GALVESTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALLY DESEGREGATED!

A FEDERAL JUDGE MAKES A RULING ON THE CASE!

Statement from the school district on historical ruling: Federal Judge, Sim Lake on Friday, May 1, 2009, entered a final judgment declaring the Galveston Independent School District unitary and dismissed the case that commenced on August 18, 1959.

Superintendent Lynne Cleveland received the court order from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Galveston Division that the Galveston Independent School District will be declared unitary and this action will be closed.

The court concluded that GISD has presented evidence demonstrating that it is entitled to a declaration of unitary status because it has in good faith complied with the court's desegregation orders for a reasonable period of time, and it has eliminated all vestiges of de jure discrimination to the extent practicable.

The district has unsuccessfully attempted to resolve this court order on numerous occasions throughout the years. We as a district are ecstatic to finally reach unitary status and can official declare that GISD is a desegregated district.
