PRESS RELEASE FROM CLEVELAND CITY COUNCIL MEMBER BARBARA MCINTYRE:
The investigation of an alleged assault of an 11 year old child is having a majorly regretful impact on the City of Cleveland. We are working very hard to connect a disengaged community yet the bias reporting is not helping. Our job and focus lies with keeping our children safe and to educate them. We are unsure about the truth and have no real way of finding the truth until all facts are uncovered. Therefore, until the investigations and court cases are complete my prayers will be with all involved and their families. I will continue to allow the police and investigators to do their jobs and work hard to unite the broken communities.
As far as Mr. Quanell X appearance to “defend” the males indicted in this case, I do not believe that defending them was his purpose. I believe he was here to help begin the healing process and to ask hard questions to the public that had not been asked. I also believe he was brought here by the community because some felt as though their voices were being disregarded by the investigators, police, and media. In response to Mr. Quanell X’s comments about the city officials that were not in attendance of his appearance, I find them to be unjustified and un-researched. If they had been researched, he would have found that had I or my constituents attended that meeting, regulations would have considered it an open quorum and it could have resulted in grounds for dismissal from city council. It is easy to run a sprint for the community but I and my constituents are running a marathon for the City of Cleveland.
The recall petition, in my opinion, is not about my capability! I have serviced the city for six years, three (3) two year terms and I was voted in by a 70% to 89% margin. During these terms I have understood everything, taken the time to get involved in the communities, and received additional training from the Municipal League. My question is: How is it that in my previous five years I was doing a great job but as soon as two additional African-Americans join the city council everything I do now is mismanagement?
My capability was only questioned when an African-American male defeated an incumbent Caucasian male in the last election. Deloise Terry defeated two Caucasian males from Jill Kirkonis and Stan Jones’ church. Durlene Davis incumbent retained her seat against an African-American male. The citizens have spoken loud and clear with their votes. Everything that I have done as a council member is within the council’s code of ethics, the City of Cleveland’s charter and Texas laws and codes.
Prior to the petition to recall and in my previous council terms I do not remember Stan Jones attending a single city council meeting. In fact it appears that this petition for a recall is not just coming from Stan Jones, former city manager Phillip Cook, and fractional number of Jones’s church members. Who is actually the mastermind, only time will tell? Jones has not tried to work with me or my constituents. I have never played the race card because I do not see race. I have supporters from all nationalities. The Cleveland Advocate, however, continues to play the “race card” against the citizens of Cleveland and its council members. May’s elections will tell the whole story.
Bring About Healing: The communities have been dividing or had a disconnection for many years before this major incident but now it is just coming to a head. Change is difficult for people and they disregard matters until they are directly affected however, reaction is not the key. From this point forward it is time for our communities to stop being reactive and to start becoming proactive. We will continue to find things we have in common like, God, keeping our children protected, putting social services in place, listen, parenting skills, and working with professional counselors to better service the youth in our community. “Human life in common is only made possible when a majority comes together which is stronger than any separate individual…” Sigmund Freud.
Thank You
