Evolution of Gospel celebrated Gospel Music Heritage Month with a star-studded, foot-stomping event that told the story of Gospel music through narration and song, beginning at the Middle Passage and winding up with highlights of contemporary Gospel music.
Special performances were given by gospel artists Richard Smallwood, Kirk Franklin, Shawn McLemore, Marvin Sapp, Kathy Taylor, The Washington Performing Arts Society’s Men and Women of the Gospel Choir under the direction of Stanley Thurston and , 7 Sons of Soul.
During the evening, special recognition and awards were given to Cathy Hughes and Dr. Bobby Jones for their contributions to the preservation of Gospel music.
First Lady Michelle Obama was also given an award and special recognition, however she was unable to attend the event.
The unforgettable evening was co-hosted by Winston Chaney and Jacquie Gales-Webb and took place, Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 6:30p.m. at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Davis, CBC Sponsor The Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee, Concert Co-Chair, Verity Records’ James “Jazzy” Jordan, and Washington, D.C. Host Committee, Ron L. Magnus.
