COUNCIL MEMBER WANDA ADAMS SAYS SHE WAS ATTACKED BY SOME IN THE GAY COMMUNITY!

PART OF THE CRITICISM CAME FROM THE MAN SHE GAVE A JOB!

A Houston city council member was brought to tears of hurt and anger today after being accused of hating gays.

Wanda Adams says she felt attacked by some members of the gay community.

Last month, Adams did not cast a vote to fund a controversial AIDS housing facility.

The head of the Houston Gay Lesbian Bi and Transgender Organization, Kris Banks, worked for Adams in the past.

Banks says he felt Adams should have stayed in her seat and voted for the measure.

Adams says how could she be expected to vote for the facility when she received notes and emails asking her not to.

The council member says employees claimed they weren't being paid and few, if any, AIDS patients were allowed to live at Marjo House.

Mayor Annise Parker says an investigation revealed those allegations to be false.

This is one of the criticisms Council Member Adams received and considered unfair:

WHY would Wanda Adams, who owes her election and represents Montrose, arguably the largest concentration of GLBT citizens in Houston, vote to deny funding for housing to indignant AIDS sufferers? Whatever her reason is, is her own and she is entitled to it = even if she is voting on moral grounds - but it is just a little hard to swallow that the representative of Houston's Gay community would vote to deny funding for a basic right like housing to those who are suffering from AIDS.

That's my question, maybe it's yours. You can ask Councilmember Adams by calling her office at 832-393-3001 and asking her personally. Maybe since Councilmember Adams has no GLBT staffer on board she does not understand the seriousness of the issue and maybe, just maybe, her constituents can enlighten her to what they feel is important. Councilmember Adams is a good and decent person who I have found to be open to all points of view. Why not give her a shout and let her know how you feel and how important it is to have someone acquainted with the issues of your constituencies employed on your staff.

Councilmember, on a personal note - I would hope that your vote is not because of some personal bias or act of discrimination against anyone or any group. I will remind you of the words of the great civil rights worker from Mississippi, Fannie Lou Hamer, and the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. "no one is free, until we are all free" and that means free of all forms of discrimination.
