GET THAT CAMERA OUT OF MY FACE AND IT'S ILLEGAL FOR YOU TO VIDEO TAPE ME!

FOX Chief Photographer Ray Williams
Photographer Torrey Walker heard it on Monday.  I was told it last Thursday.  What did we hear?  People who were clearly in the public told us as members of the news media it was illegal for us to video tape them in a public place.  That's simply not true.  If you're on a public street, in a public building, or just plain outside - then we as members of the news media can roll the camera on you.  Now, if you ask then 9 times out of 10 we won't.  But there is no law that says if you're in the public the news media can not capture your image just because you don't want us to.  We can even stand on the sidewalk or in the street (public) and shoot the outside of your house.  However, what we can't do is barge our way on your private property and video tape you after we're told to leave. We can't come on your job and roll on you if we're told to leave. Those things I describe would equate to trespassing and harassment which shouldn't be done by anyone in the news media. Share with me your thoughts on this issue.  And let's bring 2012 in with a great working relationship!

  1. Is this the legal situation in most states/cities, or just Houston, TX?

Well I think that's pretty cool. I wonder though, what's it say about people who are not in the news media? May we photograph, or video record other people in public places? Just a thought.

  5. Connerkent33,

Anyone can photograph or video anyone or anything in a public place. The news media have no more or less rights than the general public.
