JOLANDA JONES: TWO UNIONS SAY IT'S TIME TO GO AND AN OPPONENT WAITING IN THE WINGS!

Jolanda Jones

It is no surprise there is bad blood between one Houston City Council Member and two powerful unions in Houston.

That council member is Jolanda Jones and the groups she doesn't seem to see eye to eye with are the Houston Police Officers' Union and the Houston Firefighters Union.

The Insite has learned both groups have to decided to endorse a candidate who's running against Jones for the at-large council 5 position she holds.

That candidate is Lauri Robinson.  An accountant who's decided to throw her hat into the political ring.

Ray Hunt with HPOU confirms his union, which endorsed Jones last cycle, is going with Robinson this time.

To understand why both groups are endorsing Jones' opponent you have to know the history between the council member and the unions.

Jones has become public enemy #1 with the police union after she passed out a flier warning Houstonians not to talk with cops if they're stopped.  This happened at the height of the Chad Holley beating case.

The firefighters' union first became upset with Jones when she defended embattled female firefighter Jane Draycott.  Draycott and another female firefighter were the victims of racist and sexist graffiti.

Jones also had a run in with the president of the firefighters' union Jeff Caynon.  He claimed Jones called him a 'house negro' during a lunch meeting at a Houston restaurant.  Their rocky relationship doesn't end there.  Jones was also investigated and cleared by the city's Office of Inspector General after she was accused of cursing some Houston firefighters at a local firehouse.  Jones provided a video tape of the encounter that cleared her.

In the meantime, The Insite has learned the police union will begin its negative mailer campaign against Jones Wednesday.

Campaign literature telling voters why Jones is not the one for the job could arrive in your mail as early as Thursday.

The Insite is hoping to get a comment from Jones about the lack of an endorsement and the letters going out in the mail against her.

Jones is currently serving her second term on Houston's City Council.

  1. But Jolanda was on TV and she is a big deal! It's not fair, she should get that shower placed in her office and reelected!
