Golf lessons, Pilates classes
Embattled TSU President Priscilla Slades spending continues to be under the microscope. Her contract allows Slade to join "a health and/or dining club" of her choice, and TSU spent more than $20,000 on her membership dues and incidentals at the Houstonian Club and Spa and the Houston Club, a private dining club downtown.
In addition to the Houstonian's annual dues of $5,738, Slade charged $1,280 for golf lessons and 47 Pilates exercise sessions at a cost between $55 and $65 each to the university. She also spent $2,316 at the club's Trellis Spa.
On purchase orders, university officials justified the expenses as necessary "for building university relationships" and "for stress release/relaxation" related to Slade's role as president.
Slade also used her expense account to buy nearly $800 worth of gift baskets for regents, in most cases as birthday presents. And she spent $4,884 at Neiman Marcus on candles, perfume and neckties as Christmas gifts for employees.
Last year she traveled to Beijing in June and November to establish exchange programs for students and faculty members with Chinese universities. Slade is currently suspended from the university.
I am usually not a supporter of TSU, but I would be interested to see what the spending habits are for the presidents and A&M, UT or Rice. It does look like the Houston media is overly focused on her.
ReplyDeleteTSU is hardly ever mentioned in the same sentence as those schools- FOR A REASON!!! It is a bad school. They aren't meant to be a TAMU, they have a different mission. Please do not compare TSU to Rice, Rice is an elite private school.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call TSU a bad school- but I do believe it could be better starting with strong leadership. TSU isn't supposed to be like Rice, it has a different place in higher education. Everyfew years someone tries to say it would be a good idea to merge with UH but that is a mismatch too! TSU, being in the 4th largest city can do much better. And to the other anonymous, media will not go after A&M as long as they are in College Station unless you count the negligence when they had all the students die building a bonfire. I'm sure aggies think everyone blew that out of proportion.
ReplyDeleteTSU is hardly ever mentioned with the primary schools because it’s a joke. It's more of a high school with government subsidized funding. It's atypical that a black woman would run TSU just like the government officials run New Orleans and most of Louisiana. Corruptly. You never hear of New Orleans being touted as one of the top cities in the nation for ANYTHING except a big party. You also never hear of TSU touted as a major college. I think it's time to move TSU to Louisiana with the rest of the corrupt organizations. Ms.Slade is showing the "You owe me" attitude that so many black politicians and so-called leaders use to cover their asses and make a buck on the side for themselves. Just look at Cynthia McKinney out of Georgia. How did that piece of crap get elected to public office?

Dr. Pris needs to go. A lot got better under her term (new buildings, new labs, more students, new profs), but skimming funds ain't no joke.
I wonder, where was the Board of Regents? If the knew (and took a piece of the action) toss them out.
If they didn't know, why not? It's there f--in' job to know. Either way, clean house through the board of regents.
As to Whitey's remarks about all coloreds sticking together, remember, she is George W.'s girl, and in lockstep with Texas GOP politics. W.'s Daddy is head of TSU's endowment.
Funny how these Crackers all love W. (illegal war), Cheney (illegal Halibuton contracts), DeLay (illegal influence pedaling) Lay (Grand Theft Stockmarket), and Perry (illegal homosexual acts?).
I say make Tom DeLay the new TSU President. That sucka can raise some money, and having to work in the Third Ward with Black Folks is a much better punishment for him than a mininum security federal joint.
I say let Rick Perry put TSU under UT system, the same as was done for A&M Prairie View, and many of the ills that come with managers thinking they do not have to answer to anybody would disappear. Let's clean up place and the sooner the better. This limbo is hurting TSU. Slade's career as a fundraiser is over, her credibility as a leader is gone, so what's left to justify keeping her.
ReplyDeleteTo anonymous at 6.38pm, Prairie View is NOT under UT, it is under TAMU. Before you complain, have your facts straight. PV is no TSU. It is a sad day at TSU, but like the Phoenix rises, TSU will rise again. It's a tough school interms facing adversity. Since the beginning it is has had people waiting for it to crumble. It comes close, and then it manages to survive. This may well be the biggest test of all for TSU. To the poor unfortunate emlyess caught in the crossfire, God's blessings to those of you that we innocent and those that are guilty, good for you. Too little, too late. Word is that others at TSU should worry, perhaps. If that is the case the DA needs to do what needs to be done. Let's clan it up and move on with the business of education young hungry minds.
ReplyDeleteYour predjudice attitudes towards TSU is almost comical. Exactly what makes this school a "bad school?" Because it majority of the school's population isn't white? Because it isn't a private school? Throughout it's history, TSU has educated some of the most intelligent African Americans of our time. Barbara Jordan, Yolanda Adams, Mickey Leland, Craig Washington just to name a few. You cannot stereotype the entire school because of one person's mistake. So what if it is the heart of third ward? Have you actually been there? It is no worse than any other part of town (except to a person who is ignorant such as yourselves). For the person who thinks blacks in power run things "corruptly," what was Ken Lay's excuse? He wasn't black? What about Tom DeLay? Martha Stewart?Dennis Kozlowski?Bernie Ebbers? All of the other corporate scandals created by WHITE AMERICA? I do not approve of Priscilla Slade's spending habits, and I do believe the school is better off without her, but check your facts before you make illegitimate/ignorant comments. All of you made it necessary to comment negatively towards TSU and praise Rice and Texas A&M probably didn't attend neither school. So, until you've been there and know what happens on a consistent basis, you may want to keep your negative comments to yourself.
