IT'S GETTING GREAT REVIEWS!Another smartphone is joining Mountain View Internet giant Google's Android army: Taiwan phone manufacturer HTC's Evo 4G debuted Friday on Sprint's network.
The phone costs $299.99 with a two-year contract, but Sprint is offering a $100 rebate that brings the price down to $199.99.
The Evo 4G is getting good reviews. Tech columnist Larry Magid, for example, is describing it as "the world's best smartphone" — at least until Apple releases its next-generation iPhone as expected next week.
The phone can be used on Sprint's 3G and 4G wireless networks. The carrier plans to offer 4G service in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York and other markets later this year. Sprint 4G is already available in 33 markets, including Las Vegas and Chicago.
Sprint is pitching its unlimited data plans for the phone, which offers features such as video chat. By contrast, wireless carrier AT&T announced this week that it no longer will offer unlimited plans for the iPhone, other smartphones and mobile devices such as Apple's iPad.
"Unlimited plans offer new Evo users the flexibility to use the device as they desire without any worry about exceeding a predetermined limit," Carrie MacGillivray of market researcher IDC said in a statement provided by Sprint.
Service plans including voice and data start at about $80 a month, according to Sprint.
