HOUSTON'S OWN MARY BENTON GETS A MAJOR PROMOTION WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS: REGIONAL DIRECTOR!

I am pleased to announce the appointments of Regional Directors for Regions I, II, and V. Joining the Board of Directors from Region I, will be Mara Schiavocampo, NBC News Correspondent; Region II, Corey Dade, NPR National Correspondent; and Region V, Mary Benton, Reporter, KPRC-TV (NBC Houston). These three individuals have long track records of dedication and leadership both locally and nationally, and will be great assets to this administration and to the association. Mary Benton
Responsible for the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
  
Mary Benton is an award-winning journalist who knows Texas and politics like the back of her hand.
  
This Texas native was born and raised in Harlingen, in the Rio Grande Valley. Mary received her bachelor degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. While at the university, she took a special interest in her government and political science classes and in the  student government organization on campus. She also kept a watchful eye on the political arena unfolding just down the street from the UT campus at the Texas State Capitol.
  
Mary is a past recipient of the "School Bell Award" given by the Texas State 
Teachers Association for education reporting.

She has been named Houston's Favorite TV reporter by the Houston Association of
 
Black Journalists, Houston's Best Reporter by the Houston Press
 Newspaper, a Houston YMCA Minority Achiever and in 
2011 was selected by Rolling Out Magazine as one of Houston's Top 25 Women.

Mary is the current President of the Houston Association of Black Journalists.
