SHOULD T-SHIRTS PROMOTE A COUGH SYRUP THAT HAS BEEN USED BY SOME AS A DRUG?
An Insite reader sent me a picture after reading about rapper Pimp C's death. He died as a result of a deadly mix of codeine cough syrup and a pre-existing medical condition. That Insite reader said we as African Americans haven't learned our lesson even after the death of several high profile rappers. That lesson is not to promote the (cough) syrup or purple stuff. The reader apparently found this guy on a local website in a purple shirt that's glorifying the syrup. What do you think about someone who wears a t-shirt that celebrates drug use that has taken many lives including high profile entertainers. Is the Insite reader right for claiming some African Americans never learn?

ReplyDeletesome ppl never learn. white folk included.
ReplyDeleteNo I do not think the banning of said shirts will diminish the use of the product. There are weed shirts that have been around for decades (okay I began noticing them in the 80s, but you get my drift). It at no point swayed me to smoke weed. Once upon a time there were those "Johnson" T-shirts. That eluded to the size of a man's fallice, and at no time did it make me want to jump on dudes. Bottom line: they were doing the drug long before someone had the audacity to make a shirt promoting it. Don't hate the entrepro-negro, hate the ignorant-negro.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Isiah's question, "What do you think about someone who wears a t-shirt that celebrates drug use that has taken many lives including high profile entertainers?".....
ReplyDeleteMy perception is that they are ignorant and that they are thumbing their nose at authority (since they aren't promoting the LEGAL use of it). We (blacks/whites/browns/etc) have embraced this THUG culture. Family, morals, responsibility and doing the right thing have been replaced by money, materialism and drug culture. It's hip to be perceived as HARD and to glorify one's criminal exploits.
So when I see this I perceive an ignorant person, both morally and education-wise. They may not be, but this is mine and many people's first impression. Same as when I see them sporting the pants hanging off their A$$ (show some self-respect) and tattoos on the neck. Not that I dislike tattoos, just that if one has a tattoo on the side of their neck, odds are they are not a doctor, business person, or productive member of society (there might be a few out there). This is not a race issue b/c I see this off Jensen, as well as in The Woodlands Mall.
Should they sell them? Not sure. They sell a whole lot worse things out there. Like those small flowers in the glass tube, errrrrr crack pipe, at the corner stores all around the city.
I am not sure why most media outlets are saying that he overdosed or something. I definitely don’t advocate the drinking of "lean", "syrup", or whatever, but facts are facts. Pimp had sleep apnea, the same ailment that took away a great Eagle named Reggie White.
ReplyDeleteIf someone wants to wear the shirt go ahead, but when you are treated like a drug user or an uneducated idiot, don't get mad. You are asking for it. We know anyone with a real job would not wear something like that. Sorry professional rappers and drug dealers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for listening to me Isiah when I said they still haven't learned. I have grown up around "syrup" and even if they weren't famous it still killed people I knew. I am a college student away from home and I use your website to keep abreast...so again thank you for listening to me.
ReplyDeleteLearn what? This is America people. We have that right. Gosh, If some wants to wear a shirt that promotes anything. Anyone who choses to do something stupid has that right. I would never and would break my kid in half if they did so. This is where personal responsibility comes in.
ReplyDeleteParent's be the role model for your children, communicate with them and stop trying to police the legal actions of others. "We fought for freedom and in many ways are still fighting" THIS IS AMERICA
It's not illegal to be stupid.
