Every six months to a year I hear the same allegations from those who still enjoy Houston's nightlife.
Those people who happen to be African American write to me and complain they have been denied entry into one of Houston's many nightclubs or bars.
The latest allegations have come from a group of professionals. They say clubs on Washington Avenue and Kirby have turned them away at the door because they're Black.
One Houston nightclub promoter says he was left standing at the door of a swanky new nightspot because he is African American.
He says when he arrived at the business it was clearly not at capacity.
Mark Martin says despite that he was told he could not go in. He says there were groups of Whites allowed in but not him.
Another African American Houston businessman says he encountered the same type of situation last Saturday night.
He says when he tried to get in this Washington Avenue club he was denied entry because he wasn't on the list.
He says he noticed several Whites who did not go through a name on the list check but got in without a problem.
If this is still happening in Houston in 2011 it's truly sad. What's my suggestion?
I say on the clubs biggest night turnout in numbers with signs warning good people the kind of discrimination that allegedly goes on at the establishment.
That will send a strong message.
Also blog and place it on Facebook and Twitter.
That's if the issue is that important to you.

hey Isiah,
ReplyDeleteI actually left you a voicemail at fox and I am sending you a facebook message. Please respond.
Unfortunately this incident is so true and I REFUSE to patronize ANY establishment on Washington because of the way we were treated the weekend of 9/25, my husbands birthday. We went to Sawyer Park on Washington for a day party for my husband. I guess our party size exceeded the black count for this establishment because after the 5th person we kept getting calls that they could not get in. One of our guests had on a button up shirt, non-baggy jeans, and all white tennis shoes. He was told he could not get in because his tennis shoes were G-Nikes?! I guess G-Nikes are too common amongst black people. I was in Sawyer Park and 50% of the white customers were wearing tennis shoes that looked like their dogs chewed them up! So it's okay to wear funky tennis shoes, but all white G-Nikes, that look like they just came out of the box are a NO! My husband and his guests tried to go to 2 other establishments on Washington and experienced the same issues. I was so upset I left and met them at City Centre, which was our next stop for dinner. City Centre is an amazing area and will be the only place I go in the future. I REFUSE to give money to establishments that do not want me or those who look like me there.
ReplyDeleteIKE WATCH YOURSELF....THIER IS TWO SIDES TO A STORY. BESIDES YOUR HURTING YOURSELF TO EVEN TAKEN AS A SERIOUS REPORTER OR EVEN AN ANCHOR. I WOULD SLOW YOUR FLOW ON THIS KIND OF RUSH TO JUDGEMENT STORIES.
ReplyDeleteI say the first step is to video the action, both covertly and then overtly. Catch them in the act and then sue them in the courts. The last thing any business wants is that type of attention. With live video, media outlets don't have to worry about slander and you are practically gift wrapping a hot story for them.
ReplyDeleteIsiah...keep doing what you do! Don't let ignorant people try to discredit the good you are doing. If there are 2 sides to a story then the other side needs to respond. But as someone who has experienced this first hand...I say hush to you unaffected parties!
ReplyDeleteKeep reporting on stuff like this. People who tell you to watch yourself are most likely guilty of it. Racism is still bad in this country. Every day I hear people making comments and am constantly correcting them. My own family seems to forget that my daughter is half Hispanic and make racist comments. Hate is bred. It is a shame! Keep doing what you do!
ReplyDeleteLIKE US BLACK FOLKS ARE RACIST? PLEASE CHILD.
ReplyDeleteIKE YOUR ALWAYS GONNA BE SEEN AS A TWO BIT RACE BAITTER REPORTER. I AM SORRY BUT THATS WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK.EVEN YOUR CO-WORKERS. I HAPPEN TO THINK YOUR AN EXCELLENT REPORTER. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU IN THE ANCHOR CHAIR ONE DAY. I FEEL LIKE YOUR ANCHOR MATERIAL. BUT I THINK THESE LITTLE PETTY STORIES ARE HURTING YOUR IMAGE. NO ADVANCEMENT IN THE NEWS ROOM FOR THIS OTHER THAN THE BEAT. I THINK YOUR SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.AND I MEAN NO HARM TO YOU BROTHER. I JUST HAPPEN TO THINK YOUR A PRO AND A EXCELLENT REPORTER. I KNOW ONE DAY YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE THAT PAPER.
ReplyDeleteALL I HAVE TO SAY IS CHECK OUT YELP ON SAWYER PARK....IT SAYS IT ALL... THEY HAVE 79 REVIEWS AND ONLY 3 STARS.
