The Insite has learned there are quiet talks underway to replace the head football coach at Southern University. Stump Mitchell was signed to a three year contract just one year ago replacing long time SU coach Pete Richardson.
Sources at the school tell the Insite school officials may try to come up with the money to buy Mitchell out of his contract worth $200,000 annually. Mitchell has two years left on that contract.
One source says it's going to be difficult because Southern is already facing tough financial problems with no significant funding increases from the state and less than stellar enrollment.
This attempt to shed another head football coach comes just a year after Pete Richardson was bought out of his contract at the historically Black college. The Insite has been told Richardson also has at least one more year to be paid by Southern under his employment agreement reportedly worth around $200,000.
Sources at Southern say coach Mitchell has not lived up to the expectations of the university. The former NFL player's record at S.U. is 2 and 9 this year. That makes it one of the worst football seasons in history for Southern.
Word began to spread about Mitchell's potential ouster at the annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans this weekend. It's where Grambling State University defeated Southern 38 to 17 in one of the country's biggest college football rivalries.
The game was televised nationally on NBC.
