IS HOUSTON A SANCTUARY CITY?

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

It's an issue that has come to the forefront several times. Is Houston a sanctuary city? The Mayor and The Police Chief have both gone on record saying that's not the case. Mayor Bill White says there are certain criteria a municipality must meet in order to become a sanctuary city. And he says Houston doesn't make the cut. But those against illegal immigration say because Houston's police department has a don't ask don't tell legal status policy Houston is a sanctuary city. So Tuesday a group of anti-illegal immigration activists took the streets of Houston getting their message out saying: Houston, We Have A Problem. With signs and flags in hand they hit the four corners of City Hall for about 2 hours. During one demonstrators stroll she received several honked horns by drivers. Not quite sure if that meant they supported her or the opposite. Do you think Houston is a sanctuary city? In simple terms sanctuary cities are municipalities that provide refuge to illegal immigrants...

We are one of the largest sanctuary cities. I agree with the protesters who say we need to kick the illegals out or turn them over to the feds.

It's General Order 500-5, issued by former Police Chief Sam Nuchia in 1992.

Mayor White and former Councilman Gordon Quan are being nit-picky by saying Houston doesn't have a sanctuary policy because Houston's mayor has never issued an executive order and city council has never voted on a resolution. Well that's a nice try, but HPD runs off a 14-year old general order, issued by a long-retired police chief.

It's still in effect. And Mayor White supports it. This is from a Chronicle story written in August of last year:

Since 1992, a Houston Police Department policy has officially forbidden officers from enforcing immigration laws in most cases.

Mayor Bill White has said he supports continuing the policy, because he believes immigration is a federal matter and he wants to free police up to protect the city from violent criminals.

She sort of looks like an attractive Jan Jeffcoat, well she would if she were shorter and wouldn't stop yapping. Oh yeah, and if she had a pound of makeup on.
