IS THE NAME "YELLOW" MAGAZINE OFFENSIVE TO YOU????

SOME SAY THE NAME OF THE MAG GOES TOO FAR!!!!

The Insite, on rare occasions, has missed the point and that's what happened in this particular case. It has come to my attention some Asian Americans here in Houston are finding "Yellow Magazine" very offensive. I talked with an unnamed source Monday morning and the Asian American said he found the name of the magazine degrading at best. He said "there are other names they could've used to describe it." He wasn't the first. I talked to a female of Asian decent who found the magazine title offensive. The publishers, also Asians, apparently felt the magazine's title was acceptable. So the question I have for you...Is the title "Yellow Magazine" offensive from your perspective. And by the way, this is no reflection on the wonderful ladies who grace the May issue cover. We'd like to hear your opinion on this issue...

Thank you Insite for pointing this out. My Asian family, 3 generations, found this incredibly offensive. Sure, yellow is a color associated with royalty in China. But, what comes to mind first... are discriminatory, biased racial slurs. If the creators and backers of the free publication don't see that, then they are way out of touch! The people on the cover should have taken a stand and said no.

Isiah, everyone is going to think it is offensive if they are offended or looking to be offended. It is like the "N" word. It is okay for us to say it but if someone else says it outside our race then it is dead wrong! I think that is a problem and we need to stop using that word period along with using terms like "Yellow!" Is that for Asians, Light Skinned African Americans, or someone who has a super tan??? You got me on that one! But to answer the question, yes it is going to be offensive because someone was hurt by the term.

I'm the type who gets offended when I see something that might be considered derogatory and/or discriminatory, but this one doesn't bother me at all. I didn't associate the name of the magazine with anything insulting.

By the way, why is Jan Jeffcoat on the cover?

We are a little too sensitive these days especially when it somes to race, HOWEVER yellow is sometimes used as a slur against asians, I'm not sure it was the best choice.

Even if it is being a little sensitive, if it hurts someone or degrades someone then it is wrong.

If you were the one they were degrading then you wouldn't like it but since it doesn't effect you it is being to sensitive!

As for trying to link "Yellow" and "Ebony," those two terms are not even in the same calls. I have never heard someone being hurt by the term "Ebony" have you???

As pointed out in the last Yellow blog the term "yellow" and "N______(word we do not speak of)" were mant to be mean and malicious. So it would be like having all the black women in town on a magazine with the title N________(wwdnso). Ebony is not offensive, that is why the name was chosen, it is a beautiful wood known for it's stregnth and longevity. Yellow is supposed to describe an Asian persons skin color, though they aren't even yellow unless they are lacking iron.

I don't know why people are so sensitive to the term "yellow". Ok it is a term that used to describe Asian during WWII. It used to mean slur or slang but if we are embracing the term then it is no longer offensive to us Asian. They will have to find another derrogative word for us. Soon or later they will run out of words to slander us. We are Asians and we are proud to be Yellow. And why is it ok for white people to be called white man or white boy white woman etc.. but it is not ok to accept us Asian American as Yellow boy, I have many friends who are blacks would rather be called black than African Americans. No Yellow Magazine is not offensive to me, infact i am proud that there is a magazine that represent Asian Americans with talents, beauty, and success.
