OFFICERS SAY HURTT DOESN'T KNOW HOUSTON...
The Houston Police Officers Union held a press conference Wednesday and made it quite clear they want Police Chief Harold Hurtt out. The union says Hurtt has dropped the ball when it comes to fighting crime, communicating with his officers and showing he's committed to the city of Houston. Hans Marticiuc, president of the union, says they are sending out surveys to
police officers in the field to grade Hurtt's tenure so far at HPD. Hurtt arrived in the city back in 2004. He was appointed by Mayor Bill White. Union officials say Hurtt focuses too mudch on cosmetics like beards and if an officer has a tattoo. And Marticuic says Hurtt is using Katrina evacuees as a scapegoat for the rising crime problem. He says crime was up in Houston well before the Louisiana residents arrived on Houston's door step. Union members also say the chief is rarely in town during the weekend. They say he constantly travels back to Phoenix, Arizona where he was chief before Houston. They say that's an indicator he hasn't planted roots in the city. HPD responded with the press release above. Click it to enlarge and read the chief's side of the story...

The best part of the story was that Hurtt couldn't respond to the allegations because he'd left on vacation - to Arizona.
