The fake Apple shops were highlighted last week by a blogger who writes under the name BirdAbroad. She said that there were three fake Apple shops in the city in southeastern China.
Officials have closed two of the stores because they were selling Apple products without authorization. However, Reuters reports that the shop highlighted by BirdAbroad was not closed because it is applying for a reseller’s licence.
“Some overseas media has made it appear the stores sold fake Apple products,” Chang Puyun, a spokesman for the Kunming government’s business bureau, told Reuters. “China has taken great steps to enforce intellectual property rights and the stores weren’t selling fake products.”
Another official from the city’s business bureau told Reuters that all five Apple shops were selling genuine Apple products bought from authorised retailers elsewhere in China.
Since BirdAbroad published her post about the fake Apple store last week, readers all over the world have been sending her more examples. In a blog post on Saturday she wrote: “Over the past couple of days you’ve sent pictures and written in about fake (or at least seriously questionable) Apple stores from Croatia to Colombia, Burma to Venezuela, Slovenia to Spain, and in a dozen locations right here in China.”
