GOOD OLD FASHIONED TEXAS JUSTICE: SHOULD IT APPLY IN THIS CASE????

LAMAR: I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IF I HAD TO SAVE MY FAMILY!!!

When hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans 25 year old Lamar Inglus had one thought on his mind, saving his family. Inglus tells The Insite after scavaging through the crescent city for nearly a week in flooded waters with no help on the way he had one choice. Steal a car. And that's exactly what the father of two did to save the lives of his children and 11 other family members. He says with the help of a New Orleans police officer he was able to commandeer a SUV and get his family to safety in Houston. Heroic? It's what dozens of people did in New Orleans when the buses didn't show up to evacuate them from the flooded city. But after arriving in Houston Inglus says he parked the car. It sat at a parking place in the Bayou city for almost a month until he was told someone was trying to steal it. So he decided to move it and with the luck of the draw he was stopped by Houston police. He was eventually charged with theft of a motor vehicle. And on Friday May 12th he goes on trial here in Houston. He faces two years in prison on the state jail felony. Inglus says if he had to do it all over again, he would to save 13 family members. His attorney Warren Fitzgerald plans to fight the case. The question I have for you all is should he get a pass for extenuating circumstances or did he break the law and face prosecution like everyone else????

    Isaih,

this is obviously a case of lumping all the evacuees into the crime spree that hit Houston. And any evacuee who is arrested or charged will get the toughest punishment in order to take them off the streets. This is not fair and I'm glad you're bringing this to the attention of the public.

I concur with the anonymous post above. If what the evacuee claims to be true - saving his family, then he shouldn't be charged. Heck, if I was in his situation, I'd do the same thing.

why did he hang on to the car an entire month after stealing it?

That's a good question to ask. I asked the same thing. Perhaps he could have call anonymously (just as I post anonymous) and informed the proper authorities of the car and his circumstance without identifying himself. Or he probably just wasn't thinking... iono!

  5. Sounds to me like he had the car for a month and got caught driving it.
