PREPARE FOR MARY J. BLIGE AND MORE THAN 30 AREA SCHOOL BANDS!The Houston Livestock Show and RodeoTM Black Heritage Committee will celebrate Black Heritage Day with a host of exhibits and events on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 9:00a-4:00p at Reliant Park.
The mission of the Black Heritage Committee is to promote the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the African-American community through awareness and involvement while emphasizing the strengths and contributions of the black cowboy to the time honored sport of rodeo.
Over 30 schools, including elementary, middle, high and charter schools, will participate in Black Heritage Day 2010. There will also be exhibits by Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M Universities as well Black Cowboy history and art projects and an exhibit and re-enactment presented by the Buffalo Soldiers Museum. These activities lead up to the evening’s rodeo performance which will feature Mary J. Blige. Black Heritage Day culminates with a performance by Keith Frank and the Soileau Band in the Hideout.
The Black Heritage Committee was established as an official Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo committee as the Black Go Texan Committee in 1993. The committee is dedicated and committed to educating youth about our rich Western culture. Through community involvement and outreach efforts, the committee has provided thousands of dollars in scholarships for the youth of Texas. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the southwest’s premier entertainment event and educational charity. Since the Show’s beginning in 1932, it has committed more than $200 million to Texas youth.
