The Insite attended the second Martin Luther King Day Parade in downtown Houston on Monday. As many of you know there are two competing parades. The first was too early for me so I attended the second (Black Heritage Foundation) one at 2 pm and received a certificate of appreciation. But I was really shocked at how short this event was. It lasted all of 20 minutes and then the city street sweepers were already in action. There were about 20 or so cars, one marching band, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee lead the parade and an Elvis impersonator wrapped up the event to remember Dr. Martin Luther King. There were about 200 people watching the event from the sidewalks. As I walked near the end of the route one woman looked very disgusted. She asked me if that was the end of the parade. I said yes mam. She rolled her eyes at me and said "Shit, I spent $5 on parking for this." And that says it all!
We should have gone together we could have saved money on the gas. This was my first Houston MLK Parade and I was so so disappointed. I took my kids out in the rain and cold for this and thought, "What the hell"!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's okay I would do it again just to confirm the divide in the African American/Black Community.
Only in Texas I swear only in Texas...
We don't get down like that in the boot.
I understand that traditionally a lot of black people like to celebrate MLK day by shopping at the Galleria and other retailers in the Houston area. Sounds like more fun than watching a parade in the rain.
ReplyDeleteNobody told me that we were supposed to be at the Galleria. Isiah, whip out the black card baby, we're going shopping!!!

Hilarious! You should have gone to the first parade which had floats, bands, marching JROTC groups, fire trucks... it's worth it to get up a couple hours early.

You should have attended the first parade. Bigger crowds more parade participants.
ReplyDeleteAnd you could have snapped a pic of Jerome, Wendy and Mary B.
Where was FOX's float???
I still don't know why the two groups just can't "get along" and have one parade to honor MLK. This bickering is against what MLK was preaching.
ReplyDeleteUntil there is a parade in Houston that is "in it" for the beiefs of Dr. King there will only be piss poor attempts. MLK day should not be seen as a holiday for black people only if it is going to be relevent.
ReplyDeleteThe second parade should never have been. Pathetic.
the black heritage society didn't want to give up their parade, even though all their sponsors had pulled out and they only had 5 days to throw a parade together... I guess it really showed out there... how sad.
ReplyDeleteAnything - ANYTHING- with the BHS name on it is going to be screwed up. Case in point:
ReplyDeleteDuring the Superbowl festivities at the GRB, the BHS was having an event in which the promised "stars" did not appear because they were not paid. The were going to go on with their "event" anyway but they did not have the money to pay the off-duty officers for security. When the officers were leaving, the city ordered them to stay and paid them city overtime rate so the BHS would not be embrassed. (As if being a part of the BHS is not embarassing enough.)
