You may not know him by name but his face has been popping up a lot on television as of late. He is HPD Sergeant Shelby Stewart. Stewart was a low profile Houston police officer for several years until a ruling came down in the department that affected him and his fellow African American police officers.
That ruling was no facial hair. Stewart says he and several other African American officers suffer from a sensitive skin condition that prevents them from shaving their beards and goatees. Those men refused to follow the department's directive by removing their facial growth.

As a result of Stewarts defiance Chief Harold Hurtt took those officer out of uniform. That was more than 4 years ago. Stewart now goes to work everyday at the Houston police department's jail in civilian clothing. He and those officers have filed a lawsuit against the department which will likely be tied up in the courts long after Hurtt is gone. But Stewart wants to send a point. You can't trample over the rights and medical conditions of others.
That was then, now Stewart can be found tackling other civil rights issues. He formed an alliance with Millions More Movement leader Deric Muhammad.
Stewart first publicly made his presence known when Black activists came out against Mayor Bill White earlier this year. White purchased a newspaper ad for the King Holiday. That ad placed the Mayor between Dr. King and President Barack Obama. Stewart was there alongside Muhammad and Quanell X demanding an apology for what they called the Mayor's lack of good judgment.
But that wasn't Stewarts last public sighting. He was again before city council for the second time in two months on Wednesday with a noose hanging from his hands. He was there complaining about the discipline issued to a Houston fire captain who had a rope hanging in his locker.
Stewart has shocked many with his all so public activism. It's very rare to see a man who's on the police force speaking out on issues he feel is important.
So keep an eye out for the activist Sergeant. Cop by night and as Smokey Phillips would say freedom fighter by day!
I worked with Shelby Stewart for many years in the SE division and he was an IDIOT then and is a IDIOT now. Some things never change. And the facial incident is Funny. How can he shave everywhere on his face but where his goatee is, makes no sense. The fact is he wants to wear a goatee so he is going to make an issue out of it.
ReplyDeleteYup...he is a lazy, biggoted idiot. He easily makes over 100 thousand a year and does nothing but hide in cell up on the 6th floor watching tv and reading the paper. When one asks a question of him (he is a Sgt., you know, even if he IS a welfare Sgt.) he says, "Go ask another Sgt." What a waste. The inside of his car looks like a bar ditch in the 5th ward...full of trash and all of his dry-cleaning... mounds of mail and trash in the seats and on the dash. This guy is a complete tool. Now...I look forward to all the other idiot racists who will claim that mean ol' whitey is trying to keep this brother down...but the reality is that I actually know him, actually work with him, and am not suddenly accuanted with him by read in some fluff piece about what a grand savior he is. Jeeez what a duche bag.
ReplyDeleteHe can be that much of an idiot white boy he made sergeant.
ReplyDeleteThese ugly comments prove he's doing something right to get under people's skin like this.
ReplyDeleteHe is a lawsuit Sgt. could not pass the test on his own
ReplyDelete"He can be that much of an idiot white boy he made sergeant." 7:08am
ReplyDelete"These ugly comments prove he's doing something right to get under people's skin like this."...the "white boy", that is...
"Sgt. Stewart joined the Houston Police Department in 1982 as a patrolman in SE Houston. In 1998, he was promoted to sergeant. For the past 10 years, he has worked in the city jail" (www.blackofficersforjustice.com). He has worked (scratch that - hid out) in the jail for 10 years!?! HPD almost always has to force new sergeants to do one year in the jail - the fact that he stays there paints a picture of this sergeant. He is either a DISCIPLINE problem or LAZY (maybe both). Note that in resumes, most ACTIVIST police officers never comment about any police related accomplishments - that is because they spend all of their time (and the departments) trying to BEAT the system.
ReplyDeleteSo keep an eye out for the activist Sergeant. Cop by night and as Smokey Phillips would say freedom fighter by day! ----- GOOD LUCK with that ----- you migth see a freedom fighter now and then but not the cop! This guy has always been lazy and looks towards lawsuits and activist activities to get promoted and now take undeserved money. It looks like the department has bent over backwards helping the bearded few by finding non-uniformed assignments at no loss of pay ..... now they want to bite the hand the feeds them!
ReplyDeleteIsiah, do you see all of these intelligent comments about your post. It's always amazing to see the internet bring out all of these cowards in here. It must be real easy to sit behind a computer in the comforts of your cave and say the things said in here. I would like to see all of you step out in public and spew this nonsense. I would love to see you try. Who is the real bigot, Bigot?
ReplyDeleteWe need more officials to step up and be true leaders, everyone don't have to be in the lime light, but more city or county officials should be role models for their communities.

He failed the promotional test and was part of a lawsuit citing that the test was racially biased. He is referred to as a "Welfare Sergeant" b/c the promotion was given to him, not earned.

And you hiding behind the moniker of "PeacefulBrother"? Sounds like you are hiding behind a computer as well. Identify yourself!!!! Unless you are scared?
His goatee is clean, I guess this condition affects selected spots on the face. If they can't legally get rid of this deadbeat, then let him hide out. He's not an activist, he's an opportunist waiting for an easy payoff. Cracks me up that he has supporters, taxpayers, whose very money he is wasting by sitting around picking his nose.
ReplyDeletehaters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletewhy you hate a man for is political view. i am so sure you fat cats crying about him are so big time hard workers.
Strange how people crow the loudest about the things they know the least about. If you knew that HPD was taking away a right that the U.S. CONSTITUTION guarantees all Americans, would you stand with him? This is not about attitudes, it's about obeying the law. The Chief's department rules must never trump the Law of the Land.
ReplyDelete"... a right that the U.S. CONSTITUTION guarantees all Americans ..." Niether the CONSTITUTION nor the CIVIL RIGHTS ACTS guarantees beards! It appears that HPD is allowing these public servants to keep their jobs with no loss of pay - where is the harm? Earlier in another article (I wish I could find it) these officers stated that they were "handicapped" due to a medical disease. What about real handicapped individuals (wheelchair, blind, deaf)? Does HPD have to hire them or keep them in uniform as well? Why does it always have to be about race?
ReplyDeleteSee what I mean? As we go along, please , let us keep our blood pressures down. It is not about how you feel, it is about the law. The disease resulting from close shave policies often is so repulsive, some persons cannot work in food service, in close contact with the public, or in any job where healthy skin and "good grooming" may turn people's stomachs. Close Shaving to get groomed does just the opposite. IT CAUSES the CONDITION. Are you up on the Constitution? You talk awfully loud about what the Constitution says. 90% of college students admit that they could not pass a test with a score of 80 or better. As we go along, I will direct you to chapter and verse regarding the issues. Will you support his rights if you have the proof, or is it that you just don't like him and it will make no difference?
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:57, scared? of what sir? A bunch of internet haters and bigots? No Sir, you would have to do more to frighten me. So, you've tried your childish comeback, what's your next move? I'm not the hater remember. I'm the one calling out the haters. Not for a fight. I would like to know how these folks really feel. Do you all really believe in the hate that you spew, or do you just come on the internet to say the most eye catching things for attention. I'd like to know. And yes, I am a Peaceful Brother. I do not care for hate, or violence. I believe in civilized discourse. What do you believe in?
ReplyDeleteHello, Anonymous! We all look for a worthwhile cause to dedicate ourselves. Seems like you've found yours. It's "Knocking Shelby Stewart!" The activism bit is somewhat new, but your far- reaching hatred goes back, at least, to 1982... more than a quarter century ago... actually in the LAST century. It has nothing to do with The new Face of Activism. But it still eats at you. Are you concerned that people might like him? Would you hate me if my car, my PERSONAL vehicle, were "junky?" Suppose the Mayor had a "junky" car, would he be in your sights too? You say he is an idiot...a judgement call...An opinion is not a fact. Stewart is joined by 4 others in the beard deal... STOP! THINK! Are these guys so in love with their beards that they would be involved with this for years? You trivialize an issue BUT you don't even ADDRESS THE ISSUE. What is worse, is that you are an insider who should know better. Esprit de Corps is important among those who may have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to defend this City. Is it the title of Activist, the Facial Hair issue, or what? Your terms like "biggoted, lazy, idiot, he easily makes over 100 thousand a year, he reads the newspaper(?), welfare-Sgt., the inside of his car looks like a bar ditch in 5th ward (in the Black Community?), mounds of mail on seat and dash, dry cleaning... (peeping into his car?). Man, you go on and on like an spy, a mole... but all the things you say have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with the issues which you still have not dealt with. And you are so committed to your causes that you "look forward to all the other idiot racists woh will claim that mean ol whitey is trying to keep this brother down." You look forward to it... what a noble aspiration, to say that 'mean old whitey' is being falsely accused. The 'beard' issue that we're a
ReplyDeletetalking about was introduced by Chief Hurtt... a Black Man. "Why does it always have to be about race?", you ask. It seems that's where YOU have put it. It is not the issue, but I guess it is a good vehicle for your sentiments about Stewart. Here's an idea... Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel.
"Esprit de Corps" is an earned brotherhood, or sorts. I would NEVER stand shoulderto shoulder defending this city with that "biggoted, lazy, idiot, that easily makes over 100 thousand a year, he reads the newspaper(?), welfare-Sgt., the inside of his car looks like a bar ditch in 5th ward (in the Black Community?), mounds of mail on seat and dash, dry cleaning..." because he is an unsafe slug. Not that it would be an issue, hiding on the 6th floor and all...
ReplyDeleteTalk about not knowing what you are talking about...good God. Again...my experience and knowledge is first-hand...not obtained by a fluff piece on this educated idiot. So..."fight the power" amongst the other ignorant brothers. I'm not buying it...and, oddly enough, neither is Harry Hurtt. So, take your "4" guys that have joined forces and know that the other 4,896 who actually know these guys are not fooled a single bit.
Bye now!
P.S. - nobody is "peeking" in that nasty ol' car...the junk and trash piled up inside of it are CLEARLY visible from several stories up when one looks out into the parking lot...
"Harry" Hurtt? "Harry?" Friend of yours?
ReplyDeleteYo, Anonymous...You say 4,896 officers KNOW Stewart and they feel like you do. And You KNOW each one? And you KNOW that each feels the same as you? Do you really KNOW 4,896 officers? Do you even KNOW 4,896 people? Honestly! You're in danger of being called a genius, here... Your credibility is on the line....waiting for your answer...
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure knowing 4,896 officers would fit the bill to be called a genius...that is generally an intelligence or smarts thing. Knowing officers is simply a number thing. Perhaps, well-traveled, or friendly, or in a position that requires interaction with a large number of officers, or just good ol' fashioned busy-body...but surely knowing 1 person or 100,00 persons would not qualify someone to be a genius. If so, what is the majic number? 100? 1,000? 100,00? "Honestly! You're in danger of being called an idiot here... Your credibility is on the line....waiting for your answer...
ReplyDeleteHow many policemen are there on the HPD?
ReplyDeleteI like to see you cops arguing that way me and my buddies can focus on how to out smart you stupid cops.
ReplyDeleteYup..."outsmart" 'em, huh? (huge eyeroll) Whatev...Lottsa turd in the pen...and plenty of room for more. Keep kidding yourself, braintrust. Dont have to be too awfully smart to get the jump on ya'll.
