CABS FOR CONVICTS IN HOUSTON!

The Cab Driver

If you've ever been to the downtown jail in Houston you know just how many people are there waiting on rides.

Inmates who have just been released from the custody of the county.

But if you look closer you'll see a group of men walking around with permits on their necks.

The cool Black Tahoe Cab
Those men are cab drivers and they have a special niche'.

They provide rides to detainees who have been released from the jail.

One driver says many of the inmates released don't have family members or friends outside waiting to give them a ride home.

So, the cabbies for a flat fee of $30 will take the inmates to just about anywhere in reason they want to go in the city.

That's cheaper than a ride from the airport.

I'm told by the driver, who didn't want to be identified, that there are at least a dozen taxis who offer rides to the inmates.

Where recently released inmates wait in rides at the Harris County Jail
I'm also told most who have just been released don't have the cab fare so the drivers use the honor system.

They trust them until they can make it home and get the fee from a family member or friend.

Is that a cool system or what?

By the way, the cabbie I spoke with had cool Black shiny Chevy Tahoe - that's a great way of going home in style from the Harris County Jail!

I think that's great for the "honest" ex- inmate, but as statistics reflect. What about the percentage of ex-inmates that are less honest or even ruthless. To me it seems that the risk factor for the cabbies that take home the ex-inmates that may be dishonest or ruthless is very high. They could get stiffed on pay or worse they could end up a "stiff".
