HE ALSO SAYS THE COMMUNITY MUST LEND A HAND!
Isiah,
Thank you for your diligence in calling attention to a very serious issue
occurring in one of Houston's historic neighborhoods. On January 29, 2008, I hosted the first in a series of "Community Conversation" Town Hall meetings to address the blight that has plagued the Frenchtown area. During the meeting, community members, church leaders, HPD, Solid Waste, the Neighborhood Protection Department and myself were able to come together to formulate a plan of action to address:
* Prostitution
* Illegal dumping
* Poor street conditions
* Abandoned homes
* Weeded lots
As a follow-up to the concerns addressed at the meeting, I have asked HPD,
Neighborhood Protection and Public Works Department to formulate a
comprehensive plan by the 15th of February for the Frenchtown area. I am
also working on a proposed ordinance that will hold absentee landowners and
motel owners responsible for the condition of their land as well as the type
of tenants allowed to rent.
However, I must stress how imperative it is for the community of Frenchtown
to take an active role in the improvement of their community. This
includes large and small tasks that can make a drastic improvement such as
putting trash out on specified trash collection days to reduce the large
dump piles that create blight. Remember, "Silence is not Safety," if
undesirable activity is witnessed call the police or 311. We must send a
message that criminal behavior will no longer be tolerated in Frenchtown.
Aggressive civic engagement from the entire Frenchtown community will be the
action necessary to restore Frenchtown.
Sincerely
Jarvis Johnson
It is about time that he look into cleaning up Frenchtown. It is horrible.
ReplyDeleteI agree that instead of calling 311 to let the city do all the work, the neighbors should get together on weekends and clean up their own neighborhoods. I hate it when people want other people to take of their community.
ReplyDeleteLike I said before Jarvis is a great community and I don't live near the district. People need to step up and pitch in. Im just surprised that none of the pastors in the area haven't been preaching this to their memebrs about the state of their community.
ReplyDeleteI sure miss the days when his predessesor, Carol Galloway Mims, went out and took the pictures herself and called the problem to the attention of the press, the community and her colleagues. And then arranged for probationers and the community to clean up these areas.
ReplyDeleteGalloway really cared, she actually got her hands dirty and worked long, sometimes weekend, hours cleaning the communities she loved and served.
But I am also glad to see Mr. Johnson doing what what he can.

Clarice, I'm sure you do miss all the step-n-fetch, yessir mayor whatever you say mayor, shuck-n-jive'n, tap danc'n antics of Galloway. So does Bill White.
ReplyDeleteThank God her daughter didn't win.
Mammy!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Jarvis is a great person. He really has his constituents needs at the center of his heart. I am looking for great things to come from him. I will also awaiting on more information on more details on the State of Community. Keep up the good work. Keep taking little steps and soon you will get there!!
ReplyDeleteSigned, Jarvis Johnson.
ReplyDeleteJJ business is located in Frenchtown, why would he let it get so trashy. He seem to be yessir steppin and fecthin with Mr Mayor too. He is all talk and no delivery of services to his community. He said "You tell the heads of departments your problems, not him, who we elected. I was at the Hester house meeting and we have to let the city official know what we needs. I quess they don't have NO respect for Mr. JJ. Seem like he can't take care of the problems by himself. He needs all of us to help him get the problems taken care of in our neighborhood. Mrs Galloway took care of the problems without us calling and talking to the Directors. She even tour the community and pointed out eyesores with both Mayors. I know because they came down my street and talk with the neighbors along with Mrs Punch and cleaned up Frenchtown. Ask Mrs Punch who live in Frenchtown! Sorry about the comparison when dealing with maturity and youth who don't quite understand the game of politics, and know how to get thing done like us with wisdom of the system. I am proudly 55 now! Glory be to God for living in these times, and looking forward to 65!!!! Be Blessed all you bloggers. You need to know most houses in Frenchtown are now renter properties. The landlord don't care.
