Harris County Judge Jim 'Uncross Your Arms' Wallace |
For the last week I've had the chance to sit in the courtroom of Harris County Criminal Judge Jim Wallace. He's presiding over the trial of famed former hand surgeon Dr. Michael Brown. Brown is accused of assaulting his soon to be ex-wife Rachel Brown.
But during the trial Judge Wallace has had to whip several people into shape when they approach his bench.
Early last week a Houston reporter was admonished by the veteran judge for snapping pictures with a cellphone in court and posting them on Twitter.
When that reporter was called up before Judge Wallace the journalist had her arms folded. Judge Wallace immediately told her to uncross her arms.
Initially, I thought it was aimed at just that reporter.
However, on Monday a prosecutor came before the judge's bench. He too had his arms folded. What did the judge say with a stern look on his face? Uncross your arms.
I'm not quite sure what the judge has against folded or crossed arms, but you've been warned. Don't go before him with your arms in any position but pointing straight down or you will be called out in front of the entire court.
My arms are right by my side Judge!
I was always taught that folded arms are a sign of a person not willing to listen or has a closed mind.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the judge addressing both of them that way if he read it the same way I do.
When standing before an official or other authority figure, my typical stance is an "at ease" military type position, with hands clasped behind my back - that typically is a safe bet.
