BRINGING UNITY AND HOPE TO THE YOUNG OFFENDERS!
Rapper Trae Tha Truth has long had a dream. It is to reach out to the inmates in the Texas penal system. That dream is being realized. He recruited fellow Houston rapper Slim Thug and they began the Prison Tour. The two entertainers had the help of former inmate now advocate Rosie Ruiz. The Insite caught up with them performing at the Clements Unit near Lake Jackson. It was there where Trae found himself shocked at his audience. In the crowd were inmates as young as 14 years old. They were teenagers tried as adult sentenced to time behind bars in an adult facility. But the offenders loved the performance. Some of them like Shine and Enslave also performed for their guests of honor. The young people say Trae and Slim Thug brought a sense of unity to those who have been splintered for various reasons. ReplyDeleteWow. It is nothing short of amazing how cold hearted people are. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that each of the commenters went to church each and every Sunday. I know all of the artists that performed at Clemens personally and was present at that show. Those 'prisoners' were nothing short of babies. Our legal system has, in it's wisdom, deemed not one of them old enough to have sex but each of them old enough to sentence as an adult. As a white, educated and world travelled female, I couldn't help but notice that out of the 90 or so 'kids' in that audience, there were but 4 white kids. Seems to me that with the privatization of the prison system, and the so-called war on drugs, the good ol' USA has found a round about way of re-legallizing slavery - and you are getting them younger and younger.
ReplyDeleteThat concert gave those kids the chance to be kids again, and forget where they were for an hour - and it was beautiful to watch. Trae and Slim have found an amazing way to give back and the message they imparted was - If I can turn my life around and do something with it, so can you - someone needs to tell those children that not everyone deems them trash and worth nothing. There is still reason to hope. Great job guys. Keep it up.

ReplyDeleteI am truely dissappointed in you Isiah. This is NOT positive in any way for our youth to be seen or portrayed. These "thug" rappers just use this kind of tour as giving them more "street cred". And you just bought into it and gave them more. If you really want to do something for the people, try focusing more on the way Sheriff Tommy Thomas abuses ALL people and help replace him. You can do better than this Isiah.

Yeah, Yeah do the crime do the time blah, blah and blah....Think of all those who did NOT do what they are there for, the stories out of Dallas of the recent release of wrongly convicted should let you know that we have a serious issue with our penal system!!!!!!!!!
But to know that someone cared enough to make this a battle worth fighting for and won :I applaud the success of Trae and Slim for taking on this task opposite of the path that the world would like them to take, the youth alone of today needs to know that we care; and Trae and Slim have completed a small portion of this long task yet to come!!!
Keep up the great work and continue to give back Trae that is what will really make u THA TRUTH....and again Thank U Isiah for finding this a very note worthy story and I look forward to seeing more maybe you could cover the entire prison tour if they do this again.....don't ever loose HOPE it is all that we have!!!!!

Big ups to Slim and Trae... And to those who think Slim and Trae are not good role models for young people, please point me to the address of your youth outreach program.

Where all one has to do is attende regularly, try to pay the slightest amount of attention in class, act as if you are trying to learn, and complete an asignment on time, every now and then, and you are "given" a diploma and basic job skills. And it dont cost a dime.

It could not be possible, i guess that the reason that the court is full of minorities is that they tend to be the ones without a license, registration, or any number of other traffic code violations? Gee, I dont see a lot of no-gottees or cracked windshields or out of date stickers in River Oaks. But that could not POSSIBLY have anything to do with why minorities are in court more then whites. (ANOTHER huge eye roll)

ReplyDeleteActually, I am a part of this...every stinking miserable day dealing with the people of this cess-pool of a sanctuary city. When i pull a car over at 3 in the morning off of Dan and Hearshy with realy dark tinted windows, guess what? I can tell what color the person driving is. It's immposible. But, statisticly speaking, it will be a black male and he will either have warrants, a gun, or dope in the car. Thats a FACT. In River Oaks, I will not pull over anyone at that time because they are all in bed because they all have JOBS. THAT'S a FACT. If I pull over someone on AIRLINE, it will be a Mexican or El Salvadorean, or Guatamalan, none of them being in this counry legaly, nor bothoring to ever have learned English, get a license, or get insurance. THAT'S a FACT. People tend to hang out in neighborhoods that others that look and act like them do. So, a car pulled over off of Airline will be "of hispanic descent", while one pulled over in the 5th ward will be black, and likewise, If you are lucky enough to find a person that violates traffic laws in river oaks, they will be white. Thats NOT racial profiling. You clearly have NO idea what racial profiling is. But then again, you clearly have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

But, do tell of your vast experience and knowledge of what police work realy is since you saw the latest episode of CSI and COPS.
