Council Member James RodriguezStatement on Demolition of Mt Carmel Missionary Baptist Church
"I recognize and respect the historical
value of this church and the countless
other buildings throughout our neighborhoods,
especially 4th Ward/Freedman's Town. Unfortunately,
the instability of Mount Carmel was a safety hazard
for my constituents. Therefore, it was overwhelmingly
determined by structural engineers, the Fire Department
and myself that it was in the community's best interest
to demolish the structure. Demolition is scheduled to
start this evening.
I intend to meet with area ministers, our City of Houston Legal Department, Neighborhood
Protection and the Fire Department to craft a more effective
ordinance that will allow us to address these matters in a more
proactive manner. This church may have been salvageable years ago,
but it should not have been allowed to get to this point."
I understand the historical attachment to this church but c'mon,
ReplyDeleteit's falling down and is a safety
