Safe Clear requires city sanctioned and licensed tow truck drivers to remove stalled vehicles from the interstate system within Houston city limits.
That removal of vehicles must be done under the supervision of a licensed peace officer.
In the past that was done by the Houston Police Department.
But now officials from HPD confirm they are handing the program over to the Metro Police Department as of this month.
Captain Driscoll at HPD says the move allows 14 Houston police officers to return to the streets instead of operating Safe Clear.
However, the administrative end of Safe Clear like licensing tow truck drivers will remain under HPD.
