| The Twins! |
Homicide detectives say 48-year-old twin brothers were found living inside a southeast Houston home with the decomposing body of their dead mother on the floor.
Both men have been charged with murder.
Houston police went to the twins' home on Glenscott Drive near Hinman Street on Monday night to conduct a welfare check after a neighbor reported that the mother had not been seen in a while.
The officer was allowed to enter and found the body of 89-year-old Sybile Berndt.
According to court documents, Sybile's son, Edwin Berndt, initially answered the officer's knocks said "everyone was fine and there was no need for the police at their home."
The officer insisted she had to see Berndt's mother and he let her into the house.
The home was in "deplorable condition and smelled terribly," and the elderly Berndt was lying face down on the floor of the foyer, according to the documents.
Sybil Berndt was dressed in a nightgown pulled up under her arms and was not wearing underwear.
The body was in an advanced state of decomposition and insects were crawling around it, the documents said.
Police took the victim's sons, Edward Larry and Edwin Christian Berndt, into custody early Tuesday morning.
The brothers told investigators they served as caregivers for their mother and that she suffered a fall inside the house on Jan. 10.
The brothers also admitted that they did not provide their mother with medical attention, food or water before she died Jan. 13, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Houston Police Department.
The brothers told police that they didn't have enough money to provide their mother with medical treatment or to bury her. They said they didn't call police because they didn't want to go to jail.
Police searched the home and found bank statements from JP Morgan Chase totaling about $700,000, according to court documents.
