GARCIA ON TRIAL FOR FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH!
Jury selection began Wednesday in West Baton Rouge Parish in the first-degree murder trial of Michael Garcia. Garcia came to court early Wednesday morning surrounded by heavy security.
He's accused of killing Matthew Millican and raping Millican's fiancée near a Port Allen gas station in 2006. A total of 108 potential jurors arrived at the West Baton Rouge Parish Courthouse.
Prosecutors say they're confident in their case. "There is a, as I'd like to determine, an avalanche of evidence we will present to the jury and as I've said before, Jim, in my opinion, if the death penalty were a tailor-made suit, it's custom-made to fit Mr. Michael Garcia," says Tony Clayton.
Security is tight at the courthouse. Deputies and cameras are keeping a close watch on everyone who enters the building. West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes explains why he feels all this extra security is needed. "This is a very high-profile case that we're bringing to trial to justice right now and this is the first time we had a first-degree murder trial in over 30 years, as long as I've been in law enforcement, so it's my responsibility for security of the inmate and public."
Jury selection should last at least a week.
