PEOPLE GIVE YOU STRANGE LOOKS IF YOU'RE ON A BUS STOP!

CAN I GET A RIDE OR CAN YOU RUN ME TO WALMART?

I've never quite understood the bus mentality in the deep South.  A lot of people believe riding a bus is beneath them.  If I had around the clock bus service in my neck of the woods I would hop on public transportation in a minute.  On Monday I decided to sit down at a bus stop near OST and Almeda as my photographer was shooting an accident scene.  While sitting there people gave me almost a snobbish like, I'm better than you type look.  Have you ever had that before? In big cities everyone will hop on a bus or a train without a second thought.  It seems to be almost a crime to ride the bus in the south.  In my hometown of Baton Rouge no one rides the bus unless their car is broken.  So, that leads me to the question of the day...If the Insite was car less would you give me a ride if you saw me at the bus stop?

  2. Houston and the lifestyle of the 4 million + people who live in the area are not designed around mass transportation, but cars instead. I'm not saying it's good or bad - it just is what it is. As a result, we plan our lives - where we work, live, go to school, shop - around getting around by car. We have the room, so people in Houston want to live in quiet suburbs without trains and buses driving by all hours. And because we live all spread out, we need cars, and trains and buses don't work well - it's a cycle that feeds on itself. And our children are raised with this preference, and they continue the same lifestyle. This is why rail will not work in Houston in my lifetime.

I've ridden the bus in southern cities and northern, but I haven't used buses on a regular basis since I got out of school. I take the rail to the TMC for doctor's appointments, but that's about it - mass transit is too inconvenient in Houston.

BTW, I'd give you a ride. But not someone I didn't know.

in the south - the Car is King.

    That's one of the reasons people are really resisting the expansion of Metro Rail, etc;

When I travel to D.C., Chicago, and Atlanta, I look forward to riding public transportation because its cheap and convenient.

Finally, If I saw you at a bus stop wearing those red socks, I would laugh, throw you some change and roll up my window :-)

Dude, I'm as preppy as you are but you got to loose those socks. We stopped doing that here in the 8th grade. Nice on my 3yr old son, but not on a grown ass man!

Atlanta (MARTA) and Dallas (DART) are in the South and the subway/rail systems in those cities are used a lot. And if you look at numbers, I think Houstonians ride urban transportation then both of those cities with whats provided. The people of Houston have been left out in terms of urban transportation because of special interest groups such as the oil companies not wanting rail represented in the Energy Capital of the World. They figured, people in Houston need to ride in cars to represent their oil products. With that said Houston is finally getting a rail system built (better late than ever). Here is a link to what the new main transit station will look like, its pretty cool: http://www.eekarchitects.com/portfolio_projects.cfm?projectID=127610&currentImage=84340

I use the Metro system during the week to save money. It is very convienient for me. Isiah I would pick you up if you were at the bus stop. You should not be on the street dressed like that.

LOL well I have a car and I used to N.Shepard Park & Ride and rode ONE bus downtown for Jury Duty a couple weeks ago. All you have to do is show your jury summons and they give you a bus pass good for the whole day. I mean I wasn't trippin and the buses uses the HOV lane and we zipped by on I45 while we watch the traffic at a standstill. I don't ride the bus, but I don't see anything wrong with it and I got to my destination [Jury Duty] on time. I will use it again if I have to and there is NO SHAME in it. With gas prices and all, you'd think people would try different alternatives. The buses are very clean and were quiet.

Insite -- If I saw you at a bus stop it'd be because either I was waiting at the same stop, or I was riding by on a bus! :) Seriously, I don't have a vehicle -- I ride METRO regularly. It's relatively inexpensive, reasonably clean and comfortable and has a pretty wide service area. In short, it fits my lifestyle. But, if I were driving a car by the bus stop at which you happened to be sitting...yes, I'd definitely pick you up -- because I 'know' you [so to speak]! :)

  9. Isiah,
You know good and darn well the passing entourage of onlookers weren't saying:

"Eeww look at him sitting at the bus stop"...

    Instead they were saying

"Is that Isiah Carey sitting at the bus stop???!!!"

Yeah I'd scoop you up and give you a ride if I saw you at the bus stop. Perhaps. lol

Its defiantly not cool to ride public transit in California either, Well at least Southern California. But times are changing, gas is going up again, and soon I think everybody all over the nation will be in favor of public transportation.

  12. Honestly I would ride the bus more if it ran more frequently and went more places I wanted to go. Metro just makes it way to hard to ride the bus.

    Oh, and forget the haterz.

Big cities are known for mass transit. They are pretty much centered around it, and Houston is it. Its so damn big that ppl think you really do need a car to get around. however, I think its just the way we are raised and where we are raised ppl from up North start early riding the train and sometimes its 2 trains and a bus just to get to school, but we don't have to do that here because we are spread out. And another thing is houston just isn't one of those cities, which is why a lot of ppl still don't ride the rail. But to answer your question, I would only give you a ride if the bus wasn't running...lmao! i.e. after 2 a.m....lol just playin yes i'd give you a ride Insite!
