TIME TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH IN HOUSTON!

THE BRUNCH, MARKET PLACE, AND PARADE!

On Saturday, June 19, 2010 Independence Heights will be hosting a History Day Celebration and Juneteenth Parade. This event is intended to be an annual event celebrating the beautiful history of the community and honor the Juneteenth holiday. This year, we are anticipating a final approval for Independence Heights to be declared a historic district. There are many things happening on this day including the following:

Jubilee Brunch

As a kick off to the event, we will host a "Jubilee Brunch" starting at 10 am Saturday morning. The brunch will consist of local talent and the unveiling of a short video dedicated to the history of Independence Heights. At the brunch, we will also pay tribute to our community elders. Tickets for the brunch are $5 for children and seniors and $8 for others. You may reserve your ticket at anytime beginning June 1, 2010. Seating is limited, so reserve your space early.

Main Street Marketplace

The Main Street Marketplace will consist of churches, schools and businesses along the Main Street selling goods, sharing information, displaying history and participating in the festivities. Currently, each church along Main Street has agreed to participate. They are selling old fashioned items like teacakes, popcorn, bbq, seafood and more. The Barber Shop is selling haircuts for $5 and we are decorating Main Street like an old fashioned small town festival. There will be a photo contest, history museum, bake off and many more exciting "ole time" festivities. The marketplace is scheduled to open from 11 am to 5pm.

Juneteenth Parade

Super Neighborhood Council and War on Drugs have partnered to organize the parade. The parade will travel south down North Main Street to 33rd Street beginning at 2 pm. There are already more than eighty four registered groups participating in the parade including bands, floats and entertainment. The expected participation is growing to more than two thousand individuals. The parade is scheduled to start at 2pm and is expected to run well beyond 3:30 pm.
