LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO GO THIS WEEKEND? HOW ABOUT LIBERTY COUNTY!

WITH HIGH GAS PRICES IT'S A CHEAP ONE DAY TRIP!

I'm always intrigued by history and old things. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out the city of Liberty, Texas had an exact replica of the liberty bell in their community. It's located just off the town square at the Geraldine Humphreys Cultural Center. But many in the area simply know it as the local library. Now the bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in England back in 1960. It is the first true replica of the liberty bell in Philadelphia. The bell and tower in Liberty were dedicated back in 1976. And believe it or not John 'The Duke' Wayne was there in Liberty back then for the big event. There is also a time capsule at the bottom of the bell tower that will be opened in 2076. I doubt any of us will get to see that. Make sure you go check out the big bell in Liberty!

One too many XXXXXX references. Difficult to distinguish when the XXXXXX is for the inmate or the activist. I hardly doubt that physical threats have been made to anyone for a fee to be paid. Why are they sending this to The Insight and not the authoriites? What a poor attempt to instigate drama - and what's sad is that people will be gullible enough to believe this exaggerated story. Also, let's not be so critical of our 100+ "Houston Activists" (by the way, there is a full roster of them - we don't know WHO this person is writing about - don't jump to conclusions). The activists could not make a "for-profit business" of their community outreach without the media willingly airing whatever tragic ghetto-ness that is press released to them. Let's not be so limited in our thinking people.

  3. I was born and raised there and I didn't know that John Wayne had been there! Wow! Did you check out Main street, there is a historical marker there saying that used to be the Spanish Market. There is a bank across the street that was the site of Sam Houston's office.

Did you check out the graveyards? In the city cemetery, there is a big house on the end of it, next to a really huge tombstone. A boy from that family climbed that tombstone one night and it fell on top of him, killing him. The boy's grave is next to the tombstone. It's a famous local legend. Also, that swamp behind the graveyard has claimed some graves going back to the 19th century.

It's been about 20 years, but on the western part of town, sat the remnants of the school for black kids back in the Crow days. My dad drove us out there and it was covered with vines and weeds. It's a piece of history, but I don't know if it's still there or not.

Thanks for the kudos to my hometown.

  4. For three years I resided in a small town just east of Liberty called Aames. Population way under 1,000 when I was there. I visited the library, and I have seen the bell. Personally I wished some one would renovate and open the train depot there. If Houston (and surrounding areas) ever stepped into the new millenium, I see that train depot servicing many people that live in Liberty and work in Houston.

Liberty is very quaint, I think I was only called N!&&er about three times while I lived there. See..........progress!
