SOME SAY THE HARRIS COUNTY PANEL DROPPED THE BALL!
A jury in Houston has ordered life in prison for an illegal immigrant from Mexico convicted in the 2006 shooting death of a policeman.
Jurors returned the penalty Tuesday for 34-year-old Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez.
Jurors on May 8 found Quintero-Perez guilty of capital murder in the slaying of Houston Officer Rodney Johnson.
The 40-year-old lawman was killed during a traffic stop. Johnson was shot several times after arresting Quintero-Perez for driving without a license.
Records show Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after being convicted of indecency with a child. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Quintero-Perez.
I am typically against the death penalty, however I must admit I have ambivalent feelings about this one.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as one who has had a loved one murdered, I don't know if I'm 100% in favor of the death penalty. Murder is a tragedy regardless...but punishing the murderer with a death sentence will not bring back the loved one who was lost.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the jury dropped the ball. It could have been worse - they could have bought that bull corn the defense was selling about this man being mentally impaired. When we analyze the worst case scenario at least time will be served.
I believe we need to bring forth stricter laws for law enforcement officials killed in the line of duty. These men and women are doing a job that not everyone is capable of - they really do put their lives on the line so if someone has the audacity to murder one of them...then without a doubt punishment should be the ultimate without any possibility of parole.
Why does this cold blooded murderer
ReplyDeleteget to live when officer Johnson is
dead? The bleeding heart jury should
be ashamed of themselves! GRRRRR
It must have been all white folks on the jury panel, because they do not valued a black man's life as much.
ReplyDeleteA black man's life is of value, when these white folks juries are sending to work in a jail or prison.
I guess now Mexico will still agree to send illegals who commit crimes in the US and flees to Mexico back to the US since this illegal did not give to previous convicted felon the death sentence as he gave Brother Rodney Johnson.
Hate to tell you this, but as someone who covered the trial - it was NOT "ALL WHITE FOLKS ON THE JURY", as stated earlier by an anonymous poster.
ReplyDeleteIn fact there were several african americans and hispanics, and some whites on that jury.
Wow previous poster.. the jury who sent the white guy who drug that poor black man to death in Jasper was all white. This one, however, was not.
ReplyDeleteWhat?
ReplyDeleteWhy does this have to be black and white? Officer Rodney Johnson's true color was BLUE, He was a protector of the city and I feel this jury let the rest of his brothers in BLUE down by returning this verdict.
ReplyDeleteLike it or not the world we live in is Black and White. I don't think it will ever change.
ReplyDeleteOfficer Rodney Johnsons loss to his family and the city of Houston is an immeasurable. The previous blogger is right...Officer Johnson did a service that many of us wouldn't or couldn't do. The penalty for disrupting that flow should be stiff and clear. Mess with our public servants...suffer the consequences. I don't think its about black and white so much as it is about having an appreciation for the OVERALL protection and safety we receive as citizens from law enforcement. We have to show that they matter to us and that we respect the work that they do FOR us. Though I am not a strong advocate for the death penalty, I felt a bit empty by the verdict. I hope that Officer Johnsons family finds peace and solace in remembering what kind of person he was in life, to his community and his family and not give credence to the murderer. May he rot for a lifetime...
ReplyDeleteTo ghostrider; the hell with that "we are all blue bullshit you talkin" Policeman are not all blue... just as in many police departments, we all blue when it comes to this type of injustice, but when it comes to the good ole boy's, well then you are white cops, black cops and brown cops.
ReplyDeleteHe was an illegal child molester and now a cop killer. He had absolutely no remorse at the trial. I think that I actually saw him, smirk at one point. The life sentence send the wrong message to these punks. What happen to the "Texas Justice" that has sent a record number of minorities to the death chamber. I am usually against the death penalty, someone who kills a police officer in cold blood should expect to die.y prayers are with his family.
