Sources have confirmed for the Insite it's become just a bit more difficult to get overtime at the Houston Police Department's Special Operations division.
It's the section of HPD where you'll find the cops who direct traffic for parades or those officers who ride the horses downtown.
In the past, all officers had to do who wanted to earn a little extra money was show up early enough to get on the overtime list.
Things have changed since the city is facing a money crunch and there's less overtime to give out.
Now, sources say officers have to enter a lottery - that's right a lottery to get overtime.
Some cops in the special ops division are hot about this. That's why I got the call.
However, sources close to management say it's a tactic division leaders were forced to take after some cops began hiding the overtime sign up book. What does that mean?
I'm told there were officers who wanted the overtime so bad they would actually hide the old sign up sheet until there were openings. That would give the sheet thief the chance to be the first to sign up and make that extra money.
Officers say they don't like the current lottery system in place. It's a computer program designed to pick interested volunteers randomly for overtime with no favoritism at all.
What do you think of this new overtime idea?
