in his church and he hopes to bring more into the flock.

Caldwell's television program currently airs in such cities as Houston, Boston, and Orlando!

WALGREENS CAMPAIGN JUST GOT THE 'F' GRADE FROM ME!

HOW MUCH RECEIPT DO I NEED FOR SPENDING A DOLLAR?

I was pretty excited a couple of weeks ago about the go green campaign and sale at Walgreens. They gave a 20% discount on all of their green products. They even gave out free green bags to its customers instead of those plastic ones that build up in your house. But what I didn't notice until today was just how much paper they waste at that store. I got a receipt for a 96 cents purchase. The receipt was about 12 inches long. I wonder how many trees went into that 1 item dollar receipt. I think Walgreens needs to ask if customers want a receipt and if they do make sure it's a small slip and not a thesis paper. Just the Insite venting!

HIGH DEFINITION IS MEAN TO THE INSITE!

I LOOKED LIKE A GROWN MAN WITH CHICKEN POX!

I had a chance to watch myself on high definition 1080p since the big switch over and I was disappointed. I hate the make-up I've been told I have to wear on air because of high definition. I usually just grab a towel or tissue and knock the 8 ball shine off my face. I don't think that will work any more. I checked myself out Monday night and it looked like I had chicken pox. When I saw the anchors they looked like models because they followed instructions. I guess I will have to follow those instructions from now on. It's really going to be difficult because of all the heat. I don't know how women can stand that stuff on their faces during the heat. I guess it's an art form. Would you wear make-up in the this heat? The Insite would like to hear your opinion!

KIRBYJON FINALLY DECIDES TO TAKE IT NATIONAL!

THAT WAS QUICK: USHER FILING FOR DIVORCE!

THE REASON BEHIND THE SPLIT HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED!

Usher's marriage is falling apart according to Hollywood sources. He has filed for divorce from Tameka Foster Raymond after less than two years of marriage. The court record did not give details. They have two sons under the age of 2, and Tameka has three children from a previous marriage.

From TMZ:

As of now, the cause of separation has not yet been made public but, given the impressive amount of interest this is generating, it is believed Usher will be making a statement as regards it any hour now. Presumably, sources speculate, the divorce proceedings will be hushed, since both the singer and his wife are believed not to want to play the separation out in the media.

MURANO IS OUT OF THERE AT TEXAS A&M!

SHE WAS GIVEN ONE OF THE WORST REVIEWS EVER AS LEADER OF THE SCHOOL!

Texas A&M University System regents are meeting following the abrupt resignation of embattled A&M president Elsa Murano.

Murano was not in attendance Monday when the meeting began on the A&M campus. She announced her resignation Sunday, just 17 months after she became the first Hispanic and first female president in the school's 132-year history.

The board of regents were expected to discuss Murano's resignation in the afternoon.

A&M system Chancellor Mike McKinney gave Murano a scathing performance review of her first full year on the job, giving her the lowest possible marks for decisiveness and not being a team player.

More than 30 faculty and student members gathered outside near the meeting in support of Murano, who said she hopes to return to the faculty.

ABE SAYS HE'S OUT OF HERE ON AUGUST 31!

THIS IS A RELEASE FROM DR. SAAVEDRA!

“As everyone knows, we have just completed one of the most successful academic years for HISD. The work that you and your staffs have done this year has been extraordinary. I look forward to the official state accountability ratings that we should receive by August 1 and an opportunity to celebrate with all of you. When I announced in early February my intention to retire within the next year, I purposely did not identify my actual exit date. I wanted the board to have an opportunity to start the process of a superintendent search and have a successor ready to continue the work. The superintendent search is moving in earnest and the board expects to have a short list of candidates to interview by some time in July. I am sure they will be ready to make their selection soon after. Based on this projected timeline, I have informed the board that August 31, 2009 would be an appropriate exit date for me. I look forward to continuing our work together during the next two months and an opportunity to celebrate our successes on behalf of the children of Houston. Thank you.”

GAIL BROWN CELEBRATES HER BIG DAY WITH LOTS OF FRIENDS!

THE WHO'S WHO IN HOUSTON BIRTHDAY PARTY GUEST LIST!

Houstonian Gail Brown celebrated her 50th birthday party in downtown Houston on Saturday night and it was a who's who in television news and politics. I dare say more than 200 people showed up to party with the life of the party - Gail. It's clear Gail has touched a lot of people's lives and has become a friend to many. In typical Gail fashion she asked all of her guests to give to kidney care rather than buy her a gift. I was suppose to be at the party for about 20 minutes and snap some pictures then move on. I found myself locked down to a cool party for hours. It was held at The Real Sammie's nightclub in downtown Houston. Some of the people there: Sammie Relford, Jerome Gray, Gina Gaston, Melissa Wilson, Mary Benton, Michael Moore, Andrea White, Patrick Trahan, Mia Gradney, Troy Clendenin, James Campbell, Carolyn Campbell, Eric James, Ted Bowen, Terrence Jackson, Doug Miller, and the list goes on. And a great time was had by all!

Here's more about the TV Judge:

Judge Alex is the only television judge with extensive police, legal and judicial experience, presiding over a wide array of cases, resolving complicated issues with his straight forward approach and cogent rulings.

In October 2008, Judge Alex was voted the most trustworthy face in daytime television and he was recently featured in People Magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive” issue.

Most recently, Judge Alex served as the Associate Administrative Judge of the Criminal Division of Florida’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit, which services Miami-Dade County.
