DEFENDING DR. SLADE = YES OR NO!!!!
Many are questioning the wisdom of some African American figures in Houston as they run to the aid of embattled TSU president Dr. Priscilla Slade. Here are the facts according to an audit done by a TSU auditor. Slade is accused of misusing more than half a million dollars in university funds for her own personal gain. The list includes furnishings in her Memorial Drive home to palates classes costing an arm and a leg. Auditors say this abuse has been going on since she arrived at the university. But Slade supporters say despite the half million dollar spending spree, she's increased enrollment and endowments at the historically black university. But the question some are now asking is why are individuals like Sylvester Turner, Al Green, Shelia Jackson Lee, Robert Muhammad and others running to defend the flagrant misuse of authority by Dr. Slade. Is it simply because she's black? Have they chimed in on the wrong fight by defending the TSU president? The Insite would love to have your opinion on this!!!!
I think they have absolutely picked the wrong person to support. Dr. Slade has broken school policies. What kind of example is she setting for the students on the campus. Can they go into their algebra class and change their own grade and not be prepared to suffer the consequences. I don't think so. She should've stepped down on her own instead of causing the black cloud to linger over the university this long. So back to the original question. I think she's being supported because she's black. We've got to stop supporting a person who's done wrong even though they break the law. Let her family support her in that regard. We need Green, Turner and others to support justified issues in the community.

TSU Student
Nearly every college in Texas saw increased enrollment during the years that Slade has been at TSU. SFA in Nac. is about the only school that saw a decrease so even without Slade TSU would probably hav3e seen an enrollment increase.

if she is guilty of misuse of funds i hope she does time for it. unfortunately, public/ corporate officials are rarely punished in the same manner as the rest of us. the students of TSU deserve someone who can lead by example not criminal activity.
ReplyDeleteU.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, "Let us not be known as the university that topples people."
ReplyDeletehow about, "Let us not be known as the university that rewards criminal behavior."
and she's an elected official!
Well as a African American myself, as well as practically every African American I know feels they have picked the wrong person to support. I don't believe the local leaders are representing the opinion of most African Americans in this. At least not from what I have been hearing.
ReplyDeleteI believe they are supporting Dr.
ReplyDeleteSlade because she is black...bottom line. Yes, she may have done good things for the University but that does not excuse her behavior with school funds. It is already a struggle for African Americans to receive financial assistance when we need it, now she is really making it difficult for us all. Some of our people can not be trusted already, now what do you think people will say?...none of them can be trusted!
