THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT EXPLORING WAYS TO SAVE MONEY!

OVERTIME COULD BE A TARGET ACCORDING TO GARY!

Union officials say it's time to comb the books to try and stave off cutbacks at the Houston Police Department.

This comes after Mayor Annise Parker says all departments should tighten their belts or face possible furloughs. HPOU President Gary Blankinship confirms he met with HPD's administration this morning to find ways to save money.

One of the ideas is to reduce the yearly continuing education requirement for the 5,000 member force.

Blankenship says that could save the department $10 million a year in overtime. But that was only one of the suggestions tossed around.
