The ripple of effects from the earthquake in China have been felt as far away as Houston.
To God Be The Glory Sports had been preparing since February to host one of the top teams from the Chinese Basketball Association for a 10-day visit to Houston to be a part of the building dedication ceremonies that was scheduled for May 24. Instead, the Zhejiang Guangsha will have to re-schedule their trip to the USA due to the earthquake that hit China unexpectedly.
“We are greatly saddened by what has happened in China, and our sympathies go out to our friends and associates there that have been directly affected by this natural disaster,” said Cyril White, founder and director of TGBTG Sports.
The team was set to arrive from China on May 23 to be a part of the May 24 building dedication ceremonies. Now, the team is planning to visit Houston in mid-July to early August to train at the newly built To God be the Glory Sports complex.
“No one can control when these natural disasters occur, so we all have to re-arrange plans when these things happen,” said Li Ying Wang, team representative of the Zhejiang Guangsha. “We are thankful to TGBTG Sports for their understanding and working with us to re-schedule our trip to the USA.”
As a result of the teams' visit being re-scheduled, TGBTG Sports will push its building dedication ceremonies back to a later time. The group may host a team of the top rookies from China from June 6-10 when Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman will train the young players as part of the Rockets' cooperation agreements with the CBA.
“It is important to us that we have some strong representation from the Chinese Basketball
Association at our gym when we dedicate the building,” said White, who has taken American teams to China for exhibition games since 2000. “They have invested in TGBTG Sports in many different ways, so it is not a hard decision for us to postpone building dedication ceremonies until we can include some of our strongest partners”
