Houston Independent School District Board of Trustee Member (District IV) Paula M. Harris in conjunction with HISD Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra, Robert Lee Frost Elementary School Principal Elbert White and numerous community leaders announced plans to construct a new $16-million state-of-the-art school for Robert Lee Frost Elementary in the Sunnyside / South Park community.
One of 24 new schools planned as part of the more than $1-billion school construction and repair program that includes $805 million in bonds approved by the voters November 6, Frost Elementary is a one of HISD’s best schools, rated as “Recognized” by the Texas Education Agency for its academic performance and enjoys an 88% pass rate in math and science scores.
Currently, the deteriorating 45-year-old school building is plagued with a number of issues including: wooden posts holding the roof up; air-conditioning system being old, rusty, and inefficient; parts of the building sinking; windows being held in place by caulk; and wet areas near the portable educational buildings that never dry.
According to Trustee Harris, “Frost Elementary stands out as an excellent example of our neighborhood schools providing the highest levels of education that is equal to or better than the education that can be found anywhere in our district or in private institutions. In the African-American and other minority communities, I totally understand the unwavering focus over the past years regarding program and instructional equity within the District. That is why as your representative on the HISD Board of Trustees, I will continue to work with Dr. Saavedra, my fellow board members, elected officials, key stakeholder groups and the community at-large to ensure Frost Elementary and all of other schools enjoy the same level of attention and required resources necessary to be as successful as other schools.”
