WHY IS THE HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TRYING TO KEEP SECRETS?

HISD: WE DON'T THINK IT SHOULD BE PUBLIC WHAT WE GIVE TEACHERS FOR BONUSES!

Apparently, officials with the Houston Independent School District are telling the public it's none of your business. The district has asked the attorney general's office for a ruling on keeping pay bonuses given to teachers and administrators a secret. Last year the district released details on the perks given to some deserving teachers and staff in the system. This latest controversy comes after the local newspaper, The Houston Chronicle requested information about who was getting what amount. However, HISD is claiming this year the bonuses are equivalent to performance evaluations therefore it is a personell and private matter. Private despite the very public funds used to operate the school district. Should the school district be able to keep secrets from the public by withholding this information from the news media and the community? The Insite would love to hear your comments on this matter!

  1. I agree that the amount of the bonuses to specific teachers should be private information. It's nobody else's business how much money Ms. Smith or Mr. Jones makes. They are not elected officials, they're just private citizens performing a job that happens to be for a public organization.

I do agree that it should be public knowledge how much bonus money is being paid out, and how much teachers are getting, but only in a non-specific way. Don't identify specific teachers, but you can point out that a 20 year veteran at a middle school that received a $5000 bonus, or some such description.

I am a teacher and my paycheck is not your business. Isiah Carey, I'll post my check and any bonuses if you'll agree to do the same and every reporter in this town does so also.

That last post was very rude. But O do think these bonuses should be public. The school district is public. An open society is a free society. Isiah please remove the previous anonymous comment. It's rude.

Why don't you tell us what you make Isiah? Teachers are not public figures and what little they make does not serve the public to know.
